William:

You mentioned the dyno #s...what were the numbers for rear wheel hp? Also, did you have an aftermarket chip in it. The 512 is really the most wonderful F-car isn't it?!
Thanks!

Ross, I'd rather be strapped to a rocket :-)

Rob I covered my intake with a thermal blanket ( I also added a Tubi & removed the Cats) and dyno'd the car, showed almost 470 hp, factory says 428 hp

i forgot to mention how impressed i was with the 996tt's there. had a ride in julian's and it was like being in somebody's private jet - very refined and somewhat removed from the action, but so effortlessly capable. very very impressive. whereas mine felt like i was strapped to the outside of a rocket !

well i managed 179. i am not that proud of the number since i have gone faster in that car but given the circumstances (short run-off area full of either trucks/cars/tirebarriers/standing water etc or a 90 degree right hand turn) its ok. think i can get into the mid 180's next time. some of the other fchatters were there and we had a great time.
craig had opened the event up to some pistonheads.com guys and that provided us with an interesting collection of extremely hopped up porsches, audis (rs4's with 540+ hp !!), tvr's, nobles, ultimas, diablo etc.

as an aside, (and risking another salvo from allan fiedler) i must say that i am still happy that i don't have a diablo. took a ride in that with its very pleasant owner; we didn't try to push it too far as it was close to the end of the day, but it was just as i remembered from driving one myself a few years ago - rattles, creaking, relatively poor build quality etc. the murcielago has come a long way.

For safety, definately maximum manufacturer recommended pressures cold. Many owner's manuals actually state a high-speed, high-load pressure different from normal. This is critical, you're really going to load those tires at 160++ mph.

Otherwise, since you can't change gearing, it's just limiting drag. Look at Bonneville competition cars: skinny tires at high pressures, no windscreen wipers, no side-view mirrors, low ride height. Taping radiator inlets is a good idea, one that should be approached with great caution. Upside is less drag and three additional mph, downside costs $40,000.

I've also tried chilling the intake trackt, the results were more power of positive thinking than actual horsepower. Heat reflective tape and coatings is good though. If you really are serious about chilling the intake, skip the "inventor's corner" bit and bolt-on nitrous oxide.

Taping body seams is good.

Basically, the most one can do easily with a late model Ferrari is lower it and tape the body. Skinny tires is a big help, but you'd have to source wheels and tire, etc. (Not).

Be safe!

what EFWUN said is a good start. If you are serious You will want to remove the intake snorkels that are inside the rear fenders & wrap them in an insulating blanket, then wrap the entire intake in the same material. Thats what i have done on mine :-) + I had the air filter boxes painted with heat reflective silver that looks interesting. You can also wrap the entire fuel system, cus the cooler the gas & air the more hp your engine will make.

I would definately tape over the front grille & brake duct openings, might experiment with covering the engine cover exhaust ports if its just for a short run.

I would guess you want higher tire pressure than for a track day with lots of corners

Let us know how it goes :-)

I'd suggest starting with high tire pressures, remove outside mirrors, and depending on the length of the run and run-up, maybe taping over rad inlets? Maybe windshield wipers too? Dunno for sure, never ran a road car on track.

as some of you may have seen, some fchatters and others are doing a vmax run at an airfield this sunday. i will be trying to defend the 512tr's honor. am wondering about optimum tire inflation, optimum shift points vs where the torque curve tapers off etc.
anybody got any pointers for me?
