Jeffrey,

The point was to have some fun, make some noise and take some pics/videos! It was a Ferrari Club dyno day and quite a few of us wound the cars up through all five or six gears -after- doing the 1:1 gearing for the horsepower/torque tests. The sounds were really wailing through the air! Here's my car cranked up to 8K rpm in -all- five gears on the dyno:

For the low-lifes sending the e-mails, why don't you get back under the rock you came from.

My 2 cents.

You know, after I typed that I started realizing it was a little silly. I was really just thinking you could go 'faster' on a dyno than on a street, but of course the rpm's at a given speed in a given gear will be the same.

Ken,

I'm confused with this comment:

quote:

On a dyno, you'll read faster on the speedo at lower RPM's than on the street.

RPM is directly related to speed of the driving wheels ... so other than tyre diameter changing due to wheel rpm and load, etc. the speed recorded should be the same as on the road.

But the big difference is the poor little motor will not be able to push the air resistance and thus make those rpm's in the real world on a road.

I think that is actually what you meant but your fingers walked a different path :-)

Question on the 512TR run. What was the point of running it on the dyno in top gear other than the photo? Dyno runs are most accurate in which ever gear gives you closest to 1:1 ratio, usually 4th. Also, I suspect a VW Beetle with the right gearing could do 200 mph on a dyno. It doesn't take much HP to do 200 with no wind resistance!

The '92 512TR rear wheel horsepower rating was 371. I can't remember what brand of ECU chips he has installed.

Air resistance is a big part of what keeps a car from going faster. On a dyno, you'll read faster on the speedo at lower RPM's than on the street.

Thanks to the two little turbos in the exhaust the P-cars won't let my 355 spider (topspeed
on speedo around 186 miles) any chance.
I simply try to ignore them.

BTW kilometer x 0.622 = miles

I have never seen a 575 gauge cluster, but I know it has the tach in the center, but does not have aluminum detail. Another way is that the redline on this car is 8500 which is a 360 the 575 redlines at 7250 (I believe).

It is the aluminum around the gauge cluster. Also having the tach in the center is a 360ism.

Yes, it was Bill Harrah's personal Daytona, with Nevada license plate that said simply "-H-", and I believe it was tested in Nevada near where Harrah's ranch was. At the time, and for quite a while after, it was the fastest recorded speed for a street car in the world!

Do the math, fellas. The 360 is redline limited to about 173 plus a couple of percent for very modest tire growth. The speedometers are optimistic, in the case of the 550, an example showed 208 while tripping the laser and GPS at 194. Finally, where's the blurred road outside?

Guys,

I have a Police, Camera, Action video at home that shows a japanese owner of F40 in Japan reaching 205 mph on a dual carriage way. he filmed it himself with an on board camera attached to the passenger headrest. He produced the video as mass and sold it. The Police saw the video and prosecuted him doing 205 mph in the day time.

For all of you doubters out there. Believe it or not the picture of the 360 is real. I saw the negatives. It took the person 4 separate runs, trying three separate cameras to get it right. I saw all of the messed up photos before this one. Eventually a camera with a manual focus was used. No one would ride him, so he had to do it himself. He had to hold the steering wheel with his knees, hold the camera with two hands, focus it while looking through the lense, grap the wheel again with one hand and take the photo with the other.
It is NOT on a dyno, it is on a road outside of New Orleans, at night, with one crazy buddy.

Ive been in several top seed runs in a 550, F50, and 360. What makes this possible is the amazing downforce of these Ferraris. My brother tried it in a new 996 TT, against this 360, and reported the P car was down right scary and totally unstable past 180. The 360, well, as this guy proved, you can take you hands off the wheel at that speed.

John

By the way, for all of you law enforcement individuals, the people who doubted that this photo, are correct. The PHOTO IS A FAKE. Can you acutally imagine someone beliveing that a person could drive a road car, at night, with his knees and take a photo of the speedometer. NO way. Impossible. Gees you guys sure are easy. It was a fake done with a digital camera. Who could prove otherwise?

In a rented 348 in Vegas, I was letting my camcorder hear the engine for goose-bump sessions later on. I parked at the top of an interstate on-ramp, carefully aimed the video camera toward the engine, between the seats, hit the record button, and slammed the car into gear!

Down the on-ramp we went, the engine just singing, (you all know what I mean!), redlining each gear!... We must have hit the interstate doing about 110mph, and there was a like a 4-mile clearing in front of us, so I wasn't about to stop!

20 seconds or so later, my nerves gave way at 140 mph...I held the speed, grabbed the camera and swiveled it around to record this momentous event in my life.

Later on I watched the tape, and I must have hit the wrong godd***** button! I missed the whole event, but in pushing the "record" button to stop the filming, I got some great footage of my jeans and the seat as the camera rolled around on the way back to the hotel.

when we recently did a VMAX run on a 2 mile runway here in UK a lot of the Porsches were getting speedo reading that were around 5-10mph higher than their actual speed(at around 175mph) so got knows how far out F cars are. (My speedo decided to not work at all that day!)

1. Gentlemen, regarding the authenticity of photos purporting to show very high speeds: DON'T FORGET SPEEDO ERROR. Even if a 360 Modena's top speed is 189 MPH, it wouldn't surprise me to see a 360 hit 190 (or 200) MPH on the speedo. Virtually every modern speedometer has some error built-in, and invariably on the high-side. On nearly every Ferrari I've driven, the speedo has been in error from 5-15%. I use 10% high as a rule of thumb. Seriously; check it out for yourself (use one of those dumb-ass radar signs, or use a GPS, or use a good stopwatch and mile markers).

2. I've never heard of a 360 coming with speed limiters. The big three German manufacturers have a gentlemen's agreement of a top speed limit of 155 mph (250kph). BTW, Porsche never agreed to join. Some other car companies have installed speed limiters if the car came with tires rated at a lower top speed than the car, for liability reasons. Home country Japanese cars all have limiters as well. It's easy enough to remove the speed limiters from BMW/MB/Audi, though. I can't imagine that the 360 would have a speed limiter, as 189 mph, the listed top speed, is about as fast as the car can go with only 400hp and a decent amount of drag.

vty,

--Dennis

Awesome pictures. I heard the first year the 360 came out there was some kind of speed limiter for the sake of aerodynamics, and 360's owners complained they were getting blown away 996 Turbo's on the autobahn, and then Ferrari removed it and this raised the top speed? Is this true?

The section of road Kelly refers to is a raised bridge (no chance of animals on the road) in the swamp which is nearly dead straight for 18+ miles.
There are two exits on that stretch and there is very little traffic on/off- just people who fish.
If someone wanted to max out this could be a place to run it late at night.

Looks like about 2700 miles on the odometer. Wonder who it could be..... :-)

Thanks for the clarification -- I had assumed that the car had been modded, and that it was probably being dyno'd rather than run on the street. I appreciate you confirming both points.

The pics a keeper!!

Both the water temp (160) and the oil temp (190) are too low for this not to be on a dyno; water temp especially. Oil pressure looks low for that kind of oil temp.

The TR above has temps that look right.

Ghostrider,
The 512TR photo is indeed REAL. It was taken at our club's dyno day in Seattle. I sat in the passenger seat and took the photo. The cars owner took it up beyond the normal redline (he has performance "chips")and pegged the speedo. I took the photo as the revs were on the way when he put the car in neutral.

Not to disrespect, but the fact that you can't see anything out the front suggests either a photoshop or a dyno for the first pic.

Agree with the assessment on the second pic too; can't believe the 512TR is at full speed, and yet the tach is commensurate with it -- seems doubtful (or modified).

Yep, it's a friend's 512TR on a dyno. The rpm's were on the way down when I snapped the photo from the passenger seat.

We recently had a 550 Maranello on the dyno which redlined(rev limiter)at 7,600rpm in 6th gear and showed 212MPH on the speedo!

Boy, Kelly, that looks more like either Photoshop or Dyno Days to me...especially considering the flash from the camera on the steering wheel & dashboard. Kinda tough to operate a camera when you are doing 190 on the road, what with bumps, wind buffeting, etc...

Looks like the tach on the 512 is doing about 6,000 RPM but the speedo is reading 200+.

Must be special gearing and a very modified motor to do that.

I went off the scale on my car Bubba! I see you couldn't bury your speedo!

All jokes aside, that is impressive. I have opened mine up once and I estimate somewhere around 140 (just by tach). I doubt I would have had the balls to take the photo.
