William, I live in California. Having a note on your car that says 'Please Do Not Touch' just invites some punk-idiot lowlife dirtbag to kick in one of your doors!

I didn't realize that vandalism/jealousy was a big issue in England. That would explain some of the behaviour I witnessed in London:

While being TOTALLY lost in a quiet but very ritzy neighborhood, I was busy snapping photos of all the vintage A-M, Jags, Bentleys, etc. that covered the parking lanes. Owners would peer out of their houses, often coming out to see what I was up to. After finding out that I was just a car-crazy Yank, they relaxed a bit.

Attitude is not unheard of here in the North West. A friend of mine had his 912 'Mule Kicked' in the drivers door by a pedestrian in a cross walk for no particular reason. Somebody was having a bad day.

From Dave's post - "I am often seriously ashamed to be a brit with the jealous attitude that seems to be infecting the place."

I have heard stories of people driving their Ferrari's in London and having pedestrians spit on them!! I agree with Dan, I think the US is a more automobile oriented culture than the UK and the general population has a greater respect for other people's cars. I often will come out of a store and find someone walking around or leaning over the car to get a better look, I have always found though that that person will have his hands behind his back. I have never seen anyone actually touching the car without my implied permission.

I like the "etiquette" link Willis posted. That is how I try to be as a Ferrari owner. If I am not in the mood to talk to anyone, I will take the M-B or the truck. Because when I take the Ferrari, it is a given that someone is going to come up to me and ask questions about it. I always try to be friendly and make time for them. I'll answer their questions and even "pop the hood" and let them look at the engine. I enjoy showing people the Ferrari. Heck, I like looking at it myself!

P.S. - I also like DrS's "eye candy" :-)

Dan,

Its not just London, its all over the country and has been for years. I live in what I thought was 'sleepy hollow' small town, but a few years ago I still had my 3 month old BMW keyed all down one side when I only left it parked around the corner from a pizzeria for no more than 10 minutes.

One of my colleagues came out of a DIY store after just 10 minutes and found youths 'WALKING' along the top of his wing (front fender) on his Porker 968

I am often seriously ashamed to be a brit with the jealous attitude that seems to be infecting the place.

Yes, its a pity about the UK, I had a Porsche vandalized in a church parking lot when I lived in London! Now that I'm in the US, I leave my 360 pretty much anywhere, even at the airport and make sure that I drive the pants off it at every opportunity. It seems that in the US people respect a Ferrari much more than the jealousy you often get in London with a nice car.

My advice is drive it any time you'll enjoy it, if you don't enjoy just sitting in traffic in it, just use it at the weekend and cruise. If like me you enjoy just trickling along as well as doing 150 then drive it everywhere!

Dave, I agree with you.

Some of you here and in Lamborghinichat are aware of my nightmare vandalism stories. DO NOT park and take four spots. You will for sure get your car vandalised. My cars have been vandalised and I didn't do anything like take four spots. As a matter of fact, I did nothing out of the ordinary. Doing something like parking in an illegal manner will just bring on a higher likelihood of vandalism or negative criticism.

do that in the UK and sure someone will run a nice key scratch line all around it for you, I'm serious...the place is full of people with envy eating them alive!

If you're in a 360, keep the driver's window down as often as possible so you can enjoy the growl of the air intake through the rear quarter panel just behind your ear... aaaaahhhhh....

I know I speak for everyone here that doesn't own a Ferrari that wants one when I say. If you see a kid or adult for that matter that is interested in your car and would like to see it and your not busy you should take the 10 min or so and show it to them. It really shows class and it makes it seem that much easier for someone like me to get a Ferrari knowing that the owner is a nice guy. Also I would like to thank all the f-car owners that do this, and it is an awsome thing to do. Just throwing an opinion out.

When driving a TR in deep snow never brake too quickly. At 100,000 miles change the clutch while doing your major even if it's not too worn.
If water temp rises past 220 lets say after driving in stop and go for over an hour with the AC on, shut off the AC, roll down the windows and put on the heater. It won't boil over...

I dont park at an angle, I park crossways at hotels :-) take up 4 spaces what the H!! BTW I'm serious :-)
Dont wash it in the sun or you cook the paint

make sure the seller has ALL the maintenance records & tools for the car, maintenance records are worth $7,000 on the TR cus thats what a major service can set you back easily. Tool kit is probably worth $2,000 maybe more. Get any dealer promises IN WRITING

Get a qualified mechanic you trust to look the car over. This is an ABSOLUTE MUST DO!!!!!

Good Luck, & when you get it, drive the H out of it, thats what Ferraris are for :-)

Let it warm up before getting on it; do so, not by sitting and letting it idle for any length of time, but by driving it a modest revs, shifting up to 3d when possible, or even higher, until water and oil temps move up. Second is often sticky on the cars when cold; you may shift from 1 to 3. Once warmed up the cars like revs, don't lug them; also, clutches are meant to be binary, don't slip it unless you have to, when i easing off from a standing start. The cars are shifted quicker if you are deliberate, rather than "fast," per se; the spring loading will help you, if you follow the gate. Some have that dogleg first, you just have to get used to it. Gradual application of power at launch; the cars are faster at higher speeds than the are on the 0-60 romp. Keep your windows clean (i carry window cleaner and rags with me); it makes a huge difference in visibility on a sunny day. Don't count on the parking brake; put the car in gear when you park. The more you drive it (assuming its a straight car with few real problems), the better it gets; the only way to find out if its not behaving is usually to drive it. If they sit, they suck.

#3 . Never leave a Ferrari. Except in your garage.

Do: drive it, a lot, and run the snot out of it at least once in a while
Do: treat it like a car
Do: remember that there is little ground clearance at the nose. Adjust driving habits to avoid nose bashing events.

Do not: cheap out on maintanence

A Ferrari is not made of sugar, it does not melt in water. I have raced in rain so thick you can hardly see. I use a car wash that does not remove auto waxes, and use a polish under the wax. Detail engine compartment with simple green and armoural.

PPI, PPI, PPI, PPI. Did I mention that you should get a PPI before buying.

First, it's a car, drive it. The other questions are at your discretion.

Some people worship their cars and some people drive the hell out of them, park them wherever theres a space, wash them when they are dirty. I'm from the latter school.

I'm about to purchase my first Ferrari, what are the do's and don'ts of ownership?Do you angle park
a Testarossa due to the width?Do you park it outside at a motel over night? How do you wash it,
one person told me he never uses water just a finishing spray?Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bud
