Sean, Again, great info! The Tamiya Clear that I used was their X-22 acrylic bottle paint, not the spray can stuff. In retrospect, maybe I should have tried the spray can instead. It's possible that I didn't let the color coat dry long enough. It's hard to say because I haven't worked on an upainted model in ages. Maybe I'll give it another go, I've got a few "unbuilts" lying around. |

With regards to sanding, I just lightly wet-sand the primer coat to get it smooth. I don't sand the color coat. Some will lightly sand the color or even the clear coat with 1500 grit paper to remove and ripples or orange peal, then use a scratch and swirl remover, then a polish, then a wax. Some people even use a polishing system which is six finishing papers of 3000 to 12,000 grit, a swirl remover, polish, then wax to get a good shine. I've never had the patience to use that method. Try warming the paint in a dish of hot water before you spray it. It helps it come out more evenly. Make sure it's well mixed (shake for 3-minutes or more) then warm in water, and continue to shake between painting. Warm again before each coat. Even strokes, sprayed perpendicular to each side (top, sides, front, back). Plan how you're going to spray before you actually do it. It definitely takes practice. The key is lots of thin coats versus 1 or 2 heavy coats. A light color like yellow may require as many as 4-5 coats to get good coverage. You can prevent drips and runs by moving the can faster as you paint. This will use more paint, and take longer, but the results are better. Honestly, my best results came with my airbrush, but this is also time consuming as it requires thinner paint, and even more coats to get good coverage. That McLaren was stripped twice before I got it right (but only b/c I'm so damn picky!). I also have a spray booth built from left over deck wood and a 600 CFM Dayton blower ducted out the window to keep out dust and remove the fumes. The only problem I had with cracking was when KC had an ice storm and I lost power for 4-days. The house cooled to about 45, then when the heat came back on, it warmed up so fast that the plastic and paint expanded at different rates and cracked (on that very model after those pictures were taken). I've done other models with the TS paints and clear and not had any problems. The thing to remember is you have to wait until the color coats are completely dry. The surface may feel dry after 1-day, but the underlying layers have not gassed out, or dried, and if you clear over them before they are 100% cured, you'll get cracking. Also, TS clear will eat enamels if they are not dry. Enamels can take up to 10-days to completely cure. I'm not sure that the Tamiya Spray paints are water based.

I don't care what color it is as I can paint it if needed. I just want it to have the injected engine detailing of the BBi rather than the carbs. of the BB. |

Sean, Great paint job!! Excellent work! I've never been able to do a decent paint job myself so I've given up. I could never get the paint to come out even across the entire surface. I usually overcompensate and end up with paint buildup and runs/drips. I also failed to master sanding. Don't laugh at this silly question but doesn't that ADD scratches rather than smooth out the surface? I've always been puzzled by that, please enlighten me. How do you get it glass smooth? Also, about a decade ago, I discovered a problem with Tamiya's water based "Clear" color. It caused the paint to crack severely. This did not happen immediately but over several weeks. Ruined several of my models. Maybe they changed the formula since then. Or is it just better to stay away from the "water" paints? |

Buy the yellow one, take it apart, strip the paint off and paint it red using some Tamiya TS sprays (White Surface Primer and TS-14 RED, and TS-13 clear). The paints can be found at any Hobby Town USA, or a local hobby store. Use brake fluid or Eazy Off oven cleaner, OUTSIDE, to strip the paint. Paint in a well ventilated area free of dust - the garage is a bad place.(these things really, really smell so open the window). Light wet sanding between 2-primer coats w/ 400-grit. 3-coats of red and 2-coats of clear. Allow 20-minutes between each color coat. First coat should be a misting type coat (about 10-inches away) next two should be wet (7-inches away). Allow to dry for 5-days, then clear w/ 20-minutes between clear coats. (Note: Micheals, etc. do not sell Tamiya Paints). This is what you can achieve with white over white and flourecent red.

I don't think you can find a RED 512BB. The ones on the Exoticar site are either silver or yellow, but no red. You want red, you have to settle for the 365. I believe there used to be a red 512 but it must have been taken out of production? I would go and get a 512 for myself but I'd prefer the red. Hey, it's just like trying to buy the real thing, you can't always find the right car with the right color combo!! |

I contacted all those sources and was advised they had no BB512i models. Only the 365GT4BB model is available which of course has a carburated engine, different front spoiler, different rear taillights and exhaust and does not have the rear brake NACA ducts. |

http://www.winecountrymotorsports.com/ This store has the Kyosho brand Boxer models in stock. I saw them over the weekend while I was at Sears Point for the Challenge races. They have 365 and 512 boxer models, so hopefully they know the difference. I agree with Tom, they are nice and worth the money. |

Koysho makes a beautiful 512BB. I have one in my collection. It is one of the nicest models I have. They are a little expensive but it's worth every penny. |
