Arthur I saw a guy with a Harley with a side car this afternoon coming the other way, when I got close enough I saw he had too little guys (maybe 4 or 5) in the sidecar, both wearing helmets and jeans outfits, it was cool. I thought of your story again, lol.

I have a good story:

In 1978, I was living in Kensington, California, just above UC. At the time I was starting racing, and to get more track time, I was a "monkey" on a sidecar with my friend Doug Daniels. On the 4th of July, 78 Doug came over and brought the sidecar. I was living just outside of Tilden park, a tourist attraction. We unloaded the sidecar and took it for a ride in the park, at about 100mph, passing cars, not stopping for the police.

We made a quick exit to my house, put the sdiecar in the garage, got out of our leathers, and sat on the porch with a beer and watched the police, sirens on, looking for the two person gokart.

I was a 5 year lawyer at the time, and should have known better, but we didn't get caught.

Tyler, i wish my parents knew about paying off cops in mexcio. they wouldnt let me go to cancun with my friends for spring break, they thought i would get arrested or something. Turns out whenver they got in trouble a 20 was all it took to get off. One of my friends crashed a moped, it cost him 20, another was "tresspassing" on hotel property, another 20. i wishthat happened in the US.

Aweful story.....

Knew somone that had a Yellow Porsche 911 Turbo LE lightweight with the uk license plate "TRY 1T"

He's on the motorway, cruising in the outside lane at the legal limit around 75mph.... Car rushes up behind him lights flashing and almost rams him. He moves over. It whizzes off.
Later he overtakes the same car... The car rushes up and almost rams him again at ~75mph.... He moves over, thinking what a crazy bastard.... it whizzes off.
Later he overtakes the same car AGAIN. Once more it rushes up to him and this time he thinks 'F**K This' and sinks the throttle - hits around 125mph to get away from this crazed lunatic.....

Some time later the car has caught up. This time it has blue lights flashing and a SIREN! Its a cop who pulls him over and arrests him for driving without due care and attention....
One f**ked up incident.

Not Ferrari Related, because I don't own one, but when I was 16 I was driving my girlfriend's new camaro. We were driving down the main drag in my small home town and this Thunderbird was tailgating me, badly. I pulled off on to a gravel road up to a stop sign and he was still there. Being only 16, the only resonable thing to do was to shower his car with gravel and race him up the hill. So that is what I did. By the time I got the car up to about 80 in a 35 I noticed the T-bird coming very fast. I then noticed the little red light on the dash, it was an unmarked sherriff. HE let me off with a warning. I thought I was in real trouble.

Patrick I think you should go do donuts in the police parking lot. What a bunch of aholes. I used to race one of the cops every Wednesday after Rescue at like 10pm. Nothing like an undermarked cop car racing a red Ferrari once a week. I could've killed him all the time, but I had to show a little restraint, don't want to get pulled over. lol. One of the real young cops in the town next to me (we go to the same gym and he went to my HS before I did so I know him) used drag race me in his cruiser all the time in the middle of town. I was like seriously come on. Another cop in the town on the other side (he was on Rescue with me) used to pull me over like twice a day, but then just drive by and laugh at me. I guess things are a little different out in NJ.

Not Ferrari related but might be of interest.

Some years ago during a business trip to Mainland China, our minivan got pulled over by a motorcycle cop in Tianjin. The cop claimed that our driver was trying to perform a U-turn in a freeway. The only thing our driver did was turning on his left turn signal to merge onto the freeway. We tried to put our point across to this countryside copper but he kept adjusting his machine gun. That really made us nervous because nobody else was around in this rural part of town. Well, this went on for a while and we realized that this guy's probably looking to shake us down for some cash. Finally, our Chinese business partner paid the cop off and he let us go without further trouble. Apparently, this happens quite often in rural areas in China.

JMG,
I'm not surprised that you had a problem with your TCab in the Thousand Oaks area. I moved into that area a couple of years ago with my 88TR - and apparently it caused quite a stir with the local federales. We were moving from Malibu to Agoura Hills and due to work pressure and no local smog certification places that would touch my car, I was forced to leave it unregistered until I could get the smog certificate. I went to the DMV for the one day permit to move it from old house to new house sucessfully and promptly parked in the garage. The next morning the moving truck arrived - the movers wanted to bring the furniture through the garage instead of through the front door so I parked the TR in front of my own house. Fifteen minutes later, my daughter comes running in to say that the police are taking the car. I look out the window to see a Deputy arguing with a tow truck driver who is afraid to tow my car with his standard rig. I ran out to question why they were towing my car - because my registration had expired 3 days before and I was parked on a public road. Not only would he not listen to my explanation and let me move the car back in the garage, but he insisted that the car be towed even though the tow truck driver wouldn't do it unless he went back to the shop for the flatbed. I had to wait for nearly 2 hours for the guy to get back, tow it to their yard, and then pay $135 to buy it back. The Deputy told me that after springing the car from "jail", I was free to drive it home and put it back in the garage - but here is a ticket for $85 for "operating an unlicensed vehicle on a public road"for parking in front of my own house.

As a postscript, two weeks later I went back to the DMV for a one day permit to go get it smogged the next day. Bright and early the next morning, I took the TR to the gas station that was 3 blocks from my house. I hadn't been there for 2 minutes when a different deputy pulled into the gas station and parked on the opposite side of the pumps - close enough to watch me, but not close enough for interaction. After completing my servicing, I started up the car and pulled onto the street to go back home - you guessed it, full lights and siren. After about 15 minutes of paperwork review, radio consultation with headquarters, and having every new neighbor drive by and point, it was determined that my paperwork was in order and that I was not currently a threat to society, however I was warned that this was a zero tolerance area and to watch my step.

BTW, this is the ONLY time I have ever been pulled over in 16 years of driving Ferraris - and we moved about 100 miles away 6 months later.

These stories are great guys! When I was a lot younger(with a lot less to lose) I used to run from the cops all the time. I drove vette's and BMW's and I used to do a lot of racing and other stupid things. These days I just drive fast and make damn sure MY attorney is the better one. I have gotten lots of tickets but I fight every single one and I'm always amazed how many you can win. I just use my standard response to the officer and smile.

Officer: Are you in a hurry son?

Me: Nope, I'm just a speeder

If someone (like a cop) saw a ferrari they might get angry or annoyed because of someone spending a lot of money on a car or to who off ur wealth..while this isnt the way we see it, a lot of cops and other people think this way. I have seen Porsche's cut off constantly and such because of people out there who have different values.

If you own a Ferrari, you gotta realize you will get pulled over for things Suzie homemaker in a minivan never would be. Valentine 1 is a must. Half the time, they just want to see the car.

One time I was going east on rt 46, between the bridge (leads to the GWB) and Teterboro, I was only doing like 50 in a 35 (maybe a 40) and this cop was going the other way. He kept looking at my car and I was trying not to look at him (I never got my car inspected in the year and a half I had it on the road). Well needless to say as soon as he got behind me he started trying to U-turn with his lights on but he couldn't because of the traffic. So I dropped it into 2nd, stood on it the way through 3rd and into 4th. It was crystal clear so I could see way ahead and I had room to run. I just kept it floored til I got to the exit where I came in a bit hot, slid a little sideways but no where near out of control or anything. Stopped at the stop sign, made a nonchalant right and drove down a few blocks obeying the speed limit (now in town) and pulled into my grandfather's driveway. Covered up the 308, went inside and ate dinner. I stayed at his house for like 3 hours before I finally figured it was time to go home.

You can't really drive fast in the Ferrari. You get stopped most if not all of the time. We went to Daytona in 89 from San Francisco (3500 miles) 45 hours non-stop, except for gas, etc. in a 89 Dodge Van (383, 4 barrel, exhaust, and a cam) 3 guys, 2 motorcycles.

If I tried that in the F-car, would still be in jail.

I just returned from a 6,000 mile round trip to Texas and back. While on the way down and 50 miles from San Antonio my destination, a DPS going the opposite way intant-oned me as I was doing 85mph (70 limit). He passed by and kept going so I thought "cool". As I watch in my side view, I saw him jack it across the median and start hauling ass towards me, SH-T! 50 miles to home with no tickets and now I am nailed. He came up to my left rear and I figured he was running my plates. He then came alongside me and had a big grin on his face and gave me a thumbs up, real cool! He passed me and stayed there for a while. Before approaching an exit, he started turning his right blinker off and on until the exit came up. I got off with him, he pulled over, and we both got out. He said he had never seen a Ferrari close up and appreciated me following him. We bullsh-ted for 30 minutes, took a few pictures and he gave me his card. He never mentioned my speed and neither did I of course.

On the way back and in the same state, I was hauling ass (120) about 100 miles east of El Paso. After a while, I pulled off to refuel. As I finished and was getting back into my car, a DPS pulled right up behind me, got out, and instructed me to get out. I did and asked what was up and he said that he had eight reports of me doing over 100. I asked him from whom? He said, You are never alone on the highway. Apparently, some of the people I passed got pissed and dialed 911. He was waiting to see if any would come to the county seat and fill out a complaint. While we waited, I popped the rear deck lid and we talked about the car for about 15 minutes. He finally was called and no one was willing to make a complaint. He told me to be cool until New Mexico and gave me his card and off I went.

As I getting home a few days later, with no tickets, I was entering McChord air force base to get groceries for my bare frig and as I went through an intersection (yellow light) and before the base gate, I got my picture taken running the light! Do you believe the luck? 6,000 miles and I get a ticket 3 miles from my house. I hope this did not bore you.

Yeah, i always try to pull that hiding stuff. The one time i didnt hide, i got a ticket. It was on a 2 lane road in greenwhich. I figured the cop wasnt going to turn around. But that was in CT and i have a NY license so i just payed it and that was the end. The only other ticket i got wasnt for doing anything wrong, i was buying beer at a citgo station 2 towns over and an undercover cop saw me do it. He took away all $60 worth of beer and gave me a ticket for 55 in a 45 and illegal lane change because he felt i should get something. I plan on going to court to fight these since i didnt break any traffic laws. One time i got pulled over in my town for doing 85 in a 35. Luckily i knew the cop. he was like this is a fast car huh timmy, i responded with no and he was like do you know how fast you were going, so i responded with 55, 60. He was like im giving you a warning and im telling your dad (hes the mayor of the town). Luckily im from a small town and i know all the cops and i worked with the judges son and know him, he cut me a break on a parking ticket i got for parking ilegally at school.

When I was starting to race, there was a game several of us racers would play on Friday nights. We would take our motorcycles into Berkeley, CA and see how many cops we could get to chase us. This went on for a couple of nights, and I finally got chicken and stopped.

There used to be a pedestrian overpass over highway 80 in Berkeley, Ca and when things got too hot we would use it to get away from the cops. After I had quit, my friend, Jerry Greene, used the overpass to attempt to escape, and guess what, 3 cops on the other side, and he got caught. In the early 70s, they didn't take you to jail for that : the Rodney King'd you. Thats what happened to Greene. Sure was glad I quit the day before.

Well I have a good one.

On the second day that I had my 348 I had a mustang tailgating me big time. I was curious to see what the car could do, so I got on it. After leaving him in the dust and passing alot of traffic, I opted to slow down. Just as I did, what do I see sitting in the middle of the freeway. A minibike cop, lol. I had already lifted on the gas but the speedo was showing 90mph. Great, I knew I was busted. But the cop was just staring and wasn't getting on the freeway. Then it dawned on me. He had to wait for all the traffic I just blew bye before he could get on. I down shifted and blasted to the off ramp. Got off and hid. After a lil bit I fugure is was ok. Wrong!!! Who do I see with the lights flashing but the same moped cop looking for me. He went one way so I went the other. Then BLAM!! what do I see another motorcycle cop sitting at the intersection, with his lights flashing and on the radio. Okay I'm thinking "jail". Since the car sits so low I figured I would take my chances. So I flipped an illegal u-turn, why not I was already shafted. Just as I did I see Ponch on another motorcycle hualling it the other way with the lights flashing. Three motorcycle cops looking for me, and I got away!!!! After sneeking home through every neighborhood in town, I parked the car for a week. Only pure luck got me out of that one. I sure did thank GOD that I didn't get busted either.

To this point I've only had good experience with cops, I hope it stays that way. I've never gotten pulled over in the jeep. Knock on wood. And only pulled over once in the town next to me in the Ferrari. He pretty much just wanted to check out the car and he said he was out looking for drunks (granted I wasn't swerving, excessively speeding, etc but whatever), it was like midnight. I wasn't drinking so he just took a look around, checked paperwork, and off I went. I think I was probably doing like ten over which he didn't even mention. Once I was at the town park in the Fcar with a girl just hanging out and one of the cops came down to just check it out, do his thing, whatever. He was cool too, just said don't stay there all night. Actually another young cop showed up and was drooling all over the Ferrari and I was talking to him for like ten minutes about it, the girl was starting to get kind of pissed though so we had to break up our impromptu car conversation.
It helps to have been on rescue for so long and for your dad's company to have built the police station I would say. If I ever got a ticket though I think my life would end.

Last summer I met a police car. I saw them turning 180 deg and started to follow me and finaly they stoped me. They checked my licence etc. and told me that a Ferrari has been reported stolen a couple of day ago and they just wanted to check if it was this car. I told them that I really appreciated that they stoped and checked me for that reason. They replied with a smile "Yes, thanks and when you are coming back we'll catch you with the laser gun..."

5-0 definitely loves to check out Ferraris...

When I picked up my T Cab, I was pulled over 30 mins after acquisition in Thousand Oaks, 1300 miles from it's new home in Seattle. I had trip passes for both Washington (3 days) and California (point-point). I saw him merging into traffic so I elected to sit back and wait for one of the rabbits that I usually chase to make a run up the left lane and have him swoop out and write a ticket. So, here we are cruising along at 60ish (traffic flow) and he starts to slow down and allow me to come up the center lane. Of course, as soon as I pass him, he swoops in behind me and proceeds to follow me at about 2 car lengths for 2 miles. Lovely...I know he is running the place. The plate you ask? Yes, the California DMV told me that I should leave the expired plate on the car while using the trip pass so as not to attract attention. I know this is going to get bad...

Well, soon enough, he turns on the lights and I pull over. He gets on the loudspeaker and says pull down an offramp. (Must be a CA thing...) Anyhow, he comes up and asks me for license, registration, proof of insurance and my story. Of course, I have license, only temporary registration info, no proof of insurance (I had actually called it in before taking off on the trip) and my story is that I just purchased and am driving it home, car is insured but paperwork is somewhere between insurance company and my house in Seattle and my registration paperwork will be completed in Washington state as allowed by law on inter-state transfers.

He goes back to his car, hangs out for a while and then comes back and says your plates are expired, your temp licenses don't matter and you need to have proof of insurance in California. I could have you towed... F#ck me...now I am pissed but thinking I should take a moment. I again explain all the above and point out it was his DMV that told me what to do and I'm sorry if I am not the registered owner of the car but perhaps the California DMV does not work at any sort of resonible speed etc. Then he goes back to his car...

Comes back and says, youo are free to go with the car, keep it reasonable. I will be sending the CA registered owner of the car a ticket for driving without a valid registration. What a swell guy...

End of story, previous owner gets ticket, takes in my temp tags and gets an apology from officer in court. Sometimes, these guys can't remember if they are to Serve and Protect or simply Taxation without Representation.

A warning means don't do it again. You pushed your luck too far that time.

I was coming to a green light that turns yellow, so I slowed down and made a right turn as the light turns yellow to red. The cop was sitting in the opposite direction from me at the left turn lane, followed me, pulled me over and gave me a run-a-redlight ticket. Big ticket in california.

So, I went to court, and asked the officer how it was he could have seen my light when he was facing the other direction. He could not answer it, the judge dropped the case.

Justice prevails. Fight everyone of your ticket and slow the system down to a crawl. It benefits all of us.

My story is how I ended up with two speeding tickets within 5 minutes of each other, within 1 mile of each other.

I was 18 or 19 coming home with friends from "October Fest" in a small town. October Fest was known for being one wild evening of under aged drinking. I was the designated driver that night in a car full of drunken friends. I was doing 62 in a 55 and got pulled over by a cop trailing me. I told him I was not drinking and knew he was just looking for drunk drivers. He agreed he was looking for drunk drivers and told me he would let me go with a warning, it was after all only 7 over.

I pulled out onto the road and he head off in the opposite direction. I hit the resume button on the cruse control (back to 62), it should be save now right. Just about as soon as I got up to speed a cop heading the other direction hits me. I give him the same "I'm a responsible designated driver not drunk driving" story; he says for 62 he will just give me a warning. Just then the guy on the other end of the radio says, "What did he do now? after the call in on my license. The cop asks me to explain, and I have to tell him less then 5 minutes ago I was pulled over for speeding. He then writes a ticket out for me (full 62 no deduction like they usually do), and then proceeds to call the last officer to come give me the ticket he let me go on!

When I was in high school I was cruising down the road probably 10-15 over the limit. This was Thanksgiving or Christmas morning, so there was no one on the road. Cop going the other direction nails me - he flashes his lights and points right at me. Lucky for me I knew the neighborhood I was passing and quickly ducked into an alley and made my escape.

A couple of years ago I was coming to work in a '88 Grand Am beater. The thing looked like a white trash car - fading paint, dented fender, fabric hanging down from the ceiling. Your basic GM job after a decade of driving. This cop follows me for a hundred feet or so and then flips his lights and siren on. Says he pulled me over since he thought my inspection and/or registration was out of date. Bullshit on that. Those stickers are tucked in the lower left of the windshield. You can't see them if you look through the back window let alone in another car. The dude just saw this beat up car and assumed I was too poor to keep it legal.

Only 2 tickets I've ever received were in Ferraris. ROLLING thru a stop sign in my 308GTS and speeding in a 550 Maranello. #%@!#$%!!!!!
STOPPED by the same cop too!

um....not to say I haven't talked my way out of a few tickets in my time - but this guy was jerk. YELLOW FERRARI HATER!!! As he's writing me a ticket for rolling thru the stop sign - a van just blows thru it......I was on a hill - car was cold.....we all know we have to coax it into gear sometimes........gravity let the car roll at 2mph!

The Maranello story - which by the way I have the ticket framed - was worth it (BIG GRIN)

Nika - behaving on the roads :-)

agree, my view if you drive without insurance it should be more than a slap on the wrist - take care of uninsured motorists and insurace fraud and I bet rates drop 30%

TomD we are a no-fault state too in FLA but that is exactly what sucks. You have to cover your vehicle full coverage if somebody runs into you and is not insured. Basically you give a free ride to all deadbeats that do not have insurance. Down here in Miami that is at least 80% in Hialeah and 95% in Overtown

Warren, why are you waiting for plates, can't you walk into the DMV and get them?

That is one cool Trooper!

...and heads up for having the courage to stop. Running is probably the dumbest thing people do.

Warran,
driving without tags is one thing, driving without insurance is insane. Not just for your loss but also if you hit somebody. You could lose the shirt you are wearing. It is so irresponsible and the authorties still treat it like a misdemeanor. I know people that had serious injury from uninsured motorists and serious financial damage. One lost his job after being rear ended on his motorcycle, one was out of work for one month (after 7 days in a coma) being hit on I95, both by uninsured drivers. They did not get a Dime and lost lots of money!

I had a 96 993 TT, and I was out taking a midnight cruse on the Highway in Indy. I was going really fast, and my radar detector went billistic. Sure enough state trouper had someone pulled over, well I could have out run the cop, but did not want to risk it. I was going over 140 mph, I knew that I was Fu*#ed. I pulled over and waited for the trouper, and right when I was about done waiting I see his lights. He pulles up behind me and gets out of his car and he is laughing, so now I really think I am Fu#%ed. I had my license and registration waiting for him, and he asked me" do you know how fast you were going" and I told him, I am not trying to be a smart ass but I was going 143. He started laughing again, and said I am not sure which is more stupid, going 143 on the high way, or pulling over and waiting. He said Don't do it again. I was feeling lucky so I said wait, or speed. He said do not push you luck, and by the way nice car. True story

Wow, that last story makes me glad that I got pulled over. Yeah, there was definitely just cause to pull me over, but I guess it's the attitude and attention that gets to me.

I got off scott free. I had a get out of jail free card.

Ill give you a good example of why you should have plates on it. Yesterday, I bought a lincoln towncar (used). I put a trip permit on it and called my insurance company just before I picked it up. I drove it less than 1km and a 17 year old girl made and illegal left turn in front of me. I wrote off both cars and she is in the hospital. If I had not plated it, I would be F'ed right now. You never know who will run into you 10 seconds down the road. She was charged.

No plates on any expensive or even cheap car will attract police attention. Did het let you slide with a warning or did you get a ticket?

Warren

I have to say getting pulled over because you did not have plates is probably a good thing, just imagine if you car was stolen from you. I don't think you can blame the police, though he did not need to give you attitude after you identified yourself

The third day after getting my Esprit I was stopped for no apparent reason. Now, I'm young too but the officer was actually very professional, but he did fess up that the only reason he pulled me over was that he wanted to look and to check on my temp tags. He asked a few questions about the car then cut me loose without even asking for license, registration, and insurance card.

I knew driving a Ferrari was going to attract attention, but sometimes it's attention you don't want. I drove my car 20 seconds out of my house and I was pulled over, granted I didn't have plates on the car yet but I explained that they were coming and that I just got the car and couldn't wait. The officers immediately began questioning me: "Who's car is this? Where do you live? Do you know how much trouble you could be in right now or your parents for that matter?" Of course they immediately assumed that I didn't buy the car and that it belonged to my parents... which is completely 100% untrue. But... I guess this is somewhat reasonable. Just know when you are driving a car like a Ferrari you are constantly be watched and judged. Kinda sucks.

So do you guys have any good Police stories? Need to vent.
