Pete In auto mode trans hunts for gears and shifts MUCH more often than you would. Also in manual you can put it N and use brakes to stop in stop and go. Auto mode bogs and downshifts. Best Jim |

Hmmm, I am confused. Why does driving in auto mode wear the clutch? Lets think about this. The Ferrari F1 gearbox is a manual gearbox with a computer controlled gear selection and clutch mechanisim ... right? Thus when you are driving it in MANUAL mode the car changes gear for you when you pull one of the levers backwards. Thus YOU say change but the car does the rest ... ie. works the clutch for you. When in AUTO mode the car decides when to change but otherwise everything is exactly as per the MANUAL mode ... ie. the car works the clutch for you. With F1 you do not have clutch (I believe) so when you stop at the lights ... the car works the clutch for you and makes sure the engine does not stall, and disengages the clutch for take offs ... whether in MANUAL mode or AUTO mode. Thus please explain to me why the clutch will wear more in AUTO mode than manual ... when everything is the same. The only difference I can think of could be if the computer keeps going up and down gears unnecesarily? Is this just a myth/legend or should it be in the BS catagory Pete |

Des The Allagash waterway begins in Greenville, ME. and winds 600 miles through the largest track of uninhabited land in the lower 48 North (which is rare for a river) on through Canada to the St Lawrance Seaway. You'll see Moose, catch rainbow trout, find forest rangers who'll adjust the dam gates for you so you can shoot the rapids, waterfalls you can swim in, abandoned mining camps and railroad trains and few people, esp late in Sept. Dress warm and bring a spare paddle... |

This subject seems to come up every few months. Anyway, I've used the auto mode 3 times. First two times were to see what it would do in normal driving and on my Ferrari workout routes. Final time was answering the cellphone, in traffic, in downtown Seattle. Since then, I haven't used the auto mode in about two years. |

Ross That's a very good question. When I spoke to Ferrari about using this box in the new quatroporte they said that the "normal" default mode would be automatic. Lets face it many 4 doors get driven into palces like NYC at rush hour and even though I did that many, many times in my TR I reluctantly had to admit it was more fun in my wife's BMW. I personally don't think the clutch will stand up to endless stop and go in auto mode or even "manual" mode. The market for a four door is quite different than for a 360. I don't see how this is going to work. The Maser coupe does seem to work in stop and go, no smell of clutch, but I've yet to give it the 5pm entire Westside Highway test on a 100 degree day. We shall see... Des Of course there are many women who can drive manual transmitions and while thats something to consider when looking for a mate finding someone who you still enjoy spending time with after 8 days alone together on the Allagash, 7 of which were pissing rain is a better bet... Best Jim |

Is everyone here married to, engaged to or dating a woman who can't drive a manual transmission...? Do the dealers sell these points with remarks like "It has an automatic transmission option, so your wife can drive it"...? i'm just wondering, 'cause i know plenty of women who can drive a manual transmission and plenty of men who can't... |

So far I've only found two uses for the "auto" mode: 1) When buying the car I showed the button to my wife and told her "See, YOU can drive the car too!" 2) For a little entertainment while driving with someone not familiar with Ferraris. Drive the car until it gets into sixth gear. Then decrease the speed as low as you can before it shifts into fifth. Then mash down on the loud pedal and see how many gears it drops down. The passenger usually likes to hear the car blip the throttle and drop a bunch of gears, and take off. You can do the same thing manually, but it's neat to see the car do it too. Other than these two times, I never find use for the "auto" mode. Maybe some other folks use "auto" when one of their hands is busy holding a soda or a cell phone to their head. YIKES. |

Hi Ming. I hear that the F1 on some 360s still has the nasty habit of gratuitously going into neutral every now and then. That really puts me off. |

I think it is something to do with the different version of firmware(software) used in both cars. The early F1 on 355/360s tend to be problematic. The latest F1 on 575M and 360(as well as on Maser) seems to correct most of the previous trouble. |

ok fine, so in the 360 its hell on the clutch. but what about in the maser for example where they are always saying that people should consider it as having 2 trannies in one car, you drive thru the gears but the wife can use the auto, or you can use the auto in heavy traffic. isn't it the same gearbox? how can it be bad for everything in the 360 but encouraged to use it in the maser? |

OF COURSE IT WILL INCREASE CLUTCH WEAR. THINK ABOUT THE LOGISTICS OF IT. I HAVE NEVER USED NOR WILL I USE THE AUTO MODE. |

When you've gone out to dinner and had too much to drink. Put it in auto and let your wife drive home. If she's had too much to drink as well take a cab. I suspect this mode is hell on the clutch. Jim |

Well I read a magazine article about Rubens driving a 360 to a race. In the article was a part about him using the "auto" mode while he answered a cell phone call. Or you could use it when your drinking coffee. Cause we all know that there are no cup holders in these cars. Hahahaaaa. |

Other then the obvious that you need your hands for something else, when is it most benificial to the tranny to drive around the the "auto" mode?? does the auto mode reduce clutch wear? |
