Da Matta was doing very well until the last stint. Putting one wheel on the grass really cost him. Anyway, for his impressive run yesterday I think he's going to be a force to be dealt with. I think he'll be the next Montoya! |

If Michael wanted to go later in the session he needed to go faster on Friday. This is the Order they will hit the track for qualifying: Wilson Pizzonia Verstappen Firman R Schumacher _______________ Webber Fisichella Frentzen Heidfeld da Matta _______________ Montoya Trulli Panis Alonso Coulthard _______________ Button M Schumacher Villeneuve Raikkonen Barrichello There is no reason why anyone would 'sandbag' on Friday. If you go slow on Friday you have to clean the track for the fast guys on Saturday. Michael and Rubens (and everyone else) were doing the fastest times they could with low fuel and fresh tyres. Tomorrow they will be qualifying with more fuel in the cars as they cannot re-fuel between qualifying and the race on Sunday. Come on Rubens!! |

i also think ms was sandbagging. this way he gets to run later tomorrow and have the track cleared and dried (they are calling for rain) before he gets on. on the other hand, cannot discount the yahoos running very low fuel loads to grab some early season headlines.....tomorrow will need some good commentating to keep it all straight; luckily we have martin brundle and james allen. |

I loved the new format. Finally you get to see all the cars and drivers. I love Ferrari, mind you, but this I thought was so much more interesting to see them all and compare them. Loved it, totally. I guess people have different tastes... Da Matta was probably my biggest surprise. We're gonna see a lot more from this guy. A CART champ either has it (Villeneuve) or not (Andretti) in F1. He seems to be of the Villeneuve group, who also did a fine job for once. BTW: I think MS was simply sandbagging. He'll be back on pole tonight. |

Once again I stand by my fellow canadian Jacques Villeneuve and his outstanding qualifying lap! he still has it! But then again, BAR has had reliability problems in pre-season so we'll really see how they do on sunday (saturday night here on the west coast) |

well - they are all running light on fuel this session......tomorrow should be interesting when they must start the race with the fuel left over from qualifying. Will some smaller teams start light to get some good coverage for sponsors by starting in the first few rows...but then pit early? or will they qualify deeper in the pack on a heavy fuel load to outlast the competition. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm |

Your right Rob they do tend to hog the camera when their on track. Da Matta did have a hell of a lap going until he blew it. It'll be interesting to see where he shakes out tomorrow when it really counts.I'm expecting the usual suspects though. |

Bret, Agree with you. The new qualification was not as bad as watching paint dry or grass grow, yet felt like NASCAR qualifications (and i HATE NASCAR). Maybe they should just allow Xbox Live users to hook into F1 cars and drive them... Enjoy the Drive, Steven R. Rochlin

I think the new qualifying blows goats. I also think all this new technology is a contra-intelligent relationship. It is making F1 dumber than it was before. They don't even friggin shift anymore on there own, why not just make a full size radio control car and eliminate the driver entirely for g force and aerodynamic reasons. Have some fat video game freak sit in the pits and drive the damn thing. |

Da Matta was awesome until that last turn, good to see him do well. Aaron, I think this is one reason for the change, the small teams weren't getting any sponsor play before with Ferrari hogging everything up. |

Am I the only one that doesn't like the new qualifying format? You see the ferrari's for 2 minutes and that's it now. It may make the races more interesting if someone makes a mistake since there's only 1 lap. |

BAR did very well, and the McLarens look fast. Williams should pack up and go home ... and both Jaguars had a shocker (history repeating itself ... ). Renaults also looked competitive, so hopefully this is an indication of atleast 4 teams that could give MS some competition (including his team mate). Pete |

F2002 for a few more races. RB just blasted MS by at least a half second for their one lap qualifying for qualifying. I'm kinda figuring out the new rules as I go. |
