JRV, you are definitely correct in posting that the cars are basic and fairly easy to work on. The parts are expensive but at least you can find them relatively easily. I am glad that there are vendors out there willing to stock these slow moving parts for us people who want to keep these cars going. Almost all my parts came from Partsource in Maine and I have nothing but good things to say about Geoffrey Ohland.

Bryan, Most of the problem items I found had tolerances at or above the higher limit. Just general wear from a 35 year old piece of machinery. However there were a few potentially dangerous things; one of the exhaust valves had a big chip out of it, the flywheel ring gear teeth had been ground off to only half of their width at some point, and the fuel crossover tube between the fuel tanks had rotted to a point where it broke free in my hand when I grabbed it. Any of those items could have easily left me stranded and cost me more in additional damage had they let loose while I was driving. Anything that needed replacing is being replaced. I don't want to have to take this car apart again for some time and like they say, "while you are this far along you might as well do ..." And you are correct, Pete, the engine compartment is still not detailed.

>>what kinds of things surfaced that would have been future disasters? <<

The valve trains are a weak spot on the 2 cam series, many moving parts and all the pieces are prone to excessive wear after they got older, causing noisy valve trains. I would think most have been restored by now though. Overall they are striaght forward and basic cars so work is not that difficult, however some parts are pricey.

ps: I don't have ME, and my file sizes are all adjusted down to format...loads to 39% then hangs up

David - for the v-12 owners, what kinds of things surfaced that would have been future disasters?

It worked one time only then nothing. Small file, read instructions, followed procedure, asked Rob, 'Whats up'. No dice. Must be an evil conspirancy.

Problem uploading too! Threads and profile. Would Windows ME have something to do with it? Rob?

Good pic of a restoration in progress.

I've been trying to post from photos of some of the 330GTC resto's I've done, but having some type of problem getting them to upload.

I've long felt the 330GTC's were one of the most well rounded older cars Ferrari built. Fast, nimble, easy to drive in Traffic or throw around on twisty roads.

Over the years I've worked on, restored and driven many of them and they're one of my favorites for driving fun.

Thanks, Rob. The car looked good but it was getting tired. There were a few items that surfaced when the engine came apart so it was a good thing that it was checked. I potentially caught some expensive repairs in the future by taking things apart now. Hopefully it will see the light of day again sometime this summer.

I've got one Ferrari and it's in the barn, pasture, basement, bedroom, workshop, wife's garage, neighbor's house, paint shop, engine shop, and elsewhere once I remember.

Want to pay me full market?

"Next, he had me follow him to his house where he invited me in, poured me a drink and told me his life story."

Or like this:
"Next, he had me follow him to his house where he invited me in, poured me a drink and everything went fuzzy and then went black."

LWayne, I was beginning to think that this was the start of a Charles Manson-type story! The old: I've got a Ferrari in the barn. Just walk through this dark doorway and have a look. WHACK!"

I had a 1967 330GTC and loved it. It was rosso barchetta with black interior. I traded a 1986 TR for it and later sold it for $70k . I wish I would have keep it !

Okay then, let's start one here. My 330 GTC experience:

In late 1997, I decided it was time to take the plunge and purchase my first F-car. I narrowed the choices to either a Daytona or 330 GTC. After a little market analysis, I determined that the GTC prices had hit rock bottom and we just starting to climb and, after driving a Daytona, I came to the conclusion that I would purchase a GTC.

I visted GT Motors in Glendale, CA and test drove a red/black 330 GTC that the shop owner had personally owned for years. It was a fantasic experience! The car drove alomst like a modern car but made all of those beautiful vintage V-12 sounds. I was really impressed with how user friendly it was. The clutch and steering weren't nearly as heavy as in the Daytona and the visibilty was better than the Japanese econobox I was driving at the time. While it was obviously less powerful than the Daytona, at 300hp (give or take a little factory fudging), it wasn't under-powered by any means.

While it felt like a very solid and well maintained car, for the $84K that he was asking, I figured I could get something that was as mechanically solid, yet much better cosmetically. This car was in nice "driver" condition, but at the time, over $80K was concours territory.

I continued to look around and finally came across a new ad in the FML for a "fully restored" GTC in La Jolla, CA (San Diego area). I called the owner and was informed that the car had undergone a complete restoration but hadn't been completely put together yet and that he would be copmpleting the car before selling. It was red/creme.

On my day off, I made the drive down to La Jolla to see the GTC. The seller was a small exotic car dealer just down the street from Symbolic. The owner took me back into the shop area and showed me the engine, which was sitting on a workbench, looking stunning in shiny aluminum but not yet together. Okay, what about the rest of the car? Next, he took me upstairs to a small loft area where all of the chrome peices were leaning against the wall, freshly redone. Two newly reapholstered seats were sitting there as well, wrapped in plastic along side a stack of new Wilton wool carpet. Okay, but where's the car, already?

Next, he had me follow him to his house where he invited me in, poured me a drink and told me his life story. Finally, we went out to the garage and there it was. The body and frame were there with the un-restored rear transaxle sitting along side. Against the walls were the freshly painted doors, trunk lid and hood. The car wasn't even close to being completed! Why was he advertising it then? He needed money to complete the project and thought he could pre-sell it to some sucker with the promise of finishing it up after the fact. Yeah, right. I had a nice drive back to L.A.

Anyway, an expensive divorce ended up killing my plans to purchase the F-car, but I've always like the GTC and can vividly remember how sweet it was to drive. I've also noticed that GTC values have since skyrocketed from around $80K for near-concours cars at the time to well over $100K for excellent examples today.

Great Cars...

I can't remember ever seeing a thread devoted to them.
