James,
Dublak is the authority on this kind of stuff, and apparently it is working well. I would still like to have been the Glassman on that project.
There are dollar signs all over it!

Bill
The glass is heat treated and laminated safety glass. So far it's lasted 15 years and survived two hurricanes and the perfect storm. The glass floats in the system and is rated to 125mph continueous. BTW when I had it made these were the largest panes that could be bent. They are remarkably distorsion free. Dublack made the glass. They are car guys and have also made custom windshields. If anyone is interested let me know.

Bill is right as there are only certain types of films which are allowed safely to be put on dual pane glass. As far as film goes I don't know much of commercial films made from Johnsons but if it's anything like their automotive film it's pure garbage as it failed within 3 years and look terrible from the beginning as it fades fast in chunks. Llumar isn't priced much higher for it's cost for nothing. I've done plenty of testing on other auto film manufacturers products and for one reason, and it is that I would not put anything less worthy on any of my cars nor would I do that to any of my customers cars either. Simply said...

James,
Be careful. If you have insulated glass, or two lites of glass with an airspace in your curtainwall you can have heat build up. If the glass is not tempered or heat strengthened you will have glass breaking!
From the looks of your place its going to cost you a bundle. I wish I was your Glassman!

After trying several films on my glass curtain wall I finally used a film called XIR. It removes 99%UV and has a very slight green tint (to the eye) but does not distort colors at all. It makes a HUGE difference compared to Film that I tried on the indoor surface of the glass. XIR is bonded to a layer inside the glass. From what I understand this film is being used by Porsche as an option in the Cayanne. If you were willing to try it might be possible to come up with a custom windshield mfg to make a winshield with internal XIR film which, as P is doing it it must be legal. There are Co's. that if you have a windshield for them to copy will make a legal windshield for about $1500. On a Boxer it would make a big difference. This glass is a $1080 option on the Cayanne. (For all the windows)
Des The Contessa always told me that before I got married to make sure that I checked out what kind of camera she had. A Lieca was ok but a Hasselbad was better...

Use Design Plus or Heat Master brands made by Johnson. There is a guy in NY who does a great work weather it be at your house or on your car. Anyone interested I will send his name and number.

Geez, James, is that your house...? it looks like a small city...! How far away did you have to go to get the whole thing in one shot...? That must be one helluva panoramic option on your camera... Is that a NASA satellite photo...? :-)

This is my field of expertise, To answer Franks question there is a clear film that blocks 99.9% UV and is sold through Courtalds which I carry and use, and as far as I know it is the most potent UV shield in the market and the only one I know that passes legality in all 50 states but you cannot put it on the windshield according to laws. I carry a 50 state regulation sheet so I know the legalities in all 50 states on what shades are legal to put on, just some states enforce it more than others. California is hardcore and they will pull you over even if they can see you clearly except for the 88% UV shield. Now as far as heat and glare goes it blocks unfortunately only 14% whereas you can get a slightly darker film with better heat reduction. I would stay away from sputtered metalized film as they have too much distortion in the film "orangepeel look" and shrink marks appear down the road in time. I have installed and tested just about every popular known brand of film and the one that has worked the best is Llumar and I use the ATR series due to the overall performance. I have yet to have a car come back for any warranty issues. As far as shrinking windows to shape I have seen very few who actually knows how to do it right as most people use a hard card and force the film down to the glass with the heatgun and there is a theory on why there is premature film failure of film pulling away from glass causing bubbles. The method is of proper use is a trade know how and only known in the hands of few and I only know one person besides I who learned the technique of proper shrinking. Anyway getting back to the subject tinted windows is a definate plus as it will preserve the interior and hold the glass in place if struck on impact and these important 2 reasons among others are why it's better to do so. I am open to any questions.

Frank.

Actually my windshield is done in 32% and it isn't really legal here in Alabama but it isnt very often enforced here locally. Yes the benefits are really good. It is like always parking in the shade, it helps the air conditioner catch up quicker when it has been sitting in the sun for a while

Also when a windsheild is done it reduces glare and to me it makes the interior overall more comfortable. I rarely have to use my sun visors.

As I said I like tinted windows and I think Ferraris look really cool tinted. To me I think tint looks good not even to mention it keeps the car cooler on the inside and the protection it provides against UV and other harmful rays.

I didnt want to scare you about the windsheild, it can be done in fact I recommend it. Just choose your installer carefully. I myself do not own a Ferrari but I do think that they do deserve more care than the average car when applying the craft of tinting.

If anybody has pictures of tinted Ferraris please post them, thanks

David

David, I take it that your truck's front windshield is done in clear ? If so, have you noticed a real difference in solar heat coming into your truck ?

Frank,
You are correct, there are some film manufacturers that make tint that is clear however the average Joe would not be able to put it on a windshield. To apply tint to a windshield it would have to be "heat shrunk". This process is accomplished by laying the tint across the windshield and using a heat gun to heat the film and work it so is conforms to the shape of the window. This is a commom process used on back windows but front windshields are different because they are laminated safety glass as opposed to tempered and it is not advised to use more than a minimal amount of heat. Excesive heat will crack the glass and it sounds like a firecracker when it happens. It can be done with caution, I have the front windsheild on my GMC Sierra Xcab done all in one single sheet of tint thereby avoiding any seems and this makes it look factory.

I am for tinted windows but if you want the front window done on a Ferrari I would definitly make sure it is done be someone who has plenty of experience and someone you can trust.

Low E glass windows. The tint is seperate from the UV screening which is clear.

3M has clear solar films. The most efficient, though not practical for existing windows, is film sandwiched into the glass. I've used these films in my windows and it makes a huge difference.

I understand that some company makes a solar film that is clear so you can put it on your windshield. However, I have been unable to locate it. If you find some let me know as I need some for my Boxer.

My 328 is awful when the sun is out. I would like to have some sort of reflective coating on the windshield and side windows. The roof of the GTS is also not well insulated. You can feel the heat coming through the removable roof when you drive in the summer. To make matters worse, my 328 is black. Next time I travel I might do something really horrible like putting tin foil on the roof. Change an emissivity from 0.95 to 0.05 and you've made quite a difference.

Just wanted to know how Ferrari owners feel about tinted windows? Also if you have one with tinted windows I would really like to see pictures. Thanks

David
