Everything around here is either flat and straight for 3 counties, or 2 lanes and crowded with minivans. All the roads that were fun 10 years ago now have walled subdivisions of McMansions on either side and a mall/faux downtown/SuperWalmart every few miles.

The local FCA just had a drive to tortilla Flat a few months ago.

I am not sure, but isn't 93 from wickenburg the road that goes through Yarnel Hill? if so that is a big Speed trap. It would be one of the best roads in the state, but they have a couple of state troopers sitting at the top of the hill using vascar to trap sports cars and bikes. the speed limit changes from 65mph to 35mph in less than a mile. If you go further past Wickenburg towards Las Vegas and take 96 through skull valley you will find some great sweeping turns and nice straights in all but zero traffic. It makes the trip to prescott about twice as long, but without the hastle. The only problem is a couple of dips that we scrapped a little in a 365 GT.

I have been on 89A through Jerome. The views are really great and the road is wonderful.

As for Canyon Lake, I've done that road many times too. Usually I'm towing a boat so the driving isn't very "sporty". If your out just enjoying the drive go past the lake to Tortilla Flat. Fun place that makes a great turn around point and good place to grab a snack.

Another great road that comes to mind here in Arizona is the rest of US 89 from Prescott to US 93. The stretch from Prscott to Wilhoit is some great mountain driving.

Terry, i was definately on that part of 89. The town of Jerome is an interesting place to say the least. My dad was describing how peole there worshiped quartz rocks or something like that. I made the descent into jerome at night though, so i probably missed alot of scenery. From Jerome you get a veiw of the expansive valley below. We didnt get a chance to stop there because we wanted to get to sedona that night. I just loked at a map, and it turns out that i was on the road brad described. We werent in a sportscar (unless you consider a rental v6 mustang convertible a sportscar), but it was fun anyway. The scenery was so amazing, you alsmot dont want to go fast. You want to give yourself as much time as you can to take it in.AZ is full of great roads. A few summers ago my father and I drove from san diego to the grand canyon, then to pheonix, stopping at alot of attractions. One place i didnt get to see was monument valley, which i was pissed about. One of these summers i'll make it back there though. Idaho also had some great roads with good scenery, although the part i liked best about idaho was 100 miles from any road.

Brad-Mo,
Have you ever taken 89A starting as far south as prescott through Jerome. It is fantastic, the switch backs and the views, WOW!

Also you may want to try going out to Canyon Lake, if traffic is light (early morning) it is one of the best roads. I will have to dig out a map to tell you exact details, but it is out towards apache junction.

Highway 550 (ironic, eh?) from Montrose through Silverton & Ouray to Durango, Colorado.

The road through Kayenta, Arizona that goes into Monument Valley.

Various Hill Country roads near Austin & San Antonio.

EFWUN, are you familiar with Sweetbriar Road, off of Jericho, in Nassau...? It's about a 10 minute stretch of the darkest, twistiest road i've ever been on... Balls to the wall, i could only get my Sentra a little over 60mph on that road... Driving on it during the day is no fun, though... :-)

Oyster Bay Parkway is nice, but i find that i'm insanely lucky with the Northern State Parkway, when it comes to the lurking fuzz... i was just on it, this morning, from 2 to 3... Not the most private or scenic road, but to me, it's gorgeous...
Late at night or just before sun rise, going up and down the little hills between the exits, around the turns, under the over passes- i just get totally lost in the road and that's when my concentration peaks; the music blaring, my singing tapers off, unconsciously, as i grip the wheel with both hands and ease myself into the turns at 90+ er- um, 55 mph as if i'm skiing... i want to mount a camera, somehow, in the car, so i can watch the video when i'm not able to go out driving...

Damnit, i hate this office, i wanna go for a drive...! :-)

You guys sound really lucky!! We moved from Northeast Pa (beautiful twisties everywhere) to Long Island for work reasons. Lots of traffic, and the always enjoyable Long Island Expressway. Ding!,pock!! ding!
There are, however, some nice roads up on Brookville and Oyster Bay, but even those are fairly congested. Perhaps retirement to Arizona or North Carolina?

Brad-Mo, I think i have been on that road you describe. Is there a senic overlook on that roab where you can see the road winding up the hill? If so, i have a picture of me standing on the wall. If i remeber correctly, it goes through a pine tree forrest. Its been 3 years, so i'm not sure if that was the road though. Either way, there are alot of cool roads in arizona with great views too.

Brad,

Virtually EVERY road in a 10 sq mile radius is a GREAT drive. Each one is different and can pick a road according to overall conditions and skill level desired. You want winding roads with some straights and elevation changes, take a right here. You want heavy twisty bits, go left. Want a combination, go straight for a mile then turn left. Etc etc etc.

Enjoy the Drive,

I thought it would be interesting to hear from you all about your favorite local roads. As for me my favorites here close to home are:

US 89A - Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff, AZ
This beautiful drive goes through secnic red rock country through Sedona then along Oak Creek. The narrow two lane road the winds up 2000 ft in elevation in about 5 miles. No real chance to go fast but some tight corners and great scenery.

Another is FR205/19. This is a 16 mile (Approx) road that ends at Bartlett Reservior. It has a great combination of outstanding twisty sections which even at the posted limits are very exciting, (a great off-camber left that will keep you alert), and sceneic straight sections. Very light if any traffic during the week. The ribbon of asphalt is in great condition. The road goes through some incredible desert scenery.

Has anyone here driven these examples? What are your favorite places to excercise your car? I wish I had pics of the roads. If the rain stops here I'll go out and snap a few and post them. If any one has a nice pic of thier favorite please post it!
