Don't forget the 2+2 factor-- that always results in a lower price. The only exception to that rule I can think of is the 365 California Spyder:

As I just bought my Ferrari, this is fresh on my mind. Here's why I bought a 308GTS: looks, driving experience, performance, history. I could have bought a C5 Vette with better performance figures, or a dozen same aged hondas all with better reliability...

...but its raining today, and tonight I'll be happy to go sit in the garage and LOOK at my car while I have a cool drink.

Hmmm, lets take my 308 GT4 as an example

1) Performace: reported to be better than the 308 carb or 2v FI. Probably not as good as a 4 valve car though.

2) Looks: Controversial. Bertone design. Some like the design, some don't. Not sure if "chicks dig it". I haven't had any flashing me lately, so maybe not.

3) Rarity: 2800 produced, less than total 308 GTB/S (considering entire model run).

4) Costs/Reliability: About the same as 308 GTB/S.

5) Intangibles: Hmmm. Don't know what you mean here. I suppose the Dino factor comes in here.

6) Driving experience: Supposed to be better than a 308 GTB/S (Forza buyers guide article).

7) History: Enzo was involved in the design of the car (according to Forza buyers guide article).

So, should GT4 values be higher than 308 GTB/S values?

There's got to be something else, cause GT4 prices are definately less than GTB/S prices. Or is it just a looks thing? The dino factor: but 246 GT's are still worth a pretty penny, so you would think that it wouldn't harm this car.

Maybe the GT4's should be 6 figure cars :-)

Robert's reply said it best, but here is my opinion:

3. performance
1. looks
5. rarity
2. mechanical reliablility/costs
7. intangibles
4. driving experience
6. history

Driving experience could be close to #1 on the right day!

What makes a road car desirable to me are Looks & power, handling, brakes, exclusivity, price, and a very High, Chicks Dig It quotient :-)

Roush's Rule of Race Cars. (FML publisher)

"The more it looks like a race car the more desirable it is."

Some truth in it you gotta admit.

Are you including race cars ?

In that case:
Race & championship wins
Famous drivers/ famous races
exclusivity
styling
power
handling

For this discussion, let's consider cars before 1990. It's obvious some models have appreciated (or just held up) way better than their similarly priced (at first) contemporaries. Here's a list of factors I have come with. Feel free to rate them and/or add your own: (in no particular order)
1. performance
2. looks
3. rarity
4. mechanical reliablility/costs
5. intangibles
6. driving experience
7. history

I'll weigh in later.

Dave
