Bud, good luck with your choice. In my opinion, I would choose a 13 yr old car with 5K miles over a 15 yr old car with 17K miles. I am also assuming both vehicles are asthetically the same. FYI, I sold my TR when it was 11 yrs old and had 8,800 miles on it. Beautiful in every way; a 100 point Cavallino Concours car. I would go with the 1990 car. |

I would say the cars are equal in all ways except the 1990 has 12000 less miles. Are there any concerns about a car that is 13 years old with only 5,000 miles.I really appeciate everyones help. |

Bud -- Can we assume that they are both US versions if you're in the US (or market correct for wherever you are)? Do they both have 16" (and not 415mm) wheels? |

Sorry to get off the topic of the thread. ~8 Hours Labor in/out, a clutch kit can be (est.) $1500-$2800 OEM from Ferrari, depending on if you have a single or dual plate. This is an ENGINE IN (not out) service, the clutch plates (and flywheel) can be resurfaced for under $1k with fresh bearings, if you are handy enough I believe you can do the 8 hours in/out yourself. An 86 TR near me has what we believe to be the orginal clutch, my 90 has the original clutch, and has only had 1 major in it's life. -Ben |

That is a great sign, since it was replaced last week, its still fresh, and you dont have to worry how much the previous owner burnt it. I would have a mechanic friend look at the car. I was all set to buy a TR, but in my friend's opinion the car's mileage was more like 60k as opposed to the 20 on the OD. Since Ferrari Odometers are easy to tamper with, a knowlegable person can make the difference in buying a lower mileage and a higher mileage car, regardless of what is physically on the Odometer. Good Luck! TRs are my fav f-cars. |

Welcome to F-chat Bud!! This site will provide with a wealth of information about F-cars. There are many people on this site who own and race and daily drive their TRs. Good luck with the hunt!! |

Hello Bud...TRs are all over the map regarding prices. But REALLY nice ones still get pretty good money. If the '88.5 was the first TR with 5-lug wheels so that's considered a plus by many. The price difference you stated sounds about right considering the miles and model years. I agree totally with Omar about the records. Check 'em out carefully, and if possible call the shops that performed the services to verify. As a general rule, the newer the car the better as TRs were refined and improved over time. Look them over very carefully. Check for rust at the bottom of the doors, as they are made of steel (roof too) and the rest is aluminum. Probably okay but you never know till you look. Try and have an expert mechanic check out the car your interested in. Can you tell us more about them? |

Oh yea, when was the clutch replaced (if at all) on the 88.5? with 17, good chance it was replaced once...and that is ~7k you don't have to spend.

is the records on the 90 complete? When was the last 30k done? With a 13 year old car, 30 should have been done at least 2x, and 3x with the other. |

Which Ferrari to buy? Both are Red/Tan - One is 1988.5 w/17K miles. The other is 1990 w/5000 miles. Both have had 30,000 mile service complete. Is the 1990 worth $9,000 more than the 1988.5? Any information or suggestions would be appreciated. |
