Markus, yes their are :-)

It's more severe because there's no speedlimit on the german autobahn, making it one of the most effecient highways in the world. So I think that the tickets are a lot higher because, when there are some limits on the highway (when the weather is bad as an example) they exeed it with a lot more kilometres per hour than you do in other countries. I don't know for sure, but I think that could be the reason.

'Oh, I think I got it now. Most are european drivers because the U.S. drivers would be in greater trouble if they got caught in the U.S. than the european drivers? Is that why there are no U.S. drivers?'

Well,I think it's mainly because Americans do not drive their sports cars..they collect them ;O)
You will find more used high mileage Ferraris in Europe as you can find used low mileage collectors Ferraris...different game in the US where the ratio of collector F to high mileage F is probably 1 to 20.
And with the exception of parts of the German Autobahn ,penalties for speeding are more severe than they are here in the US.

Of course there are quiet a few exceptions to the rule !!!
Amen,

They are staying at the Venetian until tomorrow...which was a smart move since they impounded 30+ cars...at least that's what I heard.

Most are European cars, many drivers do not even have US licenses.

No one knows the exact route, not even the drivers until they leave the point previous.

I do believe, Russ, that the Gumball 3000 is organised by Maximillion Cooper, a fellow operating out of the United Kingdom, not the US.

I saw pics from last years events and they have some very nice cars. Lambos, F cars(F-50!), Porsches, etc. Damn, those people are loaded with cash! I would never take my car to that event! I saw 2 years ago on Jack-ass, a guy crashed his F355 and just smiled. He probably just bought a new one when he got home. I wish I was filthy rich =(

Want to know where we are going and when?

If you want to check out the cars and stars on this years' Gumball 3000, this is where we'll be going. We won't give you exact details or checkpoints/events on route, not even the Gumballers get those before the day, but you can probably figure out some of the main routes we'll be on and when. See you on the highway.

Wednesday April 16th

Gumball 3000 registration from midday onwards, all the Gumballers will assemble at the Fairmont Hotel, Atop Nob Hill, San Francisco. This is when the cars get transformed from their civilian paint jobs, into their Gumball clothes.

Thursday April 17th

The best day to come as see the Gumballers and their flying machines, as the fully dressed Gumball cars and hopefully fully dressed Gumball stars prepare for a parade lap around San Francisco, under the watchful eye of Mayor Willy Brown at 7pm. Around 9pm the event officially begins.

Friday April 18th

Las Vegas, we'll be in Vegas from late morning onwards. Motocross superstar Cary Hart will be on hand to entertain and amaze the Gumballers. We'll be settling in for the day, building up to a concert, with very special guests, followed by a typically Gumball party!

Saturday April 19th

After leaving Vegas early, our ultimate destination for the day is Tuscon in the evening.

Sunday April 20th

After an earlier start leaving Tuscon, we'll be arriving in San Antonio for the festival that night.

Monday April 21st

Today's destination is New Orleans

Tuesday April 22nd

In the evening we will reach our ultimate destination Miami. The
end party extravaganza will go on all night as we reach the official end of the 2003 Gumball 3000 Rally.

Wednesday 23rd

Post event wind-down, but we'll all still be in town if you want to come and check out the wear and tear on the cars and the stars after one of the most event-filled weeks and 3000 miles of their lives.

From that site:

FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS FOR GUMBALL 3000
April 17, 2003 to April 22, 2003

Film stars, rock stars, sports stars and billionaires will converge at The Fairmont San Francisco from April 16 to April 17 to participate in the fifth annual Gumball 3000, recognized as 'the most glamorous rally ever staged', by NBC News.

Starting atop Nob Hill at The Fairmont San Francisco, the 200 drivers of Gumball 3000 will explore the streets of San Francisco, and then traverse the Golden Gate Bridge to travel six days and 3000 miles to the finish line in Miami.

Launched in Europe in 1999 by Maximillion Cooper, Gumball 3000 revives the thrills of the 1970s Cannonball Run movies in a rock 'n' roll fashion with parties each night at some of America's most famous landmarks. In May 2002, W Magazine described Gumball 3000 as 'an update of the Cannonball Run only with much more chic people.'

Starting at noon on April 16, a collection of rare Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens, Bentleys and other unique cars will be displayed on Mason Street in front of The Fairmont San Francisco. The rally will officially commence on April 17 at approximately 9:00 p.m. after the 200 cars, including a Porsche sponsored by Fairmont, parade through the streets of San Francisco, with Mayor Willie Brown leading the star-studded procession.

I was planning on finding out where they were starting and trying to check it out, but looks like I'll be driving down to LA on Thursday. Hopefully I'll see them on the 5 as they make their way to Vegas.

If anyone does catch up with them in SF, please be sure to take a camera - from what I hear it will be worth it!

Edit: Did a little digging on the web and found this - looks like the Fairmont is the starting point! For some reason I can't get the link to work. Go to fairmont.com, select "Hotels and Resorts" from the top menu, then choose SF, then click on "Special Events" from the left menu. It's the first event listed.
