Not being an expert on body repair, this is what I know. Rust is like a cancer and must be removed completely. If your lucky, the rust you have is only surface rust. You need to sand the rust off and down to clean metal. Treat the sanded area with a special acid and neutralize with a neutralizer. Prime area immediately and paint. There are also special primers that converts the rust chemically and seals the area so rust does not come back. I dont know how well those primers work. As for the type of acid to use, you should go to a automotive paint supplier and get it through them. If you have problems finding it, let me know and I will search thru the shelves in my garage and find what I used in the past. An important note here is that primer will not seal the metal and if you leave the primer on thinking your protected, your not. Moisture can pass thru primer and rust will again invade your car. Now, again, I am not an expert on this subject, this is information I read and procedures I have used with good results.

I dont think u can remove the engine "cage". AS for the door, "small" rust spots r like icebergs, what u cant see tends to be a lot more than what is visible. I had a friggin rust spot crack my $2,000 windshield :(

I'm having the same problem with the "cage" on my engine compartment. The paint is coming off in huge flakes. If we could get some pointers to repair it would help.

My 1989 328 GTS has a slight rust spot forming where the paint has chipped. Location of rust: passanger side, verticle door frame area where the glass on door meets the black rubber trim that lines the cockpit. Most of the rust is hidden by the rubber molding. I want to sand, prime and paint the rust spot and surrounding area (total about 4" x 1/2"), but need advise from anyone that has done a similar sand/primer/paint project of this small size. Most likely will buy paint/clearcoat/primer in spray can from location mentioned on this web page...is this the best source? Additionally, the engine compartment black metal "cage" that is rivited to the trunk lid is also flaking and I want to sand/prime/paint this area also...any suggestions? I don't think I can remove it, or can I? It would make the sanding/painting much easier.
