Hi Nika, I have but one recommendation: THE RACING DRIVER by Denis Jenkinson This is quite simply the finest text I have ever read on the subject of racing and driving quickly. It was first released in 1959 and it is amazing how closely everything that is written relates to the modern day. I am very fortunate to have had Stirling Moss dedicate my personal copy 'From one racing driver to another' in Monte Carlo a few years back. All I can say is GET THE BOOK! You will surely not regret it.

A bit off topic, but what the heck: Don't forget "Michel Vaillant" the comic strip. Dopey stories, but phantastic drawings and always in the technology and trend of the current F1 year. Including cameo appearances of real drivers, it is really fun to read or better look at. Hummelcomic Germany still sells them, but they're now collectors items. That's how I got the race/F1 bug as a 7 year old.

This is one for you. It covers every car he raced, including sports cars, Indy cars, TransAm, F1, CanAm. Lola,Cobra,Cooper, Alpine, McLaren, Ferrari, Ford GT, Pensky,Jag, etc. The best part of course is him describing driving my MK-IV at LeMans in 67. He also describes developing and racing the mighty 917-30 Porsche. |

I heard the 'unfair advantage' is more about race preparation, technique etc than a bio. Yes, Steve Matchett (sp?) is the author of 'Life in the fast lane' and he shows how Berger picked up nit picking things from Senna, who used them to keep his McLaren boys on thier toes and then delivered the pole, whereas Berger tries the same thing in the ex WC Schuey car and only ends up annoying his meccanos since he barely delivered anything. Just one example. The book is out of print btw. I got lucky last year at the 'flea market' outside the US GP in Indy where an antique book seller had it for $ 30. Talk about a trophy find. |

yes - Steve Marchett(sp?) I believe is the ex-mechanic now commentator. I read his "Mechanics Tale" which described how he got into Formula One to begin with. He is a talented writer - I really enjoyed the humour in his book. I do recommend it. Thank you Andreas |

Not sure who wrote Berger's bio, but I believe it was at least published by the same company that brought out Schumi's and Senna's. Both excellent reads. Tell you a lot about what's inside their heads as well as the bare facts and how they got there (since you're a racer, you're gonna love that part). Another 'semi bio' was written about Damon Hill and the year he won the WC. Also an excellent read. I'm not a Hill fan by a mile, but that book makes you rethink it all. Forgot the title, but if you like I could look it up tonigth. Last but not least the ultimate inside story: Live in the fast Lane. Written by Schue's ex mechanic (now a commentator on Speed F1 races) and tells you all the inside stuff. Haven't read it yet (my pile of to read books is always growing, not shrinking, oh well), but it is supposedly the best there is and puts Berger in perspective as a winer and complainer... Let me know if you need more details (like ISBN #) etc. |
