Correction: not all the belts, all but the timing one. I wonder why? But this is a correct info since given to me by the mechanic at Austin Imports. I was the highest bidder on the car on ebay at $23, and even offered more after... I guess I will have a PPI done before. Especially since I will have to drive the car 1200 miles back home...
Just like you, I am on the market for ultimately a 328 GTB, maybe more realistically a 308 (QV or 2 valves). Anyway, the idea is to have enough money to maintain the car, if not, it is worth nothing...
Still looking and trying to be patient.

I went back through my notes and I don't have anything about a major service so my memory is bad on that one.

What I have from talking to the owner is this;
- New paint in 1985 (done correctly)
- Stored for 8-9yrs by 2nd owner who just "showed" the car.
- A/C changed to R-134a
- Current owner is 3rd, put 200-miles on it.
- All books and tools.

Basically it sounds like a garage queen. I'd definitly have a PPI done before even making him an offer. Based on the fact that it's been hardly driven it could need new seals, or even rings.

Post a request for a PPI Mechanic near Cincinati or Cleveland - the cars in Dayton - (unless you trust Austin Imports?) and get that done if you're really interested. How did you get that # by the way (or name if you've not talked to him?)

I think he's asking $31K for the car as I found it on one of the links to online ads. The phone number matched what I have for him.

If it needs what you think it does, he should have taken the 22K he got on e-bay.

NOTE: The $31 asking price comes from me! I talked with him on February 27th the first time this car was on e-bay. Based on what he told me (which is why I though there was a major done recently) he asked what I thought the car was worth. I told him if everything he told me was true, the "right buyer" may go as high as $30K. Again, I got the impression it was mechanically flawless which is why I quoted the high end price. Probably a bad idea on my part and after I said it, I knew it was a bad idea. The on-line ad appeared the day after I talked with him for $31 with the first name the same, but the last name different (strange?). Maybe he was worried an e-bay buyer would get pissed if he advertised the car in addition to posting it on e-bay.

Also, when I talked with him I told him that regardless of what was agreed to on the phone or e-bay (although I never bid on it) I would not hand over a dime until I had a PPI done, and he was agreeable to that.

I am trying to be patient too, but the more I wait, the less I like about what I hear. I have a feeling this garage queen may need more than just a major, possibly even a rebuild which to me would value it closer to $15-$17, factoring in a $10K for the rebuild which I what I've read quoted here.

Finally, the only reason I've not gone to look at it is I've not had time and he sounded like he was in a hurry to sell so I figured it would be gone or I'd have had a PPI done by now.

PS Don't think I'm going to get into a bidding war or anything, I'm not. I started looking for a 308 only 2-months ago and I'm in NO hurry at all. I'm just trying to gather what I can about the car, and this place is a good source so if this helps you, great. There is another '77 GTB that was for sale in Virginia with complete records from Ferrari Atlanta 72K-miles (e-mail and I'll send you the #)

If you do get it, I'd be interested to know what you find out, and what you pay for it.

EDIT Below you mention all the belts were replaced and this is what the owner told me. I guess I assumed when he said the "belts were done" that was the major service.

assume=ass u me !

Sean,
I agree with you, and that's why I was asking the question.
I talked with Scott at Austin's Imports and got the list of their last maintenance....

patience, indeed. I made him an offer related to the ferrari market letter cost, minus what I beleive are going to be the costs for main repairs (as mentioned previously) or to ship (if I can't drive it back). No answer yet

Arnaud, Peter is not the owner. His car is a GTS, not a GTB and the car on e-bay is not a euro.

Who was the mechanic you talked with?

thanks

I spoke to the mechanic that handled the last maintenance. He didn't have any history of the car before this last maintenance last month.
All belt replaced but the timing belt (why?), clutch not checked, water pump not checked, and apparently from the owner's reference to his own tread (see reply #2), the car may have some gearbox issues...
I tried to talk to the owner, left him my phone number but so far he didn't call, just reply to my emails.
Since you were more lucky, what was his feed back a month ago?

What "mechanical repairs" are to plan for? I talked with the guy over a month ago about this car and he claimed it was almost perfect. I think it had a 30K done just last summer, and the pictues he sent to me it sure looked nice.

What and where did you find out about the "mechanical repairs"?

thanks

S/N 20813
Does someone has information on this car?
Apparently there are some mechanical repairs to plan for, but I didn't find any history on the car....
