Does anybody think that the Daytona, excuse me, I mean the 365 GTB/4 , deserve a vote or two?

The Dino is the prettiest. (Let's just say it's a Ferrari and leave it at that)

The 308's are the most recognizable.

Last years F-1 machines were the greatest of Ferrari's F-1's.

250 GTO, P3 and P4 and the California spyder will always be cars that can stir anybody's soul

The most classic Ferrari?
Or "the most definitive Ferrari"?
I'd have to vote based on your definition of Ferrari...

Ferrari "the race team"... the P3 or P4... winning racecars that were absolute works of art.

Ferrari "the supercar maker"... the F50... it and the McLaren F1 are the *definitions* of supercars... and both were also works of art.

Ferrari "the collectors' car maker"... the 250 GTO... the icon of high appreciation... there may be a few others with higher price tags, but the 250GTO is the most used example... the legend.

Ferrari "automotive artists"... the P3/P4... Italian artistry instantiated in automotive form... the most beautiful car ever built... the F50 would be my second place vote here.

Ferrari "street sportscar maker"... the GTO (aka 288GTO)... it was the ultimate manifestation of the 308 form... and its the 308 design that has most graced the streets and is undoubtedly the most recognizable Ferrari to the masses.

That one would have to go to Audi. The streamliner they made is not to be believed. I saw it at Goodwood. Seeing Hans Stuck drive it up the hill was really something. The smell of the "Black Gasoline" brought back memories of Heuys coming in low after the Phantoms had layed down the Napolam. It's a smell you don't forget...

Jim, I've heard they're adding a "Best Replicar" class to the awards at next year's Concorso, so no problem.

Racing pedigree and road wortiness says, 250 GTO.
After learning about its racing accomplishments that car is like the streetable F2002 of its time.

I'm not sure if Nick comes to US events. He's a very nice guy and really loves cars. I'll look for him at Pebble/Laguna. Next year Pebble is featuring Ferrari we should make it the FCHAT convention! If Wayne lets me I'll bring the P4.

Oh, and thanks for the pic post, Mark. That's what I thought, and that's a great pic.

My vote for "most classic" to the general public would also be the 308/328, the most recognizable Ferrari.

I don't know about the "most classic" to me; a year ago I was the general public; I didn't even know Ferrari made cars before the 70's. But I was VERY into the later ones. I was in high school in the late 80's, so the Testarossa comes to mind, personally, as the ultimate super Ferrari.

Jim, Does Nick mason come to the US ofetn for events ? I have a friend, Nikolai Sikorsky, Yes that Sikorsky :-) Who is also a certifiable car nut as well as a classical violinist who I am sure would love to meet Nick to talk about music and cars. Nikolai will probably be at the Greenwich Conours, Hes like an uncle to me and was the person who got me hooked on cars

William: Thanks for the book mention. I'll pick it up for sure. Hell, I've been a fan of Nick Mason's for years and that was before I was into Ferraris!

James: What a story. I never get tired of reading moments like that. Got a BIG kick out of "yeah, but that dirt is from LeMans..." to which some other gearhead responded "uh...do you still have the dirt?"

Love this site.

Nick and his family all use and enjoy their cars. In 2000 he and I were at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. We were running in the same group. He was driving his F1 (312?) His wife was driving their GTO, Dan Gurney was driving a Eagle F1, David Piper was driving his P4, Nicky Lauda was driving a Ford GT MK-I, and I was driving my MK-IV. We were all at the top of the hill, waiting after our run for the course to clear so we could drive back down to the pits.
Nick looked out at the field of cars, turned to me and said: "Pretty special..."

All-time most beautiful ever, never to be out done: P4
Last really classic, imbodying the spirit of the marque as set down by Mr. ferrari himself: 250 GTO
And on the third step of the podium: 250 Cal Spyder.

My 2 Lira.

Lee- you might want to buy "At the Limit," a text and photo essay involving numerous (21?) of Mason's cars, driven on the track, with commentary by a race car driver, and some nice pics. Not all ferraris, but some awful nice cars.
I'll think about my choice; picking one is tough. I agree that "classic" connotes one which embodies all the virtues, and epitomizes the marque. I too, am partial to the LWB Cal. Spyder with covered lites, but its certainly not the ultimate in performance. And, although it may be sacrilege, there are aspects of the 250 SWB that appeal to me more than the 250 GTO, since it carries over the semi-bulbous look of the Cistalia and the early post war european sports coupes, but is aggressive in an old fashioned way. Hmmmmm...

250 GTO series 1 is the Ferrari. Period.

A Niki Lauda 312 will also define a Ferrari F1 for me (age showing).

Ultimate street Ferrari 365 GTS/4

Must also admit the P4 and memories of Daytona weigh strongly.

This is a no lose topic - everybody's a winner.

Yes, pontooned Testarossa. That could be the classic/ classic.

Another opinion, if I may say, would be a Ferrari from the late 1950 to early 1960 with 12 cylinders and roll up windows. Chrome trim and bumpers, heater. No A/C; no radio. Dare I write...an actual transportation vehicle (car) that could be driven in the rain and nice enough to go to a prom all dressed in white. A classic.

"This paved the way for Ferrari to become the sports car "superpower" of the world."

Sorry, but that credit goes to the 250 series cars. The 308 actually appeared at a low point in Ferrari's road car history and honestly didn't represent very well against the competition.

In my opinion, the 250 TdF, SWB, and GTO probably best represent the spirit of Ferrari and the blurring of the line between road and competition cars.

Well the 308 is certainly a strong candidate for most recognizable Ferrari and the TV show Magnum did a lot for Ferrari's world image. So in that sense a 308 could be called a classic.

But a true classic Ferrari must have won many races & maybe a world championship or 2. The 250GTO dominated international sports car racing for at least 2 years I believe and its also 1 of the most expensive cars ever sold at auction. Back in the early 90s a Japanese businessman paid $16M for a 250 GTO

a bit thin skinned are we? collin, don't take offense, everybody will have very definite ideas about the question you raised.

imho, 250gto is the classic of all time.
now if you want most recognized by the non cognoscenti, then 3x8 and tr's are the best bet.

250GTO is THE Ferrari when Ferrari people speak of the marque.

308 is more a classic amongst people who are not up on Ferrai history. 308 is a beautiful car but it lacks the history & cutting edge tech & performance of real classics like the 250GTO, 250SWBGT, 330P4 etc

Collin, "classic" has nothing to do with most easily recognized. Further, no V8 Ferrari, sic, will ever be thought of as a "classic" IMHO. The 250 and 275 are the most likely canidates.

My vote: The 308 GTS.

Reason: While it is one of the least expensive, it is also the most easily recognized Ferrari of all time, and really brought Ferrari to the forefront (Magnum PI, Miami Vice, Cristi Brinkley, etc.) in the public's mind. This paved the way for Ferrari to become the sports car "superpower" of the world.

Your vote?
