To replace the cam seals on a TR requires engine removal. At a Ferrari dealer that will be a three grand MINIMUM ! Once out, just keep counting the money as it slips out of your hands. I had a 1986 TR and the 30,000 mile service cost $8,000.00 at FAF in Atlanta. And that was four years ago.

talking about cheap:

I had to buy a light bulb for my wife's Mercedes CLK 430. It was the little parking light bulb, looks like a regular bulb but has a different locking mechanism. 6W, 12V, noting special, right?

try $9.77
They alsmost had to call security to get me out of the store.

I do not think that Ferrari has expensive light bulbs like these!

I told my wife that she should never ever say a word about my parts costs!

Damn, even the seals are not cheap.

Oil lines can cost as much as $1100.00 each. Ferrari parts are not cheap and neither is the maintenance labor costs to replace seals.

expect every hose to leak (and i mean every hose) when you drive it-factor in that replacement cost.

I could not agree more.

It is like a 45 year old virgin. you get her home and have fun and the latex goes bad....think of the cost!

Okay, that is not the best example....

Lloyd,

Stay away from ultra low mileage cars.. they're going to need more than a 15k maintenance once they start being driven.

I'd keep in the 12-30k range mileage wise and make sure the car was serviced + driven regularly.

Every TR I've seen that hasn't been exercised regularly has had problems down the line.

I am considering buying my first Ferrari. I am presently an NSX owner and am interested in a 512TR. I have found several very low mileage ones for sale. One in particular has sat in a showroom for 5 years until they recently took it in for a 15k maintenance with belts. Specifically, what issues should I be concerned about with such a car. I have heard that seals go bad. (What type of seals? engine, AC, brakes?) Would a major service correct these items? I appreciate your thoughts and any other suggestions you might have for me in shopping for a 512TR, including what is a fair price for a low mileage 512. Thanks
