Jimpo, thx again for the lift this weekend! Kind of strange in the garage with no F-car (out for the 30K service). BTW, the MINI is a 100% complete BLAST to drive... may be the most fun car I own (even when the 328 is home)! It's just a big go-cart with a supercharged engine. Too fun...

Hey, I could tell you enjoyed the drive to BFE on Saturday... and it was great exercise for your 328!!!

We have a radio station here in MN that you are supposed to count the current cylinders that you have and they must be gas-combustible after adding that up you must reach atleast your age or more. They call it the CI index.

I haven't taken the time to do a historical but a quick current looks like:

75 Cylinders [40 in 5 autos, 24 in 2 airplanes, 3 in lawn equipment, and 8 in a small block GM 350-300 on the garage floor (the original engine to my 1969 Corvette)].

3215 Horsepower [1495 in autos, 1420 in airplanes (670 from Cessna 340 and 750 from Cessna 421), 300 on the floor, and no idea about the lawn equip].

Fun - but I think using the airplanes is cheating since they are in the hangar and not in the garage.

Herbert:

Unless you had something done to the 750ss its more like 60-65 HP than 80 HP. I have two 900ss's, one bone stock and dynose at 74 HP, the other has a Fast By Ferrachi engine (944 kit, lightened, ballanced, knife edged crank, titanium con rods, 11.5 pistons, spagheti exhaust, carb work, S2 cams,...) It only dynos at 87 HP.

Lifetime total owned powered habitable Vehicle cylinder count: 67

20 Italian
14 German
14 Japanese

Most cylinders in one vehicle: 9
Least displacement: 903cc (Fiat)
Most displacement: 1340cid(P&W)

Bottom line: I do wish I could trade 3 fours for one twelve, and the fact that most of my cylinders are Italian is scary even to me.

Currently, 34.
But I'd think sum of horsepower would be far more indicative than number of cylinders... think about it... 4 Chevettes don't outrank a Ferrari! Nor do 15 weedwackers and leaf blowers! I could see liters of displacement... but would still go with horses.

Currently, I have 1378 horses in my stable... that sounds sooo much more impressive than 34 cylinders.

Of course, those in the other thread with 4 or 5 Ferraris will beat both those numbers handily.

My most unusual application was an old Snapper riding mower at 3.5 horse, and little plastic wheels, I had it up to around 35 plus mph! You know how kids have time to waste? I switched some pulleys around, mounted a fan (attempt at a blower) driven off the axle to pressurize the intake, a friend actually made a bigger cam for it, man it was a hoot. Even passed a car buzzing down to the local party store for more beer. Boy, the look on that guy's face......

Hmm, Cylinders...

Thought I'd try counting both ways
I've probably forgotton a couple,
but here's what I can recall:

CYLINDER COUNTS

131 Lifetime total
93 Lifetime Vehicle total

67 Current total
46 Current Vehicle total

A Wankel rotor = 3 cyl.

Not included are my wife's Camry,
& my son's 2 Rx7s that are in my name.

What did R&T say were 'typical' numbers?

BTW, what was your most UNUSUAL CYLINDER APPLICATION:
I'd have to say the 1-cyl. Maytag Washing Machine motor I had to tinker with as a kid stands out as really odd-ball.

Probably next most unusual is the MAZDA 3-Rotor 20B (9-cyl. equiv) I've got awaiting the right project car.

very amusing!

currently: 34

in toto historically: 66 plus 1 wankel rotary (how does that work in the math? not fair to skip it!).

somehow i've managed to never own a snowblower or lawn mower, though i do own an industrial strength weed whacker (not included in the math).

Ive read it. Basically.... you can measure your level of gear head success by the number of cylinders you own. I believe the formula was based on currently owned cylinders. Right now Im at 36. I just wish 12 of those were in a single engine!

I was reading in an old issue of Road and Track about how people in the authers home town (a farming community) would talk of the number of gas engined cylinders they have had over the years. Including the lawn mowers and weed wackers. My cylinder count to date is...46. I know kind of low but I'm working on it!!
