Isopropyl alcohol in the gas tank worked great for me!

Let me know if you want info on it....I'll show you the difference in smog numbers...

Peter, it sounds like if the dealer is willing to work with you, you will be fine. Make sure they are good on their word... Matt is right about requiring smog when the car changes hands... To Brent's point, I recently had a car brought into CA, which required CA Smog... working with the DMV, they were fairly lenient to offer an extension for me to pay my fees and have my car smogged within 30 days later.

Good luck.

Peter, I had a similar problem while my car was getting the engine rebuilt and it was out of the car. Everyone is right you do need to get it smogged. However, you can buy yourself a little more time. I went to my AAA office (AAA member) and explained the motor was out and was taking longer to get done. They gave me an additional 30 days. The car even took longer to get done and they gave me 2 additional extentions. They seemed a little easier and nicer to deal with than the DMV.

Good Luck

Don't try the historical plate, I did, and failed. You must pass smog, and it is illegal to sell a car without giving a smog certificate. You have ground to void the transaction.

You are screwed.

The dealer lied to you. Being in california, any car that changes hands MUST be smogged if it was built after 1973.

You have 30 days from now to..

get the engine in the car.

get it smogged.

If it's "test only"..... Grap your ankles.

One possible solution might be to register your car as a historical car.

if it's not possible, e-mail me. I might have a solution for you.

No cats on a '77, but '77s do have the thermal reactor muffler (so you might not want to give it away) and air injection.

I purchased my '77 308 two months ago and the dealer thought it did not need a smog. In expediting where my title was, the dealer stated they needed a smog! With the engine now out, it will be a few weeks before I can sniff the pipe for a pass. I bought the car without cats. The dealer stated they would do EVERYTHING to make sure it passes.

Just seeing if anyone out there may have a comment on possible probolems I may run in to.
