Tom, this is the way the car has been set up since I got it. It was left over from the challenge days... As for comparing it to a tubi, that would be difficult...I've never heard a tubi on a 348. I do have a digital video of engine revving that I can try to email you over the weekend... if not, I can put it onto an FTP location where you can download it.

LOL ... the recurring nightmare had crossed my mind as well. However, I have taken the car out on very regular all-day drives where I've been in the car for 6-8 hours... no problem. In fact, I even have a custom stereo installed that I can still hear above the engine! Keep your cats on and you will have no problems with the noise. Test pipes or punched through cats make the exhaust SIGNIFICANTLY louder.

btw... no worries on the name... I get it all the time.

Thanks Bryon...You say streetable but isn't this really loud? Could you possibly guage it for me? How much louder than a Tubi is this?

I keep having this recurring nightmare where I have a splitting headache after a 3 hr. drive.

As far as exhaust is concerned, bolt-on.

Tom, the one is the picture looks just like the one I've got. Pretty much a free-flow system. Rob, mine's a daily driver... so streetable, yes. :-)

Btw, I'm not sure if $575 is a good price... they are a bit hard to come by, so maybe that isn't bad at all. Make sure your mounting brackets will fit them, though... might take some welding to make it happen. Rob, was there any special welding to be done to prep the 348 speciale?

Not sure Martin, it was made by QV Ferrari near London. Will have a look underneath at some point.

Rob,

Exactly what I heard about such a setup as well here in Germany: Not streetable! :-(

Con saluti cordialissimi,
Jens Haller

P.S. I am not saying that the sound is bad: Really fantastic as far as I have been told :-)

Tom, that's the puppy. It's loud enough we can't run it at Lime Rock without special permission to exceed sound limits imposed by the community.

But it's sweet sounding.

BTW, I prep'd a 348 Speciale for a customer who used this exhaust with Tubi cat replacement tubes, soooo loud, not streetable IMO.

Hi folks...
Thanks for all the advise on this. I did find a 348 Challenge exhaust, but it's the hard core competition nothing more than straight pipes version and I too am worried that it might be a little more than what I'm after. In case any one's interested, the person with the Challenge pipes is Charles Prince in Texas. You can reach him at 281-568-3131 or email at [email protected].
He's asking $575 for it. Here's a photo.

Thanks again for the advise so far.Upload

which of the challnege did you copy. There are two as far as I know. Byron has the almost straight pipe accross. At standing revs the car is brutal if you are close to it.

Love it though :-O

I've got an exhaust which is a copy of the challenge with tubi test pipes and k&n filters. At rest it sounds fairly standard, perhaps a bit deeper but at higher revs builds to a great scream.

unless you stand behind the car LOL....

Tom,
if you do not want to go all the way out loud but keep some form of decency try just replacing the CATS with test pipes. Erik here can help you out. He did mine on my 349, 1991. He has the template and makes a fine product. The sould improves greatly as does performence.
e-mail me if you need his e-mail I have it home not here, sorry. Hope Erik jumps in.

Jens, I have a factory challenge exhaust on my car... yes, it is quite loud. But, at speeds, it sounds awesome. I also have the single-chambered stock muffler but have been VERY reluctant to change it out only b/c the challenge system sounds and feels great. Plus, inside the car, it is surprisingly quiet. If you roll the windows up and are not on full throttle, it is perfectly fine, even at higher speeds.

You can adjust the idle a bit to be a bit smoother... I don't feel any annoying vibrations, but when I pass through tunnels, I know everyone else feels earth-shattering vibrations on their windows!

As for the tech inspections - can't comment on those. I have had a minor run-in with the police regarding my exhaust, but then they just complimented me on the car, took a picture with it, and let me pass... I just try to be mindful around residential areas not to wake up the entire neighborhood... other than that... it will stay on for the time being!

Tom,

I dont know whether the challenge exhausts for the 348 are still available new from ANSA. But what I have heard for sure from different people is that these systems are really extreme. Extremly loud and even exhaust specialists tell you to stay away if you havent heard it in person. Here in Germany you could not drive with such an exhaust for too long on the street because its just too loud and the police will pull you out not to speak of the fact that you simply dont pass technical check every two years.
Another thing is that with this exhaust you have very annoying vibrations at lower revs because it was designed as a pure race systems (=high revs).

Nevertheless it produces a very good sound... :-)

Ansa makes the 348 Challenge system, which is probably what you want. They're probably only avialable used though. Unless they went back into production, FNA sold their last one in 1997.

Byron, you can order a Ansa from Midas if you like. They also have borla, Dynomax, Supertrap and other brands available.

oh frank... no... no midas on a fcar... that is pure blasphemy...lol :-) Tom, go with a used Ansa (cheaper than Tubi-style)... or if you're lucky, you can find a single chambered stock muffler, then put in test pipes...this would improve your sound and performance but not break the bank. Need super loud? Go for a factory challenge exhaust!

If you don't require an Italian muffler, go to Midas and they can modify any high performance muffler to fit for very little money.

Good Folks,

I'm looking for a used, but in good condition sport (louder)exhaust for my `91 348ts. If you have one or know where to point me to find one, please either respond to this post or email me at [email protected]. I would be most appreciative.

Tom Lassen
