unfortunately i did not get any photos of anything during that weekend. long story, but i was moving from rome and the whole house had been packed up, including cameras, and i was just there w/ a sleeping bag. i also did not yet own a ferrari at that stage and although always interested in the cars, was only really 'bitten' by the bug that weekend. i was there with friends who own a number of interesting cars and happen to be friends of the rome dealer and so we had great viewing opportunities, but no pics sorry. fwiw, it was a complete car sensory overload - ferrari stuff everywhere, ferraris of all kinds everywhere; it was simply amazing. the only other time i have gotten that kind of feeling was at goodwood. |

Ross, that particular car happens to be one of my personal favorites so it immediately came to mind. I missed seeing 0456 AM when it was at Pebble Beach and have never seen it in person as Wayne Golomb, the car's owner, is not showing the car anymore and also won't let it be "exposed" in magazines. Did you happen to get any photos of the car while you were there? |

I didn't get a chance to talk to the guy who drove it to the party...he was just driving it, so i doubt he knew anything about its history. the girl seemed pretty lackadaisical when he hit the curb. the car was in poor shape, even before a chunk of the bumper came off. for what it's worth, i've seen a red Testarossa convertible (it said spyder on the back) on 3rd avenue in manhattan. |

JRV Holy cow, I remember seeing that car one day at your shop. The top did not seal all the way against the side windows. It was raining that day and I recall thinking "wow, $50K for a leaky top...jeeezz!!". Was that a Stratman convertable or did someone else do it? I seem to recall an old woman was driving it too. What ever happened to it!!! |

SL55 or an out dated non factory hacked top TR? Not even a question. Good luck in trying to sell one of those things if you buy it.Not to mention the leaks it must have. I would stay clear. |

The yellow targa that you saw, Justin, bears an uncanny resemblance to the one I saw a few months ago. This was at an engagement party in Great Neck, Long Island... the daughter of the owner of an area Porsche dealership showed up in it with her boyfriend.. needless to say, a decent chunk of the car was taken off by the curb.. It had dealership plates; I was wondering if the wheels came like that (yellow-filled) as OEM equipment, or if it was an option/aftermarket?..

Ross, the gold car that you saw was most likely the 1954 Paris Show car s/n 0456 AM. It is a 1954 375MM Berlinetta Speciale and was purchased immediately following the show by director Roberto Rossellini, supposedly for wife Ingrid Bergman, but most likely for his own use. I'll see if I can find an image on the Web and provide a link. Here you go: http://www.barchetta.cc/english/All.Ferraris/Detail/0456AM.375MM.htm

edvar, i believe the car i saw in rome was silver, but it was a while back and i didn't have a digital camera then..... if you were there as well, maybe you can help me with another query; do you remember that gold colored car, probably from the fifties, that i and my friends had never seen before... i ralize this is a bit vague but maybe it stirs a memory on your side. |

Ross, I thought the car in Rome was an ex-Brunei car. It was black and I thought it was a 512 TR Spider, not a Testarossa Spider. But I have to check my files to be sure .... |

wayne, i think the agnelli car still exists, and i think i saw it in rome in 97 during the 50 year anniversary festivities. and while standing there talking to an owner of many fcars, he said he thought that they had built 2, one for agnelli and one for our perenial rare car collector the sultan of brunei. fwiw. |

Will, The SL55 is faster, newer and constructed better- if its your daily drive, I'd say get it- but a 512tr Spyder would definetly top off your collection . If you need the car to be driven everyday and don't care if you see your car everywhere in the SL500 Sport form, then go for the AMG, if not, be different! AMG is an automatic! |

Well William, that is an easy choice as the SL55 is newer, worth more, has modern tech advancement, a easy daily driven car, powerful, reliable, etc. not that I wouldn't take the TR spyder but between the 2 the MB makes more sense to me. |

Thanks Justin. I was hoping the car was here in the U.S. The Targa looks too funky and don't look right and as far a rigidity as long as the conversion is done correctly I don't think the car would split in half on a turn and by the way the car wouldn't be used for racing anyway. A car for racing would be one that is expendable so when you wreck it you go buy another one and I'm not in that budget range to do so with a Ferrari over 100K. I use another car for that. Again that is why there are classifications of types of driving styles, there are ones you buy for aggressive driving and ones you cruise to enjoy in and of course gotta look good to, etc. etc. |

I personally like the targa over the converible.....it would seem that it would be stiffer, with less modificaion, if any, needed to the frame. |

Hey Justin, where did you get that pic of the Yel Testarossa Conv. Anyone knows who selling it and where I can get the info on this exact car? This is the cleanest conversion I have ever seen on a Testarossa. That car meets Modmans style. The silver one which supposedly be the original version looks ugly in the back engine cover. |

Grant, I'm don't know when the Straman car was done but it likely came before the Agnelli car. BTW, regarding the Agnelli car: s/n 62897 Purchased by Gianni Agnelli on June 13, 1986. Registered on Italian plates "TO 02587 F." Seriously wrecked by G. Agnelli's son soon after. I don't know if it survives to this day or not.

Here's two more that I know of: White/Blue & Red/White I drove both cars after servicing and didn't notice any unusual body/frame flex..didn't drive them long or hard though. The windows were a PITB I recall.

That black car was at Cavallino, thats where the pics where taken. Wonder how much they want for it. Gonna need a good price to seduce me away from an MB 55SL As for the reduced torsional stiffness, thats a big worry on the early TRs, the 512TR & 512M had a 1 piece frame so they have much stiffer frames |

The black 512M conversion mentioned earlier is for sale at BJ auctons. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/events/florida/vehicles/cardetail_list.asp?id=173507 Look on the engine pic. Twin turbo??? That's just what you need to put on a car with reduced torsional stiffness! Sorry- looks like a waste of what WAS a fine & rare car. IMO

The yellow one was nicely done asthetically. You can make a convertible conversion quite rigid, but you have to add a tubular X-frame under the car and throughout. It is not trivial. Best! Ben |

I saw that 512M at Cavallino, its black with gold wheels, looks sort of bling bling The 512TR & the 512M make better spyders cus they have much stiffer frames than the older TR which has a 2 piece frame

There is even a Black 512M chop top out there somewhere.. They even removed the side strike louvers.. It did look good.. As far as a I know. The TR chassis was never intended for conv't use.. It would need to go under heavy modification.

i dont know if it came before or after the Agnelli "authentic" one ... but one of the first was constructed by Straman. A black one done special for - get this - a Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial... Road & Track reviewed it in one of their old "Ferrari Special Editions" they used to do... looked pretty nice in all black, ext, int and top. I'll try and dig for the issue and post some pics... hmmmm... MJ had a Ferrari reconstructed and i guess got some ideas for himself... Ferrari turned out better if you ask me.... Grant |

its a great looking car, not too much $ these days, definately not a track car. If I ever found a 512TR chopped I might have to get it Straman charged $50k for the TR chop, $75k for a 550 chop, probably better than the 550 barchetta |

The silver car is the real deal, a one-off built for Gianni Agnelli. The rest are all chop-jobs. Oh yeah, Agnelli's car was called the "Testarossa Spider" with an "i." |

just to clarify: they are all aftermarket conversions. Some done by Stramann in Cali. Yellow is great as it keeps the original lines. The silver mucked up the rear deck lid with all those louvers. Ferrari mechanic in dallas had one on the lift when I was in there and he said it had TONS of body flex with the roof missing. Of course you probably aren't tracking a car like this. They do look cool. Think Stramann made a black one for Michael Jackson from Pepsi. |
