Jason, It sounds to me like your fathers car is an isolated problem car. My 456 has 30K miles on it and has had no problems whatsoever. I am factory trained (on 456's) and worked for years on these cars and know of no such reliability problems? I have only known the 456M's to have sparkplug fouling and valve guide problems like the 355's

Martin,

AFAIK it was mainly the '95s that were very troublesome, further years were much better.

My father had a 95 (fall '94 production) and it literally became the car from hell. The problem wasn't so much about things not working properly but rather that they could never be fixed.

1) Cold start problem: Worsened with age, the car would always fumble 2-3 times before starting. Never found a fix.

2) Spark plug fouling: The car would go through a new set of plugs after each summer. Always started with a misfire/knocking and always turned out to be fouled plugs. No fix ever found.

3) In 2001 the heater box cracked during the first drive after winter storage and the engine lost all it's coolant. The engine nearly fried on my father; within seconds all the temp gauges pegged in the red. He had to pull over and get towed. Turned out to be a $10k repair (mainly part cost)

4) Fumes in the cabin: This was the big problem that ruined the enjoyment of the car. The car would build up an exhaust stench inside the car and driving it for any long duration would give you a headache. WWoCs and two private shops tore the car down and were never able to find the cause. I always suspected this problem was tied in with the cold start issue as it seemed the engine ran too rich. Being computer controlled engine management there wasn't anything to adjust and Ferrari never released any updates.

My father was thrilled to finally trade the car in last year.

I think it's well documented that the early 456s suffered horrible reliability. Ask a few Ferrari mechanics and they can tell you more. I believe there was also a discussion on here about it as well.

Great car, just try to buy later production years.

Found this one on ebay. Have no affiliation whatsoever and have no clue what condition it is in. Did you check it out yet?

I love the 456. I think it's the ultimate "family" car. Everyone and their mother has a 5 Series BMW. One day.

I am still looking for a pristine and well documented 456 for sale.

Please post or email [email protected] if you know of any on the market worth pursuing.

Thank you in advance,

Doug Hudson
