Crockett was a vice cop (hence, Miami Vice). The TR was supposed to be part of his "deep cover" and was presumably filched by the Miami PD from one of those govt auctions after the previous owner had been sent to sleep with da fishes!

Other tell-tale indicators of Crocketts "extreme 80's coolness":

-$1500 pastel sport coats
-permanent 5 o'clock shadow
-$900 loafers that look like slippers
-lives on a boat
-has an alligator instead of a dog
-two words: tapered pants!
-hangs out with a cool as ice brotha

That show was a riot - definitely had a big influence on me as a kid (which is probably a bad thing :-) )

Jonas, on the show Crockett was supposed to be a high roller drug dealer not a cop. The Ferrari was part of his cover.

Jonas, on the show Magnum didn't own the Ferrari, Robin Masters did. By the way, was Magnum suppose to be gay ?

Maybe not a Ferrari at all? - It's very unrealistic that a cop can afford a high-priced top of the end Ferrari.

So maybe a Eldorado or a PT CruiseR? :-)

I agreed that regardless of your wealth you should buy what you want. But, on the show Robin Masters was supposely a rich flamboyant world traveler/jet setter . Since he never even drove the Ferrari he apparently owned it as a status symbol . That being the case, the top of the line would have been more of a status symbol IMHO. I suspect the shows producers just didn't have a clue as to what Ferrari offered. And Noel, if your requirements were an open top i would have gotten the 550 Barchetta. But, it was your call and if you're happy then that's all that matters I suppose. Even an ugly women gets lucky every once in a while.

I totally agree with Mark, with what I paid for my 360 spider, I could have easily bought a 550, I just like the 360 spider the best, whatever the price.

About the whole Robin Masters thing... I remember back in the 80s (when I was just a punk teenager), my dad had some friends who had gotten extremely lucky in the market. One of them, in particular, had retired early with about 40M dollars AND (you guessed it!) drove a 308. He also had an AMG Benz (as opposed to a Rolls, AM or Bentley) I think that, when you have an unlimited budget, many times you just buy what you like since you really don't have anything to prove. Afterall, the TR (despite being one of my personal all time favorite cars) certainly isn't everyones cup of tea! The styling is very extreme to say the least.

The Crockett replacement would need something very Miami and very fast and nmble. A yellow 360 spyder F1. 19" rims, Maybe a high performance body package for a different look..

The Tubbs replacement should now be a chick.. Tough, full of attitude and completely HOT..
She will ride shot gun in the 360, but will occassionally ride her red or yellow 748 Ducati wearing her low cut jeans and thong underwear..
(you know what I mean) :-)

I know that if I were as rich as Robin Masters was portrayed as being, I would have bought the top of the line Ferrari available at the time rather than the bottom of the line 308; even though I acknowledge that the 308 is a fine car. If they would have used a Porsche would it had been the 924 rather than a 928 or 911, or a Vega rather than a Corvette or a Neon rather than a Viper ?

from the 308 FAQ website

Perhaps no other single Ferrari model captured as much attention as the 308 GTS featured on the CBS television network show, Magnum, p.i.

The show, starring actor Tom Selleck, premiered December 11, 1980 and ended May 1, 1988 at 11:00 pm after 162 episodes.

The original 308 was a 1979 GTS that was purchased in New Jersey. The car reportedly was driven across the country on a promotion tour before being shipped to Hawaii for filming. Larry Manetti, Orville "Rick" Wright, supposedly bought the GTS for himself when it was replaced by the 308 GTS Quattrovalvole. The cars were auctioned off at very high prices at the end of each season to "enthusiastic" buyers.

Tom has said that the first car had a racing clutch and was difficult to use when they were filming. (The older 308's had a very stiff clutch compared to the newer ones.)

There were two 308's used by the production company. One was for close ups and the other for action scenes. It was not uncommon to see various production company employees using the "beater" to get lunch or other errands.

Both cars had their driver's seat modified to accomodate Selleck's six foot, four inch height. The seat rails were adjusted in addition to taking material out of the bottom seat cushion. Tom recently mentioned that his inability to fit in the car was part of the show's humor.

Porsche offered a blank check and a 928 to the show's producer. "No thanks" was the reply. The Ferrari was receiving fan mail and was considered important to many plot lines.

If you're travelling to Hawaii click here for a map to Robin's Nest.

i heard this one a while back, and i have no way of knowing whether its true or not but.....
i heard that the producers of the show wanted a car that magnum could stand up through the open top.
at the time they called porsche to ask them if they could specially build a couple of 928's with bigger than normal sun roofs. porsche responded that they would not because it wasn't a regular option and would have a hard time telling people they couldn't have it on their own cars. what a mistake that was......

anyway, thats why it was a 308 rather than a 365.

On a similar subject, I often wonder why Magnum PI used a 308 rather than a Boxer or 365GTC4 or later a TR since Robin Masters would have had enough money to own the top of the line Ferrari available at the time. After all, Crocket first used a Daytona(kit car) and later the TR as they were the top of the line at the time and he was supposely a rich drug pusher.
