I heard that the wheelbase is 27" longer, also the new 460 should be 600 pounds less because of losing the fiber glass...

Jim, I received my copy of R&T today and I disagree with you on this one. I think the Automobile version looked way better than this R&T one:

Why is everyone so upset about them using a variation of the Enzo engine? in the Sixties all Ferraris used variations of the 250 engine. GTO owners didn't seem to complain that the Lusso had a variation of 'their' engine. Today the Maserati uses a variation of the 360 engine.

If the stories about the 460 are true it will give the 4 seater a great boost. At last Ferrari seems to have tired of their 4 seaters being unloved in the marketplace. Putting some real hair on their chests will resuscitate the market segment and provide a superior owner experience. I think it's a good move.

There is a photoshop guess in the new Road&Track which IMHO looks better.

Jamil,

If the Enzo were a regular production model, I'd agree, it's a stupid move. HOWEVER, as far as I know, all Enzos have been sold. All 399 have owners and no more Enzos will be built after that. So, it should have no effect if the Enzo engine goes into a 460. In fact, it might even boost 460 sales if a potential owner knows they could have the "Enzo" engine.

I'd rather have the Enzo! But if I had an Enzo I'd be ticked that they put "my" engine (even in a de-tuned version) in a "less expensive" car!

The wheels are just 575M wheels, I believe. The car looks great... no unnecessary gimmicks or other addons to attract attention, just a good old classic and clean design from Ferrari... again...

I like the look of this way better than the 456. But why would Ferrari put the Enzo V12 into this car.

I realize it saves money for engine R&D, but isn't Ferrari shooting themselves in the foot by doing this?

This naturally shows Ferrari's design thinking into the 2004 model year. I love the look, especially the agressive wheels! This makes all the upcoming models really interesting and something to look foreward to. It however does not tarnish the existing cars. What a delicate balance to push design while still preserving the existing models!!

If it's an edit, it fooled me. (look at the full-res scan that Jason posted, reflections continue into the headlight covers, colour looks correct, and the car is obviously facing a building or some obstruction which blocks reflected light on the front of the vehicle.

I don't think it's a fake, and I think it looks pretty darn good! (but too 'new/chic' for me, I like the 456 much better. The 456 is for me easially one of the most beautiful and timeless ferraris ever built, destined to be a cult classic (as Dave said, the ultimate 12cyl F-car bargin.)

Keep 'em coming down, I can hardly wait!
Best!
Ben.

When I first saw the photo in Automobile, I thought it was a Photo Shop.
The headlights especially the left side and reflections look painted.
But, I hope it is accurate.

THe color differences from front to rear, the odd stretch angles on the front valence, and the distorted light shadowing on the hood (not to mention the dis-continuous lines), imo, suggest this is a photochop.

It looks too brutal for a 456M replacement IMO. And why the german license plate? Are they testing it on the Ring ?

Prices of 456s will tank even more when its successor comes out, IMO. They will become the Great COntemporary Ferrari Bargain.

Also, I still thing this Photoshop image is a collage of 456 & 550/575 successors.

That looks nothing like that spy photos at all..The red car is out of this world...

If this is a true rendition of the new 460 I love it..
Can't wait to see it on the road and I can't wait to see what this will do to the prices of the 456.

Now this is more along the lines of what I would expect the replacement of the 456 to look like. Those pics of the test mule were so ugly there was just no way that could have been the work of Pininfarina. This looks a lot more like the M, but with the front end cleaned up. Clearly an evolution of the current model.

Oh, I can't wait.

If it's the real thing, I like it. A mix of the 456 (side details) with 575 (bumper and hood scoop)and 360 (headlights and rounded hood corners). Very aggressive looking. Any ideas on performance figures?

Here is a clearer scan of the photo:

Upload

The article, "40 Cars Worth Waiting For," contains mostly unenhanced photos and artists' renderings. The only photo that appears to have been retouched is one of the upcoming Porsche 997 and it is decribed as such. I'm not sure if there has been any "retouching" done to this 460 photo though.

At first it looks an awful lot like a 575 replacement but, upon closer examination, the rear seats are visible though the windshield and the rear quarter window/roofline is much less tapered than the 575 and more like that of the 456.

brian, you can seat 5 in a pinch in the 456m. i looked into getting a little leather 'plug' for the cubby hole in the middle and attaching a lap belt at the connection points for the 2 other seat belt 'female' ends. all possible (bespoke of course), and would be enough room for my youngest child to sit safely (at least until he gets older than 6). there might be a similar fix possible on this one.

Ahhh, now that looks more like it!
That black thing was hideous looking.

If only it would seat 5 *or* come in a soft top, then it could fit one of our car slots.

It's the picture from p.50 in Automobile mag for the 460GT. I'm not a good judge of photoshop pics, but it does look like an undoctored photo to me. (don't hold me to that though :-) )

Just a quote,

The replacement for the long serving Ferrari 456GT large "Grand Tourer", Ferrari codename F137, is expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. Continuing the two door, four seat, front engine theme of the original car, which made its debut way back in 1992, the new model is expected to be larger and roomier.
Expected to be know as the 460GT or possibly 460 Bologna, it will use the 6.0 litre V12 engine first seen in the Enzo, but will have available around 500-550bhp ( and 600Nm ). Raising the power stakes has been nessecary in light of the advances made with the rivalling Bentley Continental R. The four seater will be available with two transmissions, a manual 6-speed box or the new 'F1-style' version. It will be 4850mm long and 2000mm wide.

Particular attention has been paid to road handling, one of the 456GT's acknowledged weak points. The engine has been clearly set further back involving the A-pillar being moved rearwards significantly. Ferrari engineers hope that this will create near even weight distribution between front and rear wheels. The steel chassis of the 456GT has been dispensed with in favour of an aluminium honeycomb chassis, as used on the 360 Modena/Spider.

Pricing is expected to be over 200,000. Ferrari are remaining tight lipped however on whether the model will receive four wheel drive.

The 460 is a 4 seater, yes?
I saw the Automoble picture also and I like it.

There is a lovely 1999 456 in Los Gatos. Too bad for me, the monthly payment is out of my reach.

I saw that as well. But you know what? My money is on that computer generated image being closer to the 550/575 replacement than the 456 replacement. Just look at the lineage---it looks a lot more like the Maranello successor than the 456 successor!

I don't know if we should believe Automoble magazine but page 50 of the new May issue shows a beatiful real picture of the new 460 and says it will get a modified version of the Enzo V12 (575HP)and F1 txmission. Is that cool transportation for 4 people or what ?
