OK, so two issues. First, I have the "shims"--two round, washer like discs that are, say, 1 or 2mm thick. Are these what we're talking about? If I have these, then could I pop open the caliper, put them in, and voila?

Or no?

Also, many have vaguely stated that the rears are the same. Do we know for sure about the fronts?

Don't think you'll save much $ or effort going with the 914 ATE caliper as others have reported that the spacer between the two caliper halves is a different thickness than the 308 (so you'd still have to disassemble/reassemble even a new 914 ATE unit):

(I know I'm getting lazy, but I'd go the "WhitePost" {or similar} route.)

I had heard the calipers were the same as some Porsche OE. Does anyone know the part interchange or part number. Porsche 914 sticks in my mind as the proper one if I remember correctly. Surely someone out there knows the part #.

Aren't the 308 calipers the same as those on some Alfa's or Fiats? I thinkk I remember hearing this when I had a 308. May be cheaper to buy an "Alfa" part.

I've posted in other threads here about my broken-off bleeder screw in my caliper.

Everybody wants to rebuild these things and sell them to you for $300 to $600 with a core exchange. I'm not sure anybody would accept my caliper as a core exchange at this point--the screw is not coming out. Still investigating EDM (Electron Discharge Method?) to get it out, not 100% positive I'm going down that route, though. (Front right caliper.)

What if I just wanted a new caliper?

I recognize I'd probably have to get two. Brembo sells an upgrade kit for $2600, but only the fronts. Too much for now.

Just as an option, ferrarispares.com offers:

Left and Right Front Brake Caliper (recon ex) 375.00
Left and Right Front Brake Caliper Recon (outright) 1250.00

Basically, they want $2k for a set of new calipers. I'm assuming that they're new.

Anybody know where to just buy one or two new calipers? New old stock (NOS), salvage, or just new ATE calipers that would work? NOS Porsche 914 calipers? Aftermarket upgrade?

Another perspective is, I could probably do the Brembo upgrade and recover some of my cost by selling the left front caliper and rotors...

Would appreciate your feedback. It's 70 degrees and clearer than I ever though possible here in ABQ. And I'm driving the SAAB :-(.
