Sorry Jim, I certainly didn't mean to disagree with what you said about the V-12 Dino. Just was posting what thought was an added tid-bit - that the engine was put in for testing/development purposes and not racing purposes. I'm a huge Dino fan and don't doubt for a second that they played a huge roll in the history of Ferrari. |

Sorry Jim, I did realise that you were talking about a mid-engined and much younger car, but got stuck on the Dino reference ... hyjacked your thread ... whoops I also did not know that Ferrari had ever stuck a v12 in a mid-engined Dino ... interesting that it fitted in both cars. Yep bad crash from the photos I saw, I hope he has recovered okay ... and ready to demonstrate that car again Pete |

Pete That was some scary crash! He wasn't even wearing seatbelts as they weren't "Period correct". The sight of him flying through the air is not something one soon forgets. When the judges look askanse at the belts in my Deusenberg I just smile. As you probably realize I was refering to "sports Ferrari's" ie. sports cars. This thread began on the 512BB thread where someone asked what was the first "midengined V12 sport Ferrari as opposed to a front engined one." I thought that the fact that it was a Dino and that Ferrari was the one who built it was interesting so I started a new thread. Best Jim |

Jim, My understanding is that Ferrari did this first for the Tasman series (3 litre limit (I think) and run in Australia and New Zealand during the off season of F1) to a Dino F1 front engined race car. This series used to be a big deal and most teams came down and how many really interesting cars ended up in NZ and Australia. In fact a Dino (F1 front engined race car) with a 3 litre engine was sold to a guy in the south island of New Zealand and this car is the car that Nigel Corner crashed in a big way at Goodwood (I think) and put himself in hospital ... car is being restored or has been. This car became the famous Morrori (not sure of spelling) as an owner put a Morris Minor body on this single seater so he could race in a saloon car series. This car even still had the wire wheels and single seat and everything ... and was road registered as a tractor (you could just about register anything in NZ as a farm implement back then ... er, and maybe you still can ) Luckily the body was kept and somebody returned it to its former glory and it made its way to England (Nigel could have restored it ... not sure). Thus yep, definitely factory V12 Dinos before the 246SP that John tested ... just forgot about this one. Pete ps: They also made a special Formula 2 car for Chris Amon which he won the series in a few years later. |

Rich, Jim G. is right, opinions don't derogate fact, and the plain fact is that a 246SP, equipped with a V-12, was the first V-12 mid-mounted Ferrari, or Dino. Either way, calling it more of a prototype and therefore saying Jim is wrong is a bit silly, no? |

Rich You,Frank, and Doug can dance on the head of as many pins as you want and proffer as many OPIONIONS as you want but the the Fact remains: Ferrari put a V12 into Dino 246SP 0796 and John Surtees drove it around Monza under the employ of Ferrari. (Period) |

It's obvious to me that when raced in the late 50s and 60s, including Hill's championship in '61 with von Trips 2nd (posthumous, unfortunately), the "dinos" were of course considered Ferraris! But, to be accurate about the V12 issue, Doug Nye wrote that the car Surtees drove was chasis 246/SP/62 0796 (the chasis Rodriguez and Rodriguez had driven at le mans in '62 but retired while leading at the 12 hour mark). The chais was fitted with the 250 testa rossa v12 when Surtees drove it first but this was more of a design experiment as a prototype for the 250P. I mean, it wasn't like it was raced as a "dino". |

HaHaHa...... I never have understood the nit-picking (and have never understood what diffence it makes anyway) between OnlyV12sR-RealFerraiologists vs AreDinosFerraris-ologists.

At the end of 62 a 12 was stuffed into a 246SP for testing at Monza. This was John Surtees first drive in a sports Ferrari. He broke the lap record which had been held by Ginther. (page 142 Ferrari Fitzgerald/Merritt) THIS PROVES THERE WERE V-12 DINOS MADE BY FERRARI!!!!!!! |
