i would say mon dee al , the ending is closer to al than all and you could say the beginning is more like mun than mon but it all depends on your accent |

"Mondial" = "World" The 500 Mondial sports car of 1954 was a 4-cylinder model named in honor of the 1952-53 World Championships won with 4-cyl engines in F1 cars. The Mondial street cars of 1980-1993 were named in honor of Scheckter's one and only World Championship in 1979, as Andrew suggests. |

Alberto Ascari won at least two back-to-back World Championships for Ferrari (1952-53?) in two liter, 4 cylinder formula 2 cars. In recognition of these World Chamionships, Ferrari named its two liter sportscar for 1954 (technically, it ran in one race in 1953) the 500 Mondial Series I; engine tipo 110, chassis tipo 501. The name continued to the Series II 500 Mondial; engine tipo 111, chassis tipo 510) for 1955. I have no idea if Scheckter's Championship had anything to do with reviving the Mondial name in the 1980s.

I am a little unclear about the history of the name "Mondial". I knoew that the 500 Mondial was a Formula 2 car. The name as I understand it had some relation to Scheckters 2 World Championships. Does anyone know the whole story and why the name was brought back for the Mondial of the '80's. |
