Hi again Sergio -- I forgot to mention this. I too had the luggage issue to contend with, because my girlfriend did a TON of shopping in Munich (!!!) so didn't have space for all this material. When the Ruschenberg people delivered the car to me in Munich, I gave them my extra luggage, and they stored it in their truck. Then, when they came to pickup the car from me 16 days later, they brought my bags back again. It all worked out really well. Hope this helps, and make sure you report back to us about your trip (with pics of course!!) |

Jay: Thanks again for your valuable information and I will follow your advice. Why risk my own car when I can get the same for what it will cost more or less shipping and handling, meanwhile mine will be safe and sound at home. The only issue is that since I will be traveling with my wife and our plan with the F-car is to be on the road for about 10 days we need an in and out point into where to live the luggage and just carry whatever fits into the small trunk of the 360 hoping it does not have a spare tire but the can.our idea is to start a Munich hit the road,go thru the alps ( as you said )Austria,Italy,Switzerland and then back to Munich. If not a personal question, how did you managed the luggage issue? Sergio, et.al.: Yes, that is who I rented from, the Scuderia Ruschenberg. I rented the 360 Modena 6 speed (I prefer the 6 speed over the F1). I rented for 16 days, and had 3,200 free kilometers to play with, and I used every last one of them! ...they go fast when you spend a few hours per day on the Autobahn at 160 mph! :-) In addition to the 200 free kilometers per day, the rental included full coverage insurance for me as well as a driving partner (comprehensive and liability). You can sign up a second driver if you would like, for no additional charge. Their weekly rate on the 360 Modena is about $5,000. However, when I rented, I was able to leverage a little discount due to having the car for multiple weeks. I think I paid something like $8,900. The car that I drove was brand new -- it has 3,200 kilometers on the clock when I got it. It performend flawlessly, and I had absolutely the best driving experience of my life. I can't say enough about what it is like to drive this car fast on the Germanh Autobahn, Italian Autostrada, and the Alps. Take your best Ferrari dream, multiply it by 10, and then you get the idea.... I am planning this year's trip and so happen to know that last year they did acquire a 360 Coupe with F1 tranny. It is the 360 Hamman, so it also has aftermarket exhaust, racing seats, and some aero package. I believe it rents for slightly more than the standard 360 Coupe for this reason. I was thinking about trying it this year, but the racing seats hurt my back (and I still prefer 6 speed over F1), so I'll probably stick with the 360 6 speed again this year. (Although it would be tempting to try the 575M for a day!!) Anyway, hope this info helps. I found their service to be of excellent quality. Nice guys, true Ferrari lovers through and through, with some super nice cars. Incidentally, I also rented their F40 for the last day of my trip last year. It was amazing! |

Jay: Can you please give me some information on your renting experience like:what kind of car, with what company, for how long and if possible the weekly rate? The search I've done for a 360 Modena shows only one posibility at this time, this is: Scuderia Von Ruschenberg and they don't seem to have this model with F1,just the Spider. Thanks Sergio |

I worked the numbers for shipping my car over there a few years ago. I found the breakeven point for the "rental vs. shipment" issue to be about 3 weeks. Unless you have your car over there for more than three weeks, it's still less expensive (and certainly less risky) to just rent. But if you plan on being there longer, you'll cover your shipping and insurance fees. But a buddy who shipped had his upholstery and carpet ripped up by the DEA agents upon re-entering the states, and that's hard to factor into the equation!! I rented, and found it to be great, simply because it's not my car, so I can drive worry-free and enjoy the experience without stress! |

Quite right Jason, he was always helpful to me and always polite. That there are not many like him anymore is so true but I won't get started on that subject here - it's a whole big can of worms for me! |

Jason, sadly Peter Rattigan at FCI Insurance in the UK passed away suddenly last year. I insured my 360 with him as well and he was indeed a gentleman. The contact person is now Stuart Horne. |

You may want to shoot an e-mail off to the guys who run www.c5registry.com . For a number of years they had led a group of Corvette fans (with their cars of course) to Le Mans for the race and to drive around Europe for a bit. They have done it a number of times with great success. They may be able to hook you up with some contacts for insurance, shipping, etc. Just an idea Oh by the way, have fun! I'm going to have to do this sometime Patrick |

Sergio, I've done the other way with my car....UK to California, and I also shipped a Benz...Mass to UK. Your Marine insurance is a little high, should be able to get it at @ 1.25%. You can cut the container cost by shipping with another vehicle (eg 1*40FT container which will take two vehicles)...This can significantly reduce your cost. FYI it cost me @$2000 for my own 20ft container UK to LA. I didn't have the customs issue you discussed either coming from or going to the US. If you have a good broker they should be able to pre-clear the departure of the vehicle (it's all about good paperwork, clear title etc.) I went to the bonded wherehouse and drove the vehicle right into the container. It was then anchored, closed and customs sealed in front of me. When I shipped from the UK to US, it took 3 days for my car to clear customs and be available. Again this was at a bonded wherehouse not at port (you don't want the car sitting at port). Shipping time, UK to California was 25 days....East Coast to UK was @ 18 days. You need to negotiate hard with these people, they do have fat in their rates, and I would have thought that you should be able to get a deal on a 'roundtrip' transport. |

Nick,By the way I forgot to mention that there is a transit time of two to three weeks and another week to ten days before shipment to load and clear US customs. This means about a month the car seating in port and probably the same thing when shipping it back. Please if anyone has done it before your input would be greatly appreciated. |

Nick,I've been doing some investigation too on the last few weeks since I also want to ship my F-car (360F1) to Europe for a 45 days vacation and as posted about a year ago is probably cheaper to rent an F-car than risking your own.Since I want to ship the car from Miami I contacted a shipping company in Florida and the Numbers are more or less for a one way as follows:Closed container $2.300.00 Marine Insurance 1.75% of value of shippment +/- $2.650.00 plus what ever the insurance additional cost for Europe (as Sunny mentioned it could be around $1.000.00),therefore a round trip could probably mean around $12.000.00 plus this fact and this is just my personal feeling)How safe would it be nowdays driving an F-car in Europe with American plates? But again this is why it should go insured. Please tell me if you have a better deal and with who? |

Nick, a friend of mine is shipping his XK120 from California insured overseas to Amsterdam and then driving to Germany for a couple week long rally in the Alps a month or two from now. He's going through an International carrier based here in the US and has a screaming deal. He worked out insuring his 2 modern Jags, and all 4 classic Jags throught the same company. Insuring the other cars through them was a courtesy he paid back to them rather then required to seal the deal. I will call him tomorrow in the afternoon, get you a number and a point of contact. I think its going to be $1000 and change for insurance overseas, while driving there, and for the return trip. As far as driving in the UK and in Germany, you can temporarily drive on your stateside license but I can't remember exactly how long. And you better get the English-to-whatever translation handbook for the road signs. The UK has a brutal system with over 100 different ones you're required to memorize to drive there... |

Nick try, FCI Insurance (LLoyds of London Agent) Tel +44 (208) 532 9637 Fax +44 (208) 8532 9638 Person to speak with Peter Ratigan They used to insure my 360 in the UK....Peter is a real gentleman (they offer limited mileage policies, and can extend cover thru Europe for a limited time) When you say license, I presume you mean driving license...just get an international one...these can normally be obtained from an automobile association like the AA (do they have the AA in HK?) If none of this works, I can put you in touch with someone that used to run Italian Motors in HK (he now has a dealership in the UK)...he would probably be able to help. |
