James, if you can get a copy of Cavallino #52 (Aug/Sept '89), there's an article on how David Clarke modified his 365 P2/3 for road use. He noted the problems associated with a frame mounted alternator (even though the engine was mounted solidly to the frame, there was still some flex between the two to make the belt skip) and had it installed on the engine... No problems afterwards. |

James Is the hole in the centre bulkhead bodywork below the cooling vent for the Alternator (2nd picture down) for the Oil tank filler? |

James/Pete The large tube at the bottom of the fifth photo from the bottom with the cleaned up end is the fuel balancing tube. Note how the chassis tubes are welded directly into it! Best Jim |

Wayne The welds are really very interesting. You can see the cars history in them. The damage and repair where Vacerrella hit the curb and broke the cornor at the Targa Floria is clearly visible and it matches pics and discriptions of that accident. The final weld we're working on is where about 9 chassis tubes intersect, one of which flows water. Piper had fixed a leak with epxoy and we're tring to repair it properly. As we have it completly apart we can get to it. Best Jim |

PSK - One minor observation - the early Testarossas (1986) had a very similar (plastic) air-scoop "thingy" for cooling the altenator. I suspect many cars had a similar system. Jim S. |

Somehow I overlooked this thread. Jim, great pics. Keep them coming. BTW, those look like post-Y2K welds to me. Just kidding! I appreciate your point. |

Jim, Classic Cars Text by: Roger Hicks (not that there is much ) Published: 1987 Colour Library Books Ltd., Guildford, Surrey, England. Again just a coffee table book, and I am sure you have much more detailed P4 books ... but I love this photo ... awesomely complicated Pete |

Pete From photos I've found the inside of the body is flat black as well. My alternator is not yet adjusted so it may very well line up like that. Could you please list exact name, author, publisher of your book as I'd love to try and get a copy. Best Jim |

Jim, In a book I have (Classic Cars by Roger Hicks ... purely a coffee table picture book) there is some photos of Pipers P3/4 (?) spider and a wonderfully complicated picture of the engine. This shows the flat black chassis as you say and also aluminum finish for the panel in front of the engine ... this makes me wonder if the inside of the body is unpainted ??? Here is the picture taken via my camera (unfortunately not a very good picture ...):
It is interesting noticing the little details like the air scoop thingy for the alternator ... and how your adjustment is slighly different than Pipers ... but all these cars would have little differences as they were/are hand made and race cars. How a concours judge could ever possibly judge one of these cars I do not know ... impossible, would have to be an ex team mechanic an the car would have to be left with him for a couple of days to get the feeling of it ... Again keep up the fantastic work. Pete |

Pete The chassis will be flat/semigloss black. The underside of body black. For some reason the P4 timing cover and water pump in mag always leaked and were porus. 450HP at 8500rpm. The sound of this engine at speed is not something you'll soon forget. Best Jim |

Jim, What colour will the chassis be painted?, black or grey. I assume that the inside of the aluminium body will be painted grey?, is that how Ferrari painted their cars, I thought so but not sure. My understanding is that they are red on the outside only and maybe even unpainted alloy on the inside. I guess you have that all sorted but just curious. As for the magnesium comment Alfa GTAs had mag camshaft covers and other things and those things are still racing ... thus never heard of magnesium failing on unstressed parts so quickly before. Even the T33 sportscars use a lot of magnesium and are still running with it ... I believe, or so it looks anyway. Again all the little details take time, but it is definitely getting closer. Have you obtained HP and torque figures for the engine yet ... maybe a sound file could be posted, definitely make my day to hear her screaming on the dyno Pete |

Tim I'm storing the original Mag uprights and wheels. Ferrari SPA. recast new P4 uprights for me in alum. and the original wheel caster Campanelllo recast 2 sets of alum.wheels for me from the original wheel molds as well. I've also stored the original dual point ign, system (Remember this engine has 24 plugs) and have fit the electronic system Bob Wallace adapted for the 512BBLM. I'm also using alum timing cover and waterpump that Piper cast as mag ones only lasted about 24 hours. Best Jim |

Much of the new stuff has to do with fitting the NOS alum body. Over the years a few pieces had been lost. (BTW this happens to many comp cars). Some pieces such as the passenger dead pedal are of course additions. As this car had been raced, crashed, and rebuilt continueosly from 1966 through 2000 it was a little tired. Best Jim |

Wsa the car in rough shape before starting the resto? It seems as if alot of new stuff was being made for it. how much of it is the actual material that left the ferrari factory? |

Getting closer. Passenger dead pedal. Alternator cover. Note how it is formed to mate with inlet on left roof pillar scoop. Rear rain lip. Keeps water off of front of engine. Remember these were raced in the rain. Battery. Original chassis welds. (This one's for Wayne. These were done in the 60ies not later) Best Jim
