I had heard that 348's got "nervous" at high speeds, but I was stable enough to take this picture with one hand, whilst returning from Rob's dyno day, early Sunday morning.

The car felt completely stable, and definitely had more speed, but I did not want to end up in handcuffs, or more frighteningly, having my wife come bail me out!

they can take you in if you are going 30 over the limit, its considered reckless driving. So it would be 85 to 95 in most parts of the country,

Speaking of speed, ever since I put the 308 on the dyno I found out the speedo was of course off, but I had forgotten by how much...
I have since purchased a portable GPS that works great.
I put velcro on the back of it and then just stick it on my dashmat.
Instant speed verification...

146 in the 77 308 before the GPS
so it was probably only something like139

First light, Sunday AM on I95 north of Boston topped out my 328 at 157. Saw 160 on my 512TR on the back straight at Pocono. Still working up on my 360 but saw 145 on the back straight at Sebring last week.

Had my 328 to 130 and had a thought, at what speed do they take you to jail? I figured 130 would do it so I slowed down.

Indicated 140 mph in a rented 355 spyder with the top down. Rock solid (felt like 80) but very, very windy.

I'm still working on getting Ferrari, but did 170 mph (speedometer reading) on my '97 Porsche 993. Top speed is suppose to be 171 mph...I often wish I would have taken it the extra little bit just so I could say I had "topped it out". But it didn't occur to me the time. My previous top speed was 150mph, so I wanted to go 160mph. It went there so easy, I just kept going!

If I am driving really fast I always slow it way down when I am passing someone. People just aren't expecting you to fly by at 100. If they come over as you are passing it could get real ugly. I am going to try and top my 125 this weekend.

To be clear, I shifted OUT of fifth at 8,500... the revs were NOT at 8,500 when I went into sixth.

I read that after I posted, and realized that I didn't quite say that right! :-)

Last year when I rented the 360 Modena, I got on the Austrian Autobahn at Innsbruck, heading east toward Kitzbuhl. It was a beautiful crisp Monday morning, blue skies, no wind, and NO TRAFFIC whatsoever. And I found myself on a straightaway that went as far as the eye could see.

So I redlined each gear (including fifth). Shifted into sixth at 8,500, and started slowly climbing. By the time I reached 275 kph (about 170 mph), it felt like it was peaking, and I started to see a bend on the horizon, so I got off it and started my gradual coast back down.

That's the great thing about the 360. With the venturi in the undertray beneath the car, the faster you go, the more downforce you create. At 170 mph, it felt glued to the road. Incredible experience.

Magoo, my thoughts...when you are doubling the speed of the cars you are passing, 125 is near the limit of my comfort zone on public roads. Other drivers are not usually looking for someone behind them traveling 125!

Is that by the golf course near yonkers? im not down there too much, every so often i find myself there for one reason or another. 684 is a good place right by the airport, freshly paved and smooth but there can be traffic and cops. 84 is good too. Do you ever go to the car show at marcus dairy in danbury?

Tim, on the Sprain Parkway, north of Jackson Avenue and also on 87north after the tolls. But the best place to hit top speed where I have seen Diablos hit 200 mph is on Ocean Parkway on Long Island. One guy travels one way to make sure there are no cops and the other guy guns it going the opposite way.

In a Ferrari I've been at 170 mph on an italian highway in a 360.
With my GT2 I've hit 201 mph (digital speedo reading) once , and 197 mph a couple more times. And it was still pulling!

My 308QV between 125-130...trying to keep eye on road and speedo at night-time in north Florida with deer lerking about...I decided it was time to back off. Mind you I still have my 390 wheels with Michelin TRX tires. Maybe it's time for a wheel upgrade!

Since were talking about non-Ferrari speed: 178 on radar at Daytona on a Suzuki. Sounds fast, but you have to slow to 40 - 50 for the left hander as you come off the banking. The traps are at the #2 marker, soo you really have to stay on the gas under the bubble to get that kind of speed. Then you get on the brakes, and try not to lock the front tire. Much fun.

I have hit 180 on the tr do not how accurate it is though. The revs were at 6700 though. I also hit 160 in the 355. But the Lotus was bouncing off the red line at 185. Damn I wish it had another gear.

177, witnessed, with revs and plenty of willingness to pull left in it. Solid as a rock, could drive with one finger - amazing how much the speed scrubs off just lifting at that velocity though. Oh, this was in my new Porsche turbo.

Fastest in a Ferrari was 155, witnessed, and that was floaty and twitchy enough for me to not want to do it again. I would assume the underbody air management on the contemporary cars, especially the 360, would make them stick better at speed than what I experienced. My older Porsche turbos were more stable.

Liter sportbike? : ) Now that is speed!

Get up early Sunday morning, do your deed, get your wood and get home before the rest of the world is even out of bed.

Ernie:

The problem with the 348 is that they get twitchie which driven fast. Check the pressures regularly, have your shop check the suspension, ride height, etc. If everything is perfect, the car will run straight and true. The sypder supposedly fixed that with the wider suspension, but I couldn't tell the difference. I did all of that before I tried to see how fast my 348 would go (167)

I have had my 348 only up to 140mph, ran out of straight road and the car felt twichy. But I have had it up to 120-130mph a few times. Hey guys with 348's do you feel your car gets twichy above 120, if so how can I correct this.

130mph in the 308QV on a dead ahead straight backroad in the middle of nowhere. I know I could top it up at school though as there is nothing in CT up here and some good roads to do things like this. And when the engine work is done it should take a lot less time to get to these speeds. For the most part I'm slow, very slow in the Ferrari. Just kind of cruise along on the roads., when I speed though I really speed.

170 mph at Pocono back straight :-) God the 512TR sounds great with the Borla exhaust. Gonna try for 175 this year.

By the way the fastest I had her sideways was about 110 at the chicane at Watkins Glen :-)

Fastest I ever went in a car was 185 mph in my Countach on 395 N of Carson CIty NV on a 5 mile straight :-) I'm sure the 512TR could easily beat that but Ive calmed down a lot on the street since I realized you can go to prison in the US for excessive speeding, what a bunch of Dweebs the Cops & Judges are

to answer andrew: i would not do those speeds in the usa; as u say the law would kill u. in europe, u have to pick your spots, and times of the day. germany is too crowded even though theres no limit, apart from early in the morning. france is great traffic wise (ie none), but if they catch u they throw the book at u. italy is still the best place. good roads, few people, and the cops are very friendly towards ferraris. i got pulled over at a toll booth, since the timestamp showed a fast speed from the last booth, and triggered the cop to come out of his office to wave me over. once he got over to the window he asked me what year the car was and whether i was enjoying myself. i answered in the affirmative. he then asked me to rev the engine and then accelerate back onto the highway as fast as possible so he could hear the noise wash back at him !! great guy. yes, i did feel lucky too.

have to b careful what i say since the last time i posted something in this vein i got chastised, but.....i did 200 mph (its what it said on the dial, probably a bit optimistic, but not by too much), on a long downhill straight highway in the po valley in italy in my 512tr. and before anybody gives me any more grief, it was a dry, clear afternoon and there was nobody on the road during the run. i have done close to this in france in similar conditions. the car felt solid and like it wanted to keep going but i couldn't see far enough down the road to continue at that pace. in general, the tr feels like a vault at higher speeds, and depending on the time of day (cops/traffic/weather) you can cruise at speeds between 120-150 mph till you run out of gas (and at 11mpg, thats not too far !)

The speedo on my '82 308 said 130 mph, but I'd say more like 120-125. Felt solid, and was still pulling mildly. After the Escort SRX goes in, I'll try to better that speed record.

Taking my 360 up to 150 was effortless. Surely could go much higher.

I regularly take it up to 130 and back down to 60 a few seconds later on the track I regularly go to. While going 130 is fun... threshold braking from 130 into a 130-degree turn is far more exhilarating... but then drifting through 90-degree turns at 85 is surely the best. Oh, but then there's those 60mph S's... ahh, its all just too much fun... and the Ferrari does all I ask of it... just like the magazine articles say.
