One of my best "spotting" experiences occurred back in the 80's, when my wife and i were driving along the outer banks of the carolinas very early one morning on our way to a little island off the coast of hatteras. We pulled into a diner to get breakfast, around 6am, and what pulls in but a well-worn Bugatti monoposto, with leather-capped, goggled driver. Of course, i rushed out to talk to the guy, who seemed almost as surprised as me, that anyone would bother to recognize his car in such at out of the way place at that hour.

Or it could have been a mundane looking 1996 355 Spider that side strakes and tail lights were added so that it would look like the more exotic 348 Spider. I understand there are kits available for all of you 355 owners out there.

Andrew,
just talked to Manuel. He could not believe how I knew that he was at Starbucks with the Ferrari. He did not even know that I knew the car was up in RI instead of Orlando, where it was supposed to be stationed. :-)

He is at that Starbucks pretty much every day. When you see him the next time talk to him again and tell him you are a fellow F-Chatter and I told you to ask him some questions. If yxou mention my name I am sure he will be more than happy to let you check out the car.

On the engine rev though I must admit that I do not do that either. I do not feel that that can be good for the engine.

Martin you are right, this is a disease! Why else would we tear down suspension components and have all the nuts and bolts replated when you can't even see them? I also remember all the Ferraris I've seen. It gives me a real sense of pride to know that after all the years of admiration from a far, I now have one of my own. I also will talk and be friendly to anyone who shows interest in these cars.

Andrew,
no it was not me, but it was the 348 Spider I sold. How small of a world :-)

I will tell Manuel to rev it for you the next time. To his defense I must say this is his first Ferrari. He is not soo long into it like most of us that he can distinguish them and know all the differences but he will learn. As I always say Ferrari is a virus and once you have been contaminated you will never be able to live without "Treatment".

William, without the heritage, Ferrari would be just another small-volume produced automobile. It's the heritage, the mystique, and Enzo Ferrari himself that gives us the passion for Ferrari that we have.

Ah, the joys of living less than five minutes from FNA. And the most Ferrari populated area (at least was a couple years ago, think still is). I will admit that I've never seen one out in the rain, other than mine.

Ferraris are so rare in S.C. that I have to get a parade permit to take it out.

You want to hear unsettling ? A friend of mine with a 275GTB4 was a mechanic with NART back in the 60s & 70s, so he's at an FCA dinner somewhere. So he's sharing the table with some other people. One guy states how he doesnt give a damn about Ferrari heritage, race history etc. My friend almost throttled the guy :-)

I don't know how it works in the US but it could be a 1995 model first registered in 1996. Can't see what difference one year would make.

It must be nice to live someplace where you might see another ferrari. I've been traveling the hills of North West Georgia for Two years and have yet to see another F-Car. When you consider the fact that you can purchase a 308 or Mondial for less than than a new pick up truck. I just wish I could see more Red on the Highway and less on the Neck.

The first year of F355 production was devoted to Berlinettas (and maybe GTSs?). The F348 continued in Sipder form. This should cover 1995. Maybe its a 95 that was not purchased until 96 or maybe Ferrari continued 348 spider production just a little longer than we thought.

The passion for Ferrari's has always been tremendous for me, EVERY SINGLE TIME I am in a car I imagine im in a ferrari (550 or 355) and every time I drive a car I pretend im driving a ferrari, call this obsession but i am proud to be obsessed..I remember every single time I have ever seen a Ferrari and whenever I do it makes my week to see an automotive work of art, it even gets better when I can talk to the owner, which is rarely the case (most of the time all i see the the challenge grill and it zooms by me) :-(

I always talk to people about it when I stop. Most people don't know much so I'm polite and give them a little history about Italian cars which for some reason seems to interest them (I thought we were the only ones interested).

Driving to school when I stayed at my dad's house I would have to go up the highway for a bit. Literally everyday I would come up the left lane on a dark blue S-Class Mercedes in the middle lane with a lady and two little guys in the back, maybe 6 or 7, I'm presuming on their way to school. The two of them would press up against the glass and stare at the 308 and the mom would speed up to stay with me for abit. I always smiled and waved to them, and of course would drop it into 4th and let it rip. They got the biggest kick out of it, without sounding too sappy, it was kind of cool.

Rob LOL,
I have the same reservation about approaching other F-owners when I am in my beat up Jeep Grand Cherokee. "yeah, right he drives a Ferrari..."

I put a little 2 inch F-shield sticker on my wifes MB430CLK Looks very good and barely noticable.

Was that in Providence RI? Was it a red over black 348 Spider? Did it have Florida tags?

He could have just misspoken. Sometimes that happens to me. Just a few days back I was taking pictures of the 550 Maranello for the website and a few minutes later somebody askes about the age of my car, I said it was a 2001, then corrected myself. I was thinking (dreaming) about the 550:-)

usually I answer questions. If I am in a rush I try to explain I gotta go but also give people dates for car shows so they can come to view these cars.

A lot of Ferrari passion has started by looking at thse cars on the street and talking to the owners. We should continue this fever!

I will talk to anyone, especially attractive females and interested kids. I usually don't approach other Ferrari owners unless I'm in the Ferrari myself. It's just kinda my style. I don't have prancing horse stickers on my other cars, but would like to get some small ones.

Saw a beautiful red 355 spyder yesterday going North on the Tollway. The 18 months I've had the 328 in Dallas I've only met one other Ferrari on the road. In my other cars I tend to see one every week or two.

I realized that but why not just say I thought they only made them up to 1995, I can't imagine someone knowingly adjusting the age of their car by one year, then again I don't know anyone who does not know the year their car was born.

It is a rare occasion indeed that I am parked, getting gas, washing car etc. that someone doesn't stop (sometimes crossing several lanes of traffic!) to talk to me about the car. I always take the time to talk with anyone, and am honest about my cars pros and cons (82 GTSi).

he said it was a 96..348's were only made until 95..im woindering why he would lie about the year of his ferrari..maybe he was ashamed of its age..thats unsettleing..if i had a 91 348 and someone asked me the year of it id say it was a 91 with pride..id be proud of my ferrari

I saw a red 348 spider in Providence a few days ago with its engine idleing outside a local starbucks..my god what a buetiful site..the owner was inside the ferrari so i went up to the passenger side window and he rolled it down and i asked him to rev the engine (he gave it a very tiny rev) and i asked him what year it was he said it was a 96....oops must of been a special 348 hehe
anyways when you are driving your non-ferrari's around and u see a ferrari parked or the owner inside do you approach the owner to ask questions? and if so how are u treated? would u be treated differently if u pulled next to his ferrari in yours?
