After reading this post I inspected my car and found some minor corrosion under the rear deck lid where the black painted part meets the body color part. I also noticed some on the painted surface of the rear deck lid grill. I have having it repaired as I type.

I've had some door sills made for me. the only thing I changed was were that dumb rubber strip goes I got rid of the indent(because of always reglueing it) And then I have it powder coated to match the car and also to last longer. Then I use some silicone and after that i get some of that clear see through tape about a 1/2" to cover over the screws so no water gets inside. If any one wants to buy some of these sills please let me know because I have have them made in a run. thanks

The frame is dipped into a "kataphorese-bath" in german. Maybe cataphorese in engish?. I can only write this out of the german 348 book.

Door sills are easy. I did it that proves everything.

I have no clue what a dremel is though. Will have to go to Home Depot and play dumb.

Martin.....

You wrote "According to my 348 book the whole frame has been dipped in rust proof. All these components can not rust at all. There was a whole deal about that in the book on how they prevent rusting."

Was this referred to as the frame being dipped in hot zinc to prevent rusting, or using galvanized steel??? If so, you still have to be carefull. This is the process they have been using on 911's for years but the cars can still rust. From what I have read (although I am not 100% sure about this) this process acts as a barrier to protect the metal. But the chemical on the metal can still deteriorate (it is the part that corrodes instead of the metal) and make the paint bubble. Perhaps somebody can provide more information on this as my knowledge is limited to what I have read in Excellence and 911 Porsche World magazines.

Chuck,

I used the Dremel with a sanding disk and tapered fine grit stone for the holes. Most of the rust was actually on the underside of the sill covers. Make sure that you dress-up the edges as well.

After I got the metal back to bare sheet metal, I taped, Used a black primer (2 coats) and Duplicolor black trim OEM paint. It is not glossy like the sill covers are but it is mostly under the rubber. I think it's a big improvement as well as important to control the corrosion.

It took about 1 1/2 hours each to do the complete job including polishing the sills.

I would recomment all 348 owners to take a few minutes to inspect for this. ....you know an ounce of prevention ...

Also as a note, the bodies of these cars were factory treated for corrosion, the details are on page "M8" of the workshop manual.

Larry,
Thanks for the sill removal/prep/painting tips, especially the dremel tool. What kind of paint did you use on the sill?

Two weeks ago I removed the door sills on my 91 348 to remove the corrosion around the screws. There are three sheet metal screws just under the rubber that hold the sills on.

I used a dremel tool (invaluable for vehicle stuff) to remove the cancer and taped, primed and repainted. Looks very good. I also cleaned the underside as well.

I did a thorough inspection for any signs of rust over the entire car and only found traces on some on the upholstery screws. Go figure? Anyway I treated those as well.

I also have a few small bubbles on my passenger side door sill, near the screws that are hidden underneath the main rubber door seal trim. You can't see them unless you push back on the rubber trim.
Martin - is removing the door sill relatively straightforward?

I got the door sills as well. I am taking them off in the next days (one is off already) and scrape them off and, sand them and re-paint them.

Does anybody know of aftermarket sills. Carbon Fiber or chrome?

That is the only corrosion I can find on my car.

According to my 348 book the whole frame has been dipped in rust proof. All these components can not rust at all. There was a whole deal about that in the book on how they prevent rusting. 308's and 328's I hear a lot on the doors, 348 I have not heared at all.

Deja Vu?, I swear I responded to this yesterday morning, as I'm very interested.

Since buying my 348 from Florida this spring, I've noticed a few faint bubbles under the paint in the door sills as well as the joint where the rear roof pillars meet the top of the outer fender.

Is this a major concern?? Thanks Mark

I was reading a report on supercars over the weekend comparing best used car buys. The Porsche 993 won based on the fact it is mechanically bullet proof.

The report, whilst very brief, pointed out that the 348 suffers from corrosion. This was news to me as I have never heared of this before and considering it was the next car I want to get I was a little concerned.

Has anyone experienced this problem with the 348 and if so in what areas. Maybe this is just a UK issue due to our climate !!.

Thanks
