Ken, The older 308's have an adjustment on the cable to allow an adjustable amount of slack in the cable. This adjusment insures a complete release of the clutch plate to prevent dragging causing premature wear. Matt |

What are you guys referring to when you say that you adjust the clutch? I have a 308QV with what appears to be a good clutch. Ken |

I put about 20k a year on the 308 so mine needs more adjustment then most. I follow the WSM to the mm. |

I cant believe that the majority of us are bad drivers and dont know how to drive a car with a clutch. I think JRV is correct and the material on the disc is softer and wears faster than others. As for some clutches that last longer, hmmmm, dont have an answer for that. |

I adjust my freepaly about every 6 months and so far my clutch as lasted 20+k miles. It is no different then any other part of the car. It still needs to be looked after Matt |

but tim that doesn't explain why some drive their other cars the same way as their ferrari and never have a problem. you can usually abuse the hell out of american performance cars which have huge torque compared to the ferrari. |

It all comes down to how you use it. I remember reading here about guys who get alot of miles out of clutches. My mom told me that when we had a manual transmission saab it needed a new clutch every 2 years because my dad is terrible at driving stick (which i believe because in italy it only took himm two weeks to waer one down to almost nothing, such that we had to ban from driving it so it would last for the rest of our vacation). Can anyone give some pointers on driving style to extend clutch life? (besides the no slipping the clutch on a redline launch) |

23K miles on a 308 clutch, and the freeplay has never needed to be adjusted. From what little you can see thru the inspection cover, seems to still be in great shape. |

I'm curious about this as well. What is the problem? When I was younger and much more stupid (hard to believe, I know), I used to abuse my Japanese cars daily with full on dump-clutch launches and much intentional slipping but still managed to put 80K-100K miles on each of them without ever replacing the clutch. My P-car currently has just below 60K miles with no clutch issues and, while I'm a wee bit smarter now, I don't baby it by any means. Why is there an issue with Ferrari's clutches? |

Believe it or not but the clutch in my 512TR can last 2 years or more, Longer than my transmission My mechanic was amazed when he looked at my clutch and saw it was in good shape after a whole season on the track. You want to see a clutch that dies quickly ? I think my Lambo Countach clutch lasted less than 2,000 miles in San Francisco with all those bloody hills everywhere. Why would any1 put a city in such a silly place ? |

Dr. I, I've seen quite a few Ferrari clutches go 30K miles, although many Porsche clutches do last 50K-70K miles. Could be the way the driver uses the clutch or could be the disc material....I've only seen a handfull of collasped Pressure Plates in 30+ yrs...it's far more often a worn out disc neccesitaing replacement. Which lends credence to excessive slipping by the driver and/or disc friction material to soft or not thick enough for longer life. |

My F355 got 32K miles and 14 track events before the dual mass flywheel let go. As long as I was in there, I changed the clutch disk (which still had 1/2 of its useful life left.) |

Thats something I always wondered as well, but what really makes me think is that there is not an aftermarket clutch that I am aware of that extends clutch life. (which I think is really werid) Is there one? If would prove a suitable alternative I think. |

so many people complain about Ferrari clutches. Why are they so short lived..Porsche make high performance cars, but their clutches don't come out every 10,000 miles or less. I have five Ferraris and you have guessed it, I have had to replace all their clutches, sometimes after 5,000 miles. I also own a Corvette (90 ZR) with more than 18,000 miles on it, and no sign of trouble with the clutch. I am not complaining, just wondered why Ferraris are so unique in needing frequent clutch replacements? |
