Jim, I second Liar's Poker(read it a few years ago, might have to re-read). Also, The New New Thing was interesting. Currently I am about to finish Monkey Business. After that I'll have to check out some of the others you listed. As for Keynes, you just gotta love his quote, "In the long run we're all dead." |

Hi Tony, I don't think you have to make any dream. Just spend less on other hobbies and definitely you could buy a Ferrari. One of our Sunday drive colleague just bought a 308 qv for only US$19.5K in great condition. Take your time.

Hey JimE, was that 308GT4 the same one that was owned by some university and used as a test vehicle of some sort? At $6000, did you buy it? Where is it located? (I don't mind considering lower grade cars that others would turn down.)

"I am thinking all I need to do is picture myself in a Ferrari. Buy the posters for my walls, the toy model, some books on the care and feeding of a Ferrari, and I could be on my way toward fulfilling the dream of a lifetime." While all of that is well and dandy, maybe you should get the maintnance books when you cross that bridge. In the mean time, I recommend picking up a few investment or money managing books. I highly suggest "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." This book opening my eyes to the power of money, and I've been building like a snowball ever since. I, too, wish to own a (read: many) Ferrari(s) one day. I know for a fact it will happen. No doubt in my mind now that I've begun my trip through the real learning process. Jason- |

If you know how to do the work, I don't think ownership is that expensive. Last weekend I came across a 308GT4 that needs a head gasket, but is otherwise strong mechanically for $6000. It's body and interior are rough, but they wouldn't keep it from being driven. The mechanic said the head gasket was about a $1500 fix. |

Good idea to take an auto repair class to do your own maintenance & save big $. You can also cross reference FIAT parts & save some $ there |

Arlie is right on target. I learned to be less 'car poor' by realizing I can screw up my car for a lot less money than my mechanic can. |

Wait!...Ron!...I was going on the assumption that all things were possible THROUGH debt. I must have it all screwed up. I better go earn some money now to pay that resurrection bill on my 308. |

It's called being "car poor". A syndrome that is a relative term applicable to any car buff regardless of income. Add the cost of the car to the cost of maintenance to the cost of insurance to the cost of storage, etc. Also refered to as a pipe dream. Also used in reference to a restorable car. "Restoration time" is where "tomorrow" becomes next year, and "someday" becomes never. As in, "I'm going to work on it tomorrow" or "I won't sell it because I'm going to restore it someday". Don't ask how I know.

the total five year cost of ownership of a given ferrari is not all that hard to figure out, absent unforeseeable failures or events. just ask - i'm sure some owners will be happy to share info. obviously the five year costs for a 308 today are different than a new enzo. doody. |

...but it helps, right? I joined this chat because I was doing research for a client about the total cost to own a Ferrari -- the kind of five year profile a suburbanite might do before deciding on the best SUV for his/her needs and budget. While never finding this info I still benefited from my visit here because I had hoped from the young age of 12 that someday I might own an exotic sports car, maybe a Ferrari. At the same same, all my life, I was of the belief you also had to be filthy rich to own one. My visit here has shown me that I shouldn't give up hope yet. While it helps to be filthy rich I am now of the opinion that some who post here do not earn a lot more than I could earn if I really put my mind to it. I am thinking all I need to do is picture myself in a Ferrari. Buy the posters for my walls, the toy model, some books on the care and feeding of a Ferrari, and I could be on my way toward fulfilling the dream of a lifetime. So, while I didn't get what I came here for, I left with something else -- I left with the realization that you shouldn't give up on your earliest dreams because you just never know what might happen someday if you don't stop trying. |
