I usually don't like American cars much, but there is something about the Impala SS that just makes me want one. I have owned a 300E, 560SEL, XJ6, GMC Jimmy, several Toyotas and a Ferrari Testarossa. Now I have a 00 Toyota Sienna and a 96 993TT. I was looking for a sedan and noticed that of all the vehicles out there the Impala SS has kept it value better than any vehicle out there, including P-Cars, F-Cars or any other exotics. New they were about $26k and now for a low mileage one (under 20k) it will still cost you about $20k. I guess it's just curiosity as to why they hold their value so well. If I do decide to buy one, it will definitely be a 96 (last of the SS). When I bought my Testarossa, I got the 91 model, which was the last year before it changed to a 512TR. Also when I sold the Testarossa to get a Porsche i got a 993 because it was the last of the air cooled cars. I wish I got a 97 993TT, but it was a bit more, so I settled for a 96 993TT, with 10.5k miles.

"smaller version of the LT1" - could you be thinking of some other car? The Impala SS has the same 350CID small block as the Corvette and Camaro had. Iron heads instead of aluminum, maybe that's what you had in mind?

They are heavy, but nice. The engine is a smaller version of the LT1, but the buildup is the same. I sold one of my 396" LT4 motors to a guy who dropped it into an impy. I also sold the guy a ATI blower for the ride, but i'm unsure if he ever used it.

Nice cars, hold value. HPs hate them for patrol, thats why most switched to crown vics.

If you buy one, make sure you mod the crap out of it ;)

I have one. Mine is a 96 Black cherry. I only have 13,000 miles on it, and I also have SLP headers, exhaust, and cold air induction on it. The car sounds mean with the exhaust. They drive nice and smooth, but they don't feel like boat, and the handling is very good for its size. This was the fastest car I owned until I bought the F355 spider.
