JRV The oil temp that amazes me is the temp that the Mobil 1 in my boat motors reach. (640CI 600HP) They seem to run at 250 to 280 under load. They rarely run at less than 240. These motors are held together by salt corrosion and have lasted 350 hours. Keeping my fingers crossed. Best Jim |

Ken, Let me clarify a little before this 210F number is taken out of context: In laboratory experiments (testing) at 210F the oil did everything it is supposed to do without degradation over the entire range of it's life (10K-15K miles) and was self cleaning (burned off acids & moisture). At 250F the oil still performed every function of cleaning & lubrication but it's quality 'life span' was reduced, at 280F it's "sheer strenght" starts to deminish and life span again shortened and at 310F the oil looses it's lubricating ability (viscosity breakdown & sheer strenght is deminished by a large percentage). So the 210F number doesn't neccisarly represent a threshold just a data point or frame of reference, and oil is still lubricating up to 280F without serious lubricating side effects. Tranny's on the other hand rountinely run at 280F (260F-340F average range) or higher with no ill effects, although for severe duty use many varieties of tranny oil pumps and coolers are either standard or availible as add ons. |

JRV, great info on optimum temp of 210. May I followup, is 210 the same optimum for Dextron and Gearbox/ differential oil? |

>>>I can't keep it under 240 for more than about half a session<< Here's the basic 'rules of thumb' on Oil Temp: 240 is a little hot, but not really unacceptable or damaging, the Oil is designed to work the best at an optimum temp of 210F, it's not good to run oil temp below 180F (it sludges up and traps acids) or over 260F (it's molecules start to degrade and thinning occurs)280F is hot & 310F the oils lubricating properties seriously degrade and the engine internals can get hurt..

I can't keep it under 240 for more than about half a session... and if I don't cool-down, it'll continue on up around 280. I'll call those dealers and see what they might be willing to do for me. Thanks.

How hot is the oil? With synthetic even a consistent 230oF would not worry me, unless you saw that on the street, too. Looking for a 360 Challenge parts car? Call any dealer involved since 2000: Washington (gotta have 'em) Houston Lake Forest (I know they have one) 847-295-6560 San Fran Shelton Collection Ontario Scottsdale Beverly Hills Orange County Central Fla Atlanta New England WWOC etc. |

Has anyone swapped in the 360 Challenge's larger Oil Radiator and related Air Inlet Conveyor into their 360 Modena? Anyone have a good source for 360 Challenge parts? (Like maybe a totaled one.) (I am interested because I continue to have overheating problems on the track. A larger oil cooler would seem to be the next thing to try.) Thanks.
