I was very fortunate; my dad taught me to drive a shift on his 365 when I was 13. ( I was an IKF regional champ, and I guess he figured it was better to show me than have me sneak the car out!)
He let me take my girlfriend to our prom in his Daytona. VERY fortunate, here!!

I learned to drive a stick by driving my parent's Porsche up and down the street when I was 10-11. I never hit anything, but I remember the clutch being a very difficult concept to grasp. I didn't drive an Fcar until I was 22 (which happened to be a Cali-Idaho trip a few weeks ago-thanks dad).

This was a tough one for me. My stepson really wanted to drive the 348, and I would have been happy to let him have that experience, but he screwed up his driving record and my insurance company made me sign a paper stating that he would NOT be allowed to drive any of my cars at any time! Does that make me the bad guy? I still intend to let him try it someday, but I certainly can't turn him loose in it with no insurance. Sorry, dude...

Coming back from CA last summer I let my (just barely) 14 yr. old son drive the 328 for about 100 miles through Eastern AZ on a deserted highway. He got it up to 100 several times, a natural speed for the car. Maybe passed 1 or 2 other cars in the whole time.

I started driving at 11.

I let my son drive my 308 QV on his 20th birthday. He just drove a couple of miles from our house with his lady friend. Got a speeding ticket from one of the local police departments. Wasn't really going that fast. He has always been a careful, good driver. I suspect that it was just a jealous officer -- probably did not think that a kid that age "had any right to drive an f-car." Jerk.

Well I'm 17 and still waiting :-) I dont think I will until I purchase one of my own though. Hopefully in 10 years! My car is a manual transmission and Ive driven several other older stick cars that my friends own and so on...I think I could do it. Not well, but at least get it going. The thing I would probably have the hardest time getting used to is the lack of power steering. Ive only driven a few cars without it and only for a short time (just around the block) and it took me a while to get a feel for it.

i let my son drive in empty parking lot using 1st gear and no gas. he did very well without stalling it. unfortunately he's not too interested in cars yet as i had to convince him to try it but he's only 14. i wonder if anyone younger ever drove a ferrari?

I let my favorite nephew drive my 246 Dino when he was 15 years old. He drove it in a very large parking lot. The look on his face was "priceless". He learned how to drive a stick on this car. This was all years ago......we are still best of friends.

I was 20 when I first drove a 328GTS, drove it over two days for a good 100 miles or so. Was one of the greatest experiences of my life--maybe the best actually.
At that point, I would say I had significant experience with manual trannys and higher perf. cars so I was aware of how the car might be. Additionaly, and perhaps the most important, it was a great treat from my dad and we shared a great father/sons (my younger brother drove it also, he was 17 at the time--lucky bastard) experience which I'll never forget.
I believe this sort of topic has come up before and as long as your son is familiar with higher performance cars and is good with a stick and understands and appreciates the car, which looks to be the case, I think it will be a great experience for both of you. As long as your comfortable with it, then do it.

23.

A youngster should definitely learn on a manual transmission, which you look like you've got.

I was 14 when I first took my brother's Jetta out (manual transmission).

15 when I first went driving with dad in the SAAB 9000T (also manual transmission).

I'd say 15 to 16 is OK. It would be very helpful if he understood the basic priniciples before first going out.
