Yeah, But any caution indicator that the driver in front of you has applied the brake has to be a plus in some situations on the track. |

My *guess* is that at the speeds (decellerating speeds, I suppose) and distances between cars, at least in F1, a brake light would be fairly useless. If you only reacted when you saw the brake light of a car in front of you, it'd be too late to do anything about it anyway. I'm a new F1 fan as well, got really hooked a couple years ago, now every other weekend is an F1-fest, and the winters are colder than ever... Dave |

Ah, thanks Ernesto for enlightening me. It seems incredible that at those speeds they don't have brake lights -would that give too much away in terms of technique/strategy? It seems like there were a hell of a lot of accidents last year where someone braked unexpectedly and someone else ran over the top of them - in fact, I think it happened to Montoya by Verstappen (sp?) when he was leading the damn race. Don't know if there's any happy medium as a solution. Does this carry over into the other major forms of racing - LeMans, GT, etc.? |

That rear light only comes on (it only blinks) when it rains (low visibility, fog) or when the car enters the pits... Ernesto |

I really am new to F-1! I thought they had a red square brake light right in the middle of the back end of the car, at least it looks like it from all the footage I've watched. Does it serve another function? |

Brake light? I don't think Ralph (or anyone) had a brake light last year. They may this year though, I think I remember hearing about a rule change. But yeah, pretty horrific accident, and the sound of Jacque's car sliding along the chain link fence was pretty horrific too. Dave |

After months of waiting, the F-1 2001 year in review finally came in. This was my first chance to see last years races. Can you believe the footage of the accident in Melbourne where Jacques Villeneuve ran over the top of a braking Ralf Schumacher!? I've never seen anything like it in my life. I'm still fairly new to F-1, but that accident was terrifying. I've watched it over and over again and there seemed to be literally no warning. From Jacques on-board cam I couldn't even see Ralf's brake light come on (if it did). Since this happened awhile ago, this may have come up here before, but as it was my first time seeing it, I just wondered if anyone else had the same reaction. Glad the drivers were OK, but feel sorry for the marshal who died. |
