ANDY, The plate holder I have consists of a black backing piece that the plate itself slides into from the top. The backing piece attaches to the car by the two upper holes (the narrow set) only. A chrome plated cast frame is then screwed onto the black backing piece with four finish screws, two one each end, NOT top and bottom. A nice quality piece. Not sure if it is OEM though.
Thanks, DJ

Here's the lame metal frame that came on my 308; the pic doesn't show how beat up it is, and it has really scratched the paint under the corners where it was slopped on there. I looked for a simple clear frame at Auto Zone, Advance, and Wal-Mart, but the holes are all in the wrong place! Thanks for the links to the nicer ones...

Also wanted to show off my new plate. I'm not much for "vanity" plates, but I was so thrilled with the car I felt an "homage" was in order.

Enzo, where ever you are, I know you didn't approve of the road cars, but it was still your vision that led to the one in my garage, and for that I'm very grateful!

DJ,

My late 77 308 came with a license plate frame that sounds like the one that originally was on your car. It was a simple brushed finished frame that had four studs at the outer corners of it. The width was just enough to fit a US plate in it. I don't know if it was originally meant for some kind of Euro plate or if it was for US version cars, but its simple, clean, and doesn't advertise for anybody. There were no holes drilled in the rear fascia to allow a US plate to be mounted - just the four holes that allowed this frame to "trap" the plate against the fascia. Hope this helps.

Eric-
I use the same frame bought from AutoSport and, I agree, it IS very well constructed....and, no, its not just Florida plates; I had to snip a bit off of my MD plate to get it to fit properly in the frame. Fortunately, we only have to apply stickers here every 2 years.

I installed a nickel-chromium electroplated Prestige License Plate Cover on my F-car (and the wife's minivan). Looks classy, and is of very heavy duty construction. The license plate is enclosed in a heavy steel frame with thick glass plate...all moisture proof sealed...includes quality mounting hardware with security type allen screws. Here's a link:

http://www.autosportcatalog.com/index.cfm?fa=p&pid=882

The only downside is that you have to unscrew the frame / glass cover to paste the new registration sticker on the license tag once a year (here in FL). Also, I had to snip about 1/8" off each top corner of the tag with scissors in order to make it fit in the frame (FL tags must be larger than the norm ?).

I bought my car from F or SFO and shipped it to FL. I like this plate for 2 reasons, 1: they are the only factory owned dealer - 2: Quality chrome plated 1/2" billet aluminum.

Todd - I think they are actually made by HiTech.

I made the plexiglass cover and fabricated a gasget so water / moister does not get in and "fog" the lens...

I had a simple black rounded frame on my 308QV at its first concours, and Ed Wettig, who was one of the judges, took off a partial point because it wasn't correct. It is "supposed" to be a simple black flat frame. The car did still win first in class.

I got the "right" one the next week from FaF (now Ferrari of Atlanta). Looks good, though not very much different than what I had.

This reminds me of this elderly couple I did some work for back in my college days who had an older mercedes 280sl in their driveway with a license frame that said "my other car is a Rolls Royce". When they opened their garage... it was!! lol

I bought mine from Hi-Tech Custom Concepts www.hitechcc.com 800.773.1188 or 914.668.5090...ask for Karl...FERRARI is engraved and the frame is very high quality, chrome plated 1/2" thick Billet Aluminum.

It was $86.95 with shipping...you won't be disappointed.

Cheers,

TTG

Right now I have a Ford Probe GT. When I get an F-car I want the frame to say "My Other Car's a Ford Probe" because I hate all those lame bumper stickers that say how great their other car is. If it's so great, why aren't you driving it?

I bought my license plate frame at the Reno Air Races a few years back. It says" Too close for missiles" on the top, and "Switching to guns" on the bottom. I saw a 308 with a frame that read
"I always wanted a pony!"

BTW, I pulled the plate off of my 308 and found four wide spaced attach holes for what I assume would be a European plate. There are also two closely spaced holes that the two top holes of my US plate holder utilizes. Is this common to all or just the early 308's?.

I gave one to a friend of mine (a man of the cloth ) for his 80 GTSi that says "Ride with me and learn to pray'.
I saw it on the back of a womans Honda originally which to me meant something entirely different as you may guess.
I have it on my 240 (another meaning) but will have to change it now to something original.

I wonder how long it would have taken him to notice.

With my 1976 North American version fiberglass GTB, I had no choice in this matter. There's a dedicated black metal frame for the plate which must be used to secure it to the recessed area in the panel.

Just curious, what kind of license plate frame do you have on your f-car? I'm looking for one for mine and would like to get a few ideas. Elegant? Humorous? Expressive? Ferrari-ish?

Thanks
