And yes, I would say it was the Enzo of its day. Not in the sense of the Enzo being used as a racecar (which as Matt pointed out was the case with the GTO), but in the sense of a top of the line limited production car. It was a collectible right from the start. The idea being to pass racing homologation laws.
That caught on and so the F40 was the next top of the line limited production run and then the F50 and now the Enzo. From that perspective it kinda set a trend and is Enzo's 'Great Grand Father'.

It was developed for Groupe B racing that never was. It was to go head to head in competition against the 959 and the renault.

288 became the 288 evo which became the F-40

My interest has also been piqued lately by the 288GTO from seeing the re-bodies on Ebay. Stunning. I have a Ferrari book at home (can't remember the title, but has a forward by Niki Lauda) that it was the first production Ferrari to exceed 300 km/hr (186 mph), and in another place says top speed is 190 mph.

I was only 14 in 1984, so I don't remember this car's intro or production or anything. Was this the Enzo of its day? (Price, performance, etc.)

I'm pretty sure only 3 Evoluzione's were made.

Eddie Irvine has a 288 GTO. He bought it with money he made racing in Japan. When he signed for Ferrari he asked Luca Di Montezemolo if he now got a staff discount for parts!:-)

I have a picture on my wall, from a calendar if I remember right, of a 288 gto from when I was a kid and it lists some stats. They are: 1984 GTO 400 h.p. at 7000 r.p.m. twin turbocharged 4 cam engine with 32 valves and a space frame fiberglass body. Performance stats are 0-60 in 5.0, quarter mile in 14.1 with no trap speed listed. Last but not least a top speed of 179 m.p.h.

the gto is more similar to the ruf tuned porsche than it is to the f40. the setup of the gto is almost identical to the f40 except that the turbos and wastegate are smaller. the f40 is clearly derived from the gto but it also clearly advances the performance.

Thanks Andreas, I was just wondering about the GTO, because I knew it had turbos, and that the F40 used a similar engine. Thanks

Andreas,

Do you have a picture of the Evoluzione, as I am not familiar with that one. Thanks.

Dunno about the RUF Porsche, but the GTO has 400 hp and the F40 478. Both use twin turbos. I believe from IHI with intercoolers, but not sure. Both cars are obviously related, the GTO being derived from the 308/328 line. And the F40 being a further advancement of the GTO. In between was the Evoluzione, which looks like an odd mix in between. Both cars's engines are derived/similar to the V8, that powers the 308/328 series.

The late Alboreto (Ferrari's F1 driver at the time these cars came out) said publicly, that the F40 is a further development of the GTO idea. He goes even to say, that the center piece of both cars is nearly identical. He's got a point there.

The 288GTO is a Ferrari that I dont hear about too often, and knowing that it is one of the BIG TURBOS (the other being the F40), would the boost be comparable to the F40 or more towards a RUF tuned 930 porsche????? All 3 cars are nice, but the 288GTO is in the dark to me, does anybody know specs on it?????????
