Peter,

I'm with you. In other words, I'm a 308 guy too but would do mercenary work in exchange for a 250LM. Why don't we pool our spare change and have one built. We can arrange for custody on alternate weekends :-)

William, Norwoods in Dallas had a repro in the shop for service about a year ago. I'm no concours judge, but it was REALLY well done. You might call them and see if you could learn who built it.

"Double that and then some if you plan on having it built yourself but, why?"

Peter, by this I didn't mean, "Why buy a fakey-do?" I meant "Why have one built when there are so many readily available for half the $?"

Wayne: why? Why not! William's statement: "I dont have the $2M or so in loose change to buy 1 SO a replica is probably the only way I can ever "own" one." is what I believe too. I'd love to have a 250LM - my favorite - but there's not a chance I'll ever be able to afford one even if I win a major lottery, so the next best thing...

(Okay, so both you and I know I wouldn't even have the money to do even a fakey 250LM, since I'm only a "GT4" guy, but you get the idea...)

William, there are plenty of these recreations available out there. If the $ matters at all, you're much better off buying an existing car vs having one built yourself. Add A/C? With no top and little in the way of a wind protection, it wouldn't do you much good.

Expect to pay $150K-$200K for an excellent existing repro and maybe a little more for an absolutely best-in-the-world example. Double that and then some if you plan on having it built yourself but, why?

William, The most accurate replica is made by a fellow in Cuneo, Italy named Giardenengo. His are exact, I know I had one once. Greg Jones has two and I believe that one is for sale. They are not cheap.

William, if you're seriously considering a rebody-on-a-less-desirable-Ferrari-chassis then call Wayne Obrey at Motion Products.

8512 US Hwy 45
Neenah, WI 54956
(920) 725-4688

They've done Cavallino and Forza cover cars (three months ago, Juan Peron's 212 Inter, Feb. '03 Forza) and rebodies. They have a great pannel beater and fabricators.

Beautiful work.

There is a Testa Rossa replica (built on a 250 chassis) being auctioned next weekend in Brookline, at the Bonham auction at the Museum of Transportation. Do a google search for the auction site. I've seen the car, and know the shop owner who prepped it for vintage racing. Quite nice.

vty,

Andrew, WOW that place rules. Wonder if he can make me a TR replica with a 550 engine, trans & suspension. or a TR type body for a 550 ? That would rock :-)

He may have it on the Holman&Moody web site I'm not sure. My plans are still loose but I'm sure I'll see you soon. I will be at WWOC on their tech day sunday 5/18.

William
I bet you can buy one for less money than you can have one made. A friend of mine, Lee Holman has a beautiful one for sale. (704 394 2151) Mention my name.

This has always been 1 of my top Fcar picks. I dont have the $2M or so in loose change to buy 1 SO a replica is probably the only way I can ever "own" one.

Where would I get the detailed technical plans to build the frame & bodywork etc.

If I go ahead with this I would add a more modern suspension & probably AC :-)

I have a good friend who is building very nice replicas of the MB 300SLR that Fangio drove back in the 50s. First 1 is based on a 300SL donor, rest are based on a different MB
