The reason for the low milage is that Ferrari puts gears in the tranny and diff that let the car rev out at top end in 6th. So at 60 MPH its operating at 1/3 red-line. Vetts and Vipers achieve top end in 5th gear, sacrificing 6th gear for millage rather than access to top end. So while a Vette or a Viper is operating at 1,600 RPMs F360's and F355's are operating closer to 2,800 RPMs. In addition, the valve (4 CAMS, 40 Valves) train extracts more energy from the engine than the two valve single CAM Vipers. Finally, the dry sump and extensive cooling of the oil take energy from the engine, and lower the miles per gallon. Aparently Ferrari designed these cars to operate at top power levels for extended periods of time (24 HRs) without overheating and/or barfing tis guts out the side of the cases. |

Good point Martin. For everyday cars it would be cool to have good mileage, but for Fcars it doesn't really matter. |

If you can afford the car you can afford the gas. If you think about it, the couple thousand modenas (that arent drvien that much anyway compared to other cars) dont really have a big effect. Its all those SUV's that tiny women drive around in. |

The day before yesterday I got approx 5 MPG in my 360... burned half a tank in 50 track miles. Fortunately, it does MUCH better on the street.

Data point on 360. Just did 2 track days at Sebring with my new 360 Spider. 16 gals for 120-130 track miles per day. It was great! |

Nika: I know what you mean. I added a Penske triple adjustable suspension system and the problem went away. Also, you have to to be very careful with your corner entry speed in the Viper. The adage slow in, fast out really applies here, especially if you'e on street tires and lift to abruptly. The Viper is very touchy, but as you gain confidence the on/off button brings lots of smiles. One also should upgrade the brakes. Too many Viper folks spend their money on engine upgrades instead of suspension/brakes. |

Tony - I've spent more time on a track in a Viper then a Ferrari - I love the car but the one time I had to lift in a corner and the back end twitched I almost had to change my pants! While the same thing can happen in a Ferrari I feel like I at least have some sort of control. |

Don't underestimate the truck engine in the Viper, since it won LeMans, Daytona and Sebring, etc., etc., etc. It's a great car! As far as slowing down in the corners, maybe a little but not as much as you may think. There's something magic about low-end torque, just as there is with high-end torque.Gas mileage with the Viper, like the Ferrari, depends on the weight of your right foot and gear ratios. One unbiased measurement may be the Gas Guzzler Tax in the U.S.: $3,000 for the Viper and $4,500 for the 360. In any event, both cars are a blast! Sorry, but I didn't want anyone to think the Viper enthusiast closet was locked. |

I saw that they're trying to pass bill here in the US that would make all SUVs and trucks have to make 35mpg by 2013. |

No - only the 360 and the Viper. The American Torque machine aka the "Viper" is not as refined as the Ferrari - but I wouldn't kick it out of my driveway for being dirty :o) In the article they mention lawnmowers, snowblowers (That's something that gets rid of snow Martin) and personal watercraft are all going to have to meet new emission standards. |

My 360's fuel mileage is pretty bad when I take it out on the twisties (up and down the rev range with plenty of braking and shifting). In traffic and city driving, it's worse. On the freeways, it's not bad at all as long as I don't stomp on the gas too much and stay at a relatively constant speed. I would think the 550 Maranello would make the top of that list. Is it on the list, Nika? |

Nika, They most likely did the milage test on a road with lot's of twist and turns, therefore the viper had to slown down (alot) to get around the corners whereas the Ferrari ran flat out, thus the Ferrari got the worst mileage. :-) Now I will hear from all the closet viper fans who love the Idea of a truck engine in a car, come to the think of it Nika isn't the Viper a truck? then only one car on the list? |

The Toronto STar had an article about the new emission rules for SUV in 2004. In it they listed the 360 Modena F1 as the worse fuel efficient car at 22.4 L/100km - before the Chevy Silverado Truck, Dodge Ram & Viper at 20.9 I'm curious to why? The 8 of the Modena compared to the 10cyl of the Viper???? hmmmmmmmmmm? Those are the only two cars on a list of top 15! |
