i saw and sat in the car at harley cluxton's shop in scottsdale in the august of 1997. he had just sprung it lose a short time before and had the car for sale. it looked quite different in its can-am guise but still a beautiful car. |

Pete/Arlie These cars were raced on the streets of LeMans and the Targo Floria and they never sat this low. I think the problem is that the nose is wrong. The line of the bottom of the nose inlet is way too curved downwards. Compare it with the opening on my car. The center upper inlet duct is correct P3. The P4 nose has 2 upper inlet ducts which flank the larger side inlet ducts. I bet it was damaged and repaired poorly. They were all a bit different so it's possible its right and the set up is way off. I raced against this car in it's Can Am form at Goodwood in 98. It was driven by Coco Chinetti. It had a beautiful sound but was pretty tatty by that time. Even though they fit the new coupe body I'm not sure they ever set it up properly as even though it got big $ at the Christies auction the test I read about it after the auction made me feel it needed work and I believe they embarked on a full restoration including the engine. This is from an article in a UK mag where the car now lives. Once they finish it will be very special. Best Jim |

Jim, Maybe it has not been setup for track use yet and just doing some Concours time. I imagine (even with your car) that there will be many months of ironing out the little problems and setting ride height, spring rates, tyre pressures, brake balance and gear ratios, etc. before they will fly again. If you actually tried to drive that car on the street, the lower section of the nose would be ripped off on the first section of curb or speedbump that you tried to cross. Take a look at any 1980 through 1982 Corvette and see how many of those still have the front lower air dam still attached. Most were ripped off in the first few months.

William Where did you see this car? In the photo below of the nose the ride height is way too low. Remember these cars raced it the sixties with high profile tires. The proper ride height should be 5 1/2 in. Best Jim |

Many Ferrari comp cars evolved, crashed, were repaired, modified, and converted over time. They were raced as spyders in some races and coupes in others. There is rarely only one RIGHT version so people choose the version that does it for them. Best Jim |

WOW.. thanxs sir(s) ... it was my first P3/P4 i had ever seen in person... it was alot smaller than i imagined... the photos i had seen prior seemed to make it look gigantic (wide angle lenses no doubt...) a closeup rear view of the passenger-side tail-lamps looking forward up the side of the car is the subject of a painting-in-progress. Those parallel vents and that rear spoiler are GORGEOUS. Thanks again...this helps alot..I'd like to be somewhat informed of the basics of the painting's subject if ever asked... one question: (forgive my ignorance of the subject of Ferrari restoration here...) if the car was originally a spider why would someone in 1998 spend the meg-bucks restoring to a form it never was - a berlinetta? Personally, i would want it to look as it did when it left the factory or in the form when it (famously) raced? Or is that what "converted by NART to 412P" means? and David Piper restored to the Daytona '67 state? sorry for the rambling question...I hope that made sence.... Thank you DES... i DO have some detail shots at home... i'll locate them and scan tomorrow... stay tuned... GT |

i saw this car in 1997 with its can-am body still in place just before it went to symbolic for the redo. the car is unbelievably low to the ground and is very tight to sit in. |

Photos taken at the Cavallino Classic 2000... I THINK its a P3... but if anyone can clarify/correct this i would appreciate it.. also if anyone can add any historical anecdotes... racing history... drivers... relation to the P4 restoration our friend Mr Glickenhaus is undertaking (if my P3 designation is correct...)
Thanx GT |
