Listening to that 1000hp TR leave the parking garage after one of our race nights was a treat I won't soon forget. I've never heard any car sound like that!

I didn't realize the GTO at Norwoods was a carbon-fiber body. It was scary looking before, now it's just plain terrifying. I'll look more closely at it next time I'm there. It will probably be sooner than I'd like to admit.

Actually, When I picked up me 348 TT from Norwoods, I had the pleasure of spending some time with Bob. He was quite candid and spoke with me about Carmacks cars. He's done both the TR and the F-50. You can read about them on his site.
The 288 GTO carbon fiber is a great project.
The block is a custom made block and the heads started off as TR heads, then worked.
Bob's still quite involved in the project but is juggling lots of things right now. He's quite a guy. So is James. If you get the chance to do business with them, I can recommend them. I was pleased to be able to spend some time with them and actually have video of Bob dyno tuning the Motec in my 348TT.

that kind of stuff gets recorded for posterity though by the video game crowds - you might google it or check fatbabies.

Holey... That's a V12 in a GTO!!! I love it!

Jesus flippin H, 1200hp out of it? Looks 550 based. (maybe) with a custom gearbox? Extra displacement with turbos would explain the power.

PS: You'll forgive me I'm sure, but that block looks cast...

Best!
Ben.

The TR showed up at one of our Karting Challenge events last season. The gentleman who owns it now was a very nice guy, and I hope to see him around again.

I just wished I was in the garage when it left. The only thing on the exhaust was the turbos :-)

The black GTO replicar has a powerplant based off of a TR motor, should be 1400 HP or so when its done. It still looks pretty much the same as of a few weeks ago.

Yes, Norwood has perfect "bucks" or whatever you call them for the GTO. They did several over the years.

Yes, the F50 use to be in Norwoods all the time a couple years back. I guess all the bugs have been worked out as I haven't seen it around.

All of these have been done by Norwoods. His GTO is the black one that's been sitting around for years. Over the past two years I've seen a little progress, but not much. Last I heard James was negotiating to take the project over from Bob. I think Bob is too preoccupied with his 4500 HP import stuff anymore.

Never met him in person. Here's the GTO as was about a year ago...

doody, do you remember what the price of the tr was by chance? and any other details about it. just curious as to what such an outrageously modified car is worth vs stock.

As it so happens, Carmack was the founder of IDSoftware--a reputable 3D gaming firm that was responsible for hits such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. He also has a penchant for fast cars--and particularly, the ones we all love..

His stable over the years has included an F40, a turbocharged 1000-hp Testarossa, and a twin-turbo F50 (rumored to produce close to 700hp). He also gave away a 328GTS to the winner of a Quake tournament a few years back.

Does anyone know if he's active in the f-car world? Perhaps a few of you have seen or heard of his F50? Supposedly, he drives it to work everyday (reminds you of Paul Frame).. I was wondering if Carmack still has the F50.

Here's an excerpt of what he had to say about his cars:

"mpav asks:
This is a break from the usual questions from this group, but I thought it would be interesting to know.. You have a couple of exotic sports cars, one being a 1000 horsepower/750 ft-lbs of torque (insane!) ferrari, and I was wondering which one you generally drive to work?

John Carmack Answers:
I drive my twin-turbo F50 almost all of the time. It took a while to get all the bugs sorted out, but it is almost a perfect combination right now. It is light, nimble, and responsive, and 600 hp at the rear wheels is just about perfect for a street car of that configuration.

I only drive my testarossa now when I am low on gas in the F50 or if I need to drive someplace where I think the extra inch or two of ground clearance is important. It is heavy and ponderous, but every time I do drive it, I am impressed again with the power. 1000 hp at the rear wheels is excessive. It takes a while to spin the turbos up to the full 24 psi of boost, but when it has a full head of steam going, it moves like nothing else on the road. It runs away from superbikes on the highway. However, when exercising it, you have a very clear sense that you are taking your life into your hands.

I will probably be getting rid of my TR when my next project car is completed. It is a custom carbon fiber bodied ferrari GTO with a one-of-a-kind billet aluminum twin turbo V12. It is going to make a bit more power than the TR, but only weigh about 2400 lbs. I have a suspicion that we will wind up detuning the engine, because 1 hp / 2 lbs is probably quite a bit past excessive and into the just-plain-stupid realm.

It was supposed to be done two years ago -- mechanics are worse than programmers.

I also have a little MGB that I am theoretically working on myself, but I haven't had time to touch it in six months? "

Here are also some pictures that I found of his cars on the net..
