ROFLMAO, Brian.

That's hilarious. Good for you!

Reminds me of that line in Strange Brew: "Brakes are gone - no sense steering!".

Enjoy!

I have a 1976 308 GT4 that I am using as an experiment in abuse:

1.) Mileage is at 89,000 miles.
2.) I have not replaced points, cap, plugs etc in about 45,000 miles.(Actually I have replaced nothing)
3.) I track day the car very often-but do nothing special to it.
4.) I change oil as required-Castrol GTX.
5.) I let the car sit for 2.5 years in a garage without preparing it for storage. I came back from England and started it up one day. Just put a new battery in it and fired it up and let it idle for 10 minutes to make sure it wasn't going to explode or puke it's guts out. I drove it around the neighborhood to make sure the brakes/clutch worked, etc. I then drove it for 700 miles that weekend. No problems other than a noisy bearing on an air pump-which I have ignored. The noise has gone away.
5.) I have owned the car now for over 10 years and the only thing that has ever broken was a hot water line going to the heater box about 8 years ago. I drove the car for 2 miles with the water gauge pegged to get home. I replaced the water line but didn't worry about anything else. Engine was not hurt!!
6.) I washed the car one day and got the forward bank of plugs soaked in water and hence they "shorted out" I drove the car after washing it, not knowing of this, and wound up dumping 4 cylinders worth of fuel into the exhaust, which wound up becoming red hot and acting like an afterburner! I only knew about it because some guy stopped me on the road when he saw flames coming out the exhaust.
Total damage: I burnt the paint off of the exhaust!

All of this is 100% true. The car is old, worn and clapped out and needs a new paint job and probably an engine rebuild, but---the bloody thing will not die!!

My friends all ask me when I plan to get rid of the car or fix it--I say never--why jinx a good thing?

I test drove an 83 308 last year that had 75k on it. Car was still relatively tight. There is something positive to be said for cars that have been used. I just believe the mileage should be reflected in price for cars that are up for sale.

Tillman,

Very tasteful 328 you have. I guess your question is the same as mine. Is there a general point in mileage beyond the expected rebuild where "regular" Ferrari maintanence becomes a case of throwing good money after bad? @ 57K Keep going.

David,

I'm not concerned about resale, as I don't intend to sell the car. That's why I picked the one I did -- it was in great mechanical shape and very nice cosmetic shape, had enough miles on it to show it had been used, but wasn't a show car. I would feel guilty running the wheels off a 700 mile 328, but this one is perfect for me to use as a daily driver.

I'm planning on running it until it needs a rebuild, rebuild it, and keep going. I may get another Ferrari (I did the 550 a lot!) but I wanted a 308/328 since I was 10 years old and so this is a keeper.

Just my perspective.

David, the same thing goes for the really low milage Ferraris. I would never, ever touch a 308 with 5600 miles. Not unless it was priced accordingly -(needs new everything)

My question is, who would knowingly buy a Ferrari with 6 figure mileage? That kind of useage must bring as many maintanence issues as an >1000 mile 10+ year old car. It just seems downright scary. Racking up high mileage must be fun, but what becomes of these cars when they reach the resale market?

That 275GTB has been loved to death ... every one of those 400,000 kms would have been soooo much fun.

I want a car that I want to drive as much as that.

The Ferrari speedo spec. states that they should only be manufactured to last for 3 years or 30K miles. After that they stop calibrating properly!

I think Ferraris will last a lot longer than many think, in particular the newer cars. They have ridiculously intense service schedules and as long as the car is worth something people will be motivated to keep it running. Also, despite being somewhat of a pain to work on compared to normal cars, Ferrari uses A1 materials for everything. Even the most random parts are top of the shelf stuff.

The one time I will actually believe the listed miles on a Ferrari for sale is if it says 100,000+ miles. No one would fib about that.

Great to hear of 100k Ferraris. Thats exactly what I plan to take mine to :-) Some may shun it, but if I get a fun car, Im going to have fun with it --while keeping it properly maintained and in great condition -- but Im going to drive!

A fellow NW region FCA friend of mine has over 103K miles on his 1987 328GTS. The engine's never had any major work done other than the usual- belts, clutch, etc. The heads have never been off. The car runs great!!

The Honda reaches 100k in 6 years, the Ferrari took 16 years. The Honda is a piece of crap low horse power no balls gerbal powered tin box. The Ferrari is a cutting edge race bred performance machine. How many engines does a NASCAR team go through in a weekend? They're only pushing 700 HP, not too much more than stock versions. More aggresive with the engine, then more likely to need an engine rebuild sooner.

a rebuild at 100k? thats the milage at which my honda needed its 1st scheduled maintenance (well, 90k, but close. Belt changes, water pumps and other things one would expect from a ferrari, but is it that hard to build an engine that can last for 100k miles?

My 328 crossed 57,000 miles today, and I believe a local 308 has 90,000+ (and doesn't look like it!). While 57K isn't all that high, I was wondering how the rest of the fcars are doing?

Any thoughts?
