I would try to keep as much of the 550 mechanicals & suspension brakes etc. Just put a new Testa Rossa style body on it & a bare racing interior |

You may want to check the Speedvision.com acheives, they followed the build-up and posted six articles or so on it. |

Quick blurb: "Possibly the most unusual car of the Italiano was a one-off project built by Steve Moal of Moal Inc. in Oakland who has built special hotrods for people like Tim Allen. The Zausner Torpedo, so named for its owner Eric Zausner, is a custom aluminum body open wheel roadster using the drive train of a Ferrari Maranello with its 5.5-liter 500 hp V-12 engine and six-speed transaxle. Everything else on the vehicle was custom fabricated by Moal, including the body, suspension components, ostrich leather interior and gauges. It took two years to build. I couldn't get a price for the project, but I'll bet Zausner wouldn't trade it for the McLaren. There are no plans to build anymore Torpedoes." |

He has a company called Moal,Inc. in the San Francisco Bay area. He's a member of Bay Area Roadsters (www.bayarearoadsters.com), so maybe you could contact them and they could give you contact info. I did a google search, but I couldn't find a website for him. |

Here are two pictures a friend took during the Concourso in '02. Both links to larger pics in 1024x768. For the real adventurous, I have both in 1600x1200 on my hard drive. Sunny

In reading the articles on the Zausner rod, it was built with a cost no object basis, I believe they mentioned $6000 just to modify the 550 shifter to fit the rod the way they wanted. Everything except the drivetrain was handbuilt just for this one car. |

Willi: there was a guy who had a hot rod built using a 550 drivetrain, it had an interesting retro saltflats style body, ostrich seats, etc. Was in alot of the magazines last year:- maybe somebody could find a pic.Owner was a west coast collector, if memory serves. |

I guess I'm obsessing about the pontoon TR cus I was driving on the track at Sebring with John Shirley's gorgeous pontoon TR. I think it would be so cool to get a wrecked 550 Maranello & rebody it with something similair to a pontoon TR body. What do you guys think ? This is after all what Ferraris own Rosso concept was although I think the Rosso hindquarters are more Miata than TR |
