Yuo I had the same problem, Theres an electric switch behind where you install the key. That switch was half open all the time on my 512TR & was killing my battery & causing the problem you described. Look there first. Good luck

It's a standard problem. The start wire goes through 3 clips on it's way to the starter solenoid. Most of us have installed a manual start wire to "hot wire" the solenoid - that works 99% of the time.

Steve, it was me who had that problem on a regular TR. I jusst bought a brand new-never used starter and it cleared up all the problems. I would turn to the key and absolutely nothing would happen--I would have power though. Hopefully it is not an ignition switch because that costs about $1400. Another thing I noticed that helped to contribute was low battery. I put a new battery as well and have never had (?) the problem since.

Lou -- I'd just cross-reference the stock (Bosch?) solenoid to an Ace-Electric solenoid if possible -- for just ~$35 it's an easy low cost test IMO. Not saying that it can't be something else (so, of course, as the others suggested check your primary wiring and the voltage on the start command line at the back of the solenoid when cranking, if possible), but it was for me and several others (if you search on "TR solenoid" you should get the sordid history).

WilliamH -- You reported a similar 512TR start problem -- what was the fix in your case?

Henryk may be correct, also may be the key switch with intermitant contact, which is my guess when you say that nothing energizes when turning the key to "on" and then "start". Sometimes the guages and lights will come on but a ground or battery cable problem will limit power to actually turn the engine over. But you describe no power at all? I would test the key switch while wigling the key back and forth to try to recreate the phenomenon.

???

Probably a loose ground cable to the chassis; loose battery terminal wires.

Battery fine, everthing else works, twist key, nothing, no click, no selonoid sounds, nothing. Try again and again then all of a sudden, it works, engine roars to life. Happens 1 out of say 4-5 starts. Hot or cold. Ideas??
