Jonathan, et. al.,

The 355 is single disc, the dual disc on 348 was changed sometime around 1991 to single disc.

355 Challenge uses a four-puck sintered metallic disc sans marcel to increase clamping force by increasing pressure per area. Its touchy but street drivable. My recommendation is call Norwood ((972) 831-8111), they have Ceterfoces available for many applications. That would be the best compromise for street/track. Though, IME, the OEM 355 clutch is a very durable component if you want to stay stock.

BTW, all out racing clutches as mentioned previously are not street drivable. If you have a dedicated track car thats a different story. I did a triple disc carbon-carbon Tilton for an F40 customer, awesome! This is a track-only car though. The reduction in drivetrain inertia was like adding 50HP, the engine accelerated like a fiend. The weight savings was about 22 pounds, and the moment of inertia drop was huge. :-)

Think about resurfacing the clutch with carbon or kevlar or whatever they recommend.

The car will drive hard when you have a differeent clutch on everyday driving.

Challenge clutches are 2-plate, right?

I'd recomend a AP/Tilton/Quartermaster style multiplate organic or carbon clutch for SERIOUS competition. Indy-car style. AP has some nice carbon units (they make F1 car clutches.)

Clutch life has a lot to do with driving styles ... maybe a previous owner used to slip it a lot?

Another thing that can be hard on a clutch is if you are over working the engine for engine braking. I used to classic race an Alfa Sud and the poor little clutch used to be get a very hard time ... but due to poor braking performance I used to use the engine really hard to help slow down. This just gave the engine a hard time and did not help the clutch ... in the end new, bigger and better brakes were required.

I learnt that brakes are for slowing, and the only reason you change down is to be in the right gear for the corner ... in the old days with drum brakes, etc. the engine was used a lot for slowing down ... not required now with the braking power available (far better than any engine braking).

Just my two cents worth ... racing or tracking a car does not have to be an abuse session :-), that some think it is (not saying that you think it is BTW) ... it is about getting the performance out of the car by maximising ones own performance.

The one in my 308 showed signs of wear at 85,000 miles...
Most guys racing 512BBLM's use Tildon.

Thats funny, I have over 24 days at the track when the dual mass flywheel let go last month. The clutch disk still had over 1/2 of its service life left.

Can anybody recomend a good heavy duty or racing clutch for the 355, after 2 hard track days my clutch is slipping and I would like to replace it with something that will stand up at the track.
