"That's not a Barchetta. Whatever it is, it's uglier than a bulldog's ass...."

You got that right. Looks like a woman's electric razor: leg hair on the grill, underarms on the tail. All it needs is a big electric cord. UGLEEEE!!! Ugly Ugly Ugly.

From the latest edition on Veloce Today:
(By Pete Vack)

And now may we present another ridiculous idea in Retro-marketing. Coachbuilders now are creating one-off specials dedicated to famous but long dead Ferraris owners, in this case Italian film director Roberto Rossellini. According to the Carrozzeria Castagna, they have built, on a Ferrari chassis, a "custom built car (to be premiered at) the "Concorso di Villa dEste" that will be held in Cernobbio, April 25th-28th, 2003." They go on to state that "It is dedicated to the great Italian director Roberto Rossellini, a real Ferrari enthusiast. In fact, he ordered a lot of coachbuilt Ferraris. Among them everyone remember the famous 375 Mille Miglia, often with Ingrid Bergmann (sic)at the wheel." (www.carrozzeriacastagna.com)

While the great director did indeed purchase many Ferraris, (none bodied by Castagna, whose coachwork never graced any Ferrari chassis) the famed "Ingrid Bergman" 375MM (serial number 0456), referred to above, was not ordered by her, for her, and most certainly not ever driven by Ingrid Bergman. The actress didnt much care for cars, or Ferraris, in the first place, and by the time of the 1954 Paris Auto Show, where Rossellini spotted and bought 0402, she not only didnt like cars but disliked Rossellini--they were already separated. But the myth continues. For the record, here are the Ferraris associated with Rossellini:

011S 166 Stablimenti Farina Cabriolet
0076E Vignale bodied 212, ex-006I spider corsa (it is not known if Rossellin actually purchased this car or simply borrowed it)
0235 212 Inter Pininfarina Cabriolet (again, it has not been proven Rossellini ever actually owned this car)
0265 212 Pininfarina Coupe The only Ferrari with any definite connection to Bergman, who wanted a car with a large trunk.
0230 250MM Vignale Spyder Rossellini actively campaigned this car.
0299 250 GT Pininfarina Coupe Bergman and Rossellini were often photographed with this car.
0402 375MM Rebodied by Scaglietti for Rossellini after a racing accident.
0456 375MM Paris Show car, the "Ingrid Bergman Ferrari".
For more details, see Forza issues 21 and 22, The Passion of Roberto Rossellini.

Jason, no need to apologize.

As for the Barchetta.cc site, those fellows have really bitten off more than they can chew. They are trying to tackle too much at once and have sacrificed accuracy for quantity. They're also slow to make corrections and updates to the information they have. Still, it's a good concept and run by some good people. Needs a lot of work though.

I did get my story screwed up and I apologize. Anyway I found the website that I was looking at the other day and the info on 375MM 0456AM says the following;
55 - Rossellini, I; (Ingrid Bergman never took delivery)
This is where I found it and maybe I am missing something.

Stu:

Rossellini owned seven different Ferraris, two of them were 375MMs, 0402AM (now with Jon Shirley) and the "Ingrid Bergman" car 0456AM (now with Wayne Golomb). They are two very different cars. While 0456AM began life as a one-off show car designed by Pinin Farina, 0402AM was originally a Pinin Farina built spyder but was rebodied (after an unfortunate encounter with a date palm) into a berlinetta by Scaglietti.

It is 0456AM that is referred to as the "Ingrid Bergman" car because it was supposedly purchased as an anniversary present for her.

There are even some sources state it was a "wedding present," though they had been married for years before the purchase of this car. One source has simply stated that it was intended for Ms. Bergman but that she "never took delivery." Since several subsequent authors have been too lazy to research this any further, it has been common for this "never took delivery" statement to show up in brief descriptions of the car.

Pete Vack did extensive research on this, including interviewing Rossellini's son Renzo and neice Fiorella Mariani, for his two-part Forza article on Rossellini's cars. It seems that Ingrid wasn't too happy with her husband by this time and cared little for the Ferraris (though she DID have one before). There are, however, many photos and accounts of Rossellini himself driving the car. Most likely the whole "anniversary present" part of the story is myth.

Jens, I think everyone here knows who Ingrid Bergman was. I believe Jeff was just kidding. Anyway, I agree that she was beautiful, but I personally think that Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly were more so. JMHO.

Hey Wayne - or anyone - was the 375 MM "Rossellini" car a one-only build?

Reason I ask is that in this months PH (#146) on page 32/33 they have a picture of the "Rossellini" car as part of an article on the new GP watch dedicated to said car. However, this picture is not like the car I saw in Shirely's collection - and I thought HIS was the famous 375MM Rossellini car?

Curious...Two different cars? More than one style 375MM?

Guys, guys, guys,

You really know very well about Ferraris but hey you dont know Ingrid Bergman? She was one of the most beautiful women ever alive and a really famous actress (Forget Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez and all these other plastic beauties...)

Con saluti cordialissimi,
Jens Haller

P.S. Remember "Casablanca" with Humphrey Bogart? Remember the women? Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!

Wayne, my search didn't really turn anything up that i think would be of any interest to you, but i did find this (which isn't relative to your original question, but what the hey)- not sure if you already have this site or it doesn't mean anything to you, but i figured i'd post it, just in case... i know, occasionally, you have a serial # question...
Also, i should have that book soon- do you still need it...?

She was Isabella Rossellini's mother. I think she was an actress or something (snicker).

Jason, her husband, Roberto Rossellini, took delivery of the car in 1954 and drove it for a couple of years while they were married. They divorced soon after but she didn't die until 1982!

One article I just read on the Rossellini 375MM is that Ingrid Bergman died before she ever took delivery. I don't know who she is and as far as I know she may still be alive but that is what I read.

Not very revealing, huh?

"...often with Ingrid Bergmann at the wheel?"

What? No one, not even immediate family members, can ever recall seeing Ingrid Bergman drive this car. The whole "anniversary gift" story is most likely a romantic myth. The car was Rossellini's for Rossellini.

I found this on the press-area in Castagna's website.... maybe this is why there is so little out there on it...

Rossellini - English Version
This custom built car will be disclosed as premire during the Concorso di Villa dEste that will be held in Cernobbio (Como-Italy) , April 25th-28th, 2003.
It is dedicated to the great Italian director Roberto Rossellini, a real Ferrari enthusiast. Infact ,he ordered a lot of coachbuilt Ferraris. Among them everyone remember the famous 375 Mille Miglia, often with Ingrid Bergmann at the wheel.
The coachwork wants to cover a sporting Ferrari chassis, raced during last GT championship. The form is a barchetta, elegant but, in the meanwhile, able to give prominence to the 720 CV twelve cylinders engine.

At the Geneva Auto Show a coach builder called Carrozzeria Castagna is exhibiting a concept based on the 575M called the "Rossellini Barchetta." Supposedly the car has a gray/burgundy exterior and red interior. Does anybody have a picture of this car or know of any images of it anywhere on the Web?
